Startup Sault to strengthen local business market

Tuesday, March 18, 2014   by: SooToday.com Staff
NEWS RELEASE

STARTUP SAULT

*************************
Sault Ste. Marie is now an official Startup Canada Community with the launch of Startup Sault, joining 20 others Startup communities across Canada.

Startup Sault is a volunteer–led movement bringing together entrepreneurs, investors, mentors and small business service providers to create a supportive and knowledgeable environment where business startups can flourish in Sault Ste. Marie in a spirited entrepreneurial community.

Our community enterprise partners include the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre (SSMIC), Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation (SSMEDC), Community Development Corporation of Sault Ste. Marie (CDC), and Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce.

Startup Canada was created in 2012 with the goal of enhancing competitiveness and prosperity across Canada, by strengthening the entrepreneurship ecosystem and promoting a vibrant entrepreneurial culture.

Startup Sault is proud to be a part of this growing network and movement.

“As an entrepreneur myself, I have always valued the advice of other successful entrepreneurs, and felt we could do a better job of connecting our small business community to share, learn and prosper.  When the opportunity arose to become a startup community under Startup Canada, I jumped at it”, said Nevin Buconjic, Community Lead, Startup Sault.

“We have a great team of entrepreneurs and volunteers who will be working to connect our entrepreneurial community through networking events, learning opportunities and other methods”, said Buconjic.

Startup Sault is holding its first event, “Startup Drinks,” on March 27 from 7 – 9 p.m. at The Pub at the Water Tower Inn.

“Startup Drinks” is a casual, fun networking opportunity to meet and interact with other entrepreneurs.

The Startup Sault team will be on hand to answer questions and share information.

We invite all local entrepreneurs, small business owners and anyone interested in becoming an entrepreneur to attend.

....and another waste of time

I'm all for entrepreneurship, but it is no wonder people leave town to shop - we have WALMART - are there things in the works to get other department stores here? How can we attract people, if all we have is the malls. We could use another KMart type store.

Another pointless board that will drain taxpayer money. I thought the EDC does stuff like that

@theprotector

Maybe you can start a "Lazy Keyboard Warrior Society" and get some friends who also think entrepreneurship is a waste of time. If you aren't an entrepreneur then you need not attend!

Stop the hate train!

@scottstewy

Umm...did you see the part that this was VOLUNTEER-DRIVEN?? Don't believe everything you don't read.
Startup Sault 3/18/2014 2:28:46 PM Report

I'd like to clarify, based on some of the comments. Startup Sault is an entrepreneur-led initiative, joining 20 other communities across the country with the support of Startup Canada (www.startupcan.ca). As part of our mandate is to connect new entrepreneurs with small business resources available in the community, it is important for us to partner with existing agencies that offer these resources. We are not a board or group of these partner agencies...but together we can all grow our community! Look for future events, learning opportunities and more from Startup Sault, to help build capacity and improve the success of new and existing businesses in the community. We welcome those interested in learning more to join us!

It's like 90% of the commentors on this website are robots. It's the same thing on all the articles: don't read the articles and then have the mandatory "waste of taxpayers money" statement.

Startup Sault has nothing to do with taxpayer money. It is a group of business minded individuals creating a networking group. Start reading before you start typing.

Together with Strive (the Chamber of Commerce's young professionals networking group), it is a great thing to see in the city!
