A night of metal on metal (35 photos)

Wednesday, March 19, 2014   by: Donna Hopper

A crowd of metal-hungry fans gathered at the Canadian Night Club to see a band cited as a major influence on a number of acts of note, including Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax.

Canadian metal icons Anvil attacked their set with the intensity and drive reminiscent of the glory days which began for them in the 70s.

Although original members Steve 'Lips' Kudlow (vocals, guitar) and Robb Reiner (drums) never achieved the commercial success many feel they deserve, they're perfectly happy to continued doing what they do best.

And thanks to the critical and commercial success of a film that documents Anvil's career, Anvil! The Story of Anvil, they have a little more freedom to do so.

"We're still following a dream. It's what we do. It's what we've been doing all along," Lips told SooToday.com prior to Saturday's show. "Nothing has really changed other than we don't have regular day jobs any more, which is a great thing. We get to live the dream every day."

He said that influencing other musicians is a far more gratifying accomplishment than selling millions of records, and the band has the respect of their peers thanks to integrity and originality.

Anvil never 'sold out' for success, and although it resulted in some difficult years, they have no regrets.

"Part of what makes people authentic is you gotta know who you are, what you're doing and be true to yourself," Lips said. "I've lived that. That's my motto. I can't see it any other way and I won't. It's not about money. It never has been."

Saturday's Anvil setlist included 666, Thumb Hang, Badass Rock n Roll, This is Thirteen, Hope in Hell, Swing Thing, Mothra, Metal on Metal and more.

Opening the night were local acts Project 421, the Suicide Kings and Jack Spades, and Toronto's Caym which includes Robb Reiner's son Tyler on drums.

I'm sorry, but anyone who claims, "screaming into a mic" is music, needs a slap upside the head. I have a five year old daughter, when she doesn't get her way she'd be a great "singer" for this type of music.
osirisptah 3/19/2014 11:55:43 AM Report

^^^^^^ Is an old curmudgeon.
mac2 3/19/2014 12:00:27 PM Report

dont be sorry, u got the first comment to try and bring people down, wierd though, it was a full house when i went, and everyone had a good time. :)
mac2 3/19/2014 12:01:21 PM Report

i feel for your daughter as well, lol
mac2 3/19/2014 12:05:50 PM Report

now that i think of it, you should of been there at the door, slapping all the people upside the head as they were going in, mouthpiece.

come to some of the shows that play music like this, and proclaim your views, and get slaphappy!
JDW 3/19/2014 12:22:07 PM Report

@Marc....I love music.....just as long as its groovin...I'm with you...

Nice to see these guys finally get to do what they like. The world really gave them a rough ride when they were trying to make music. Politics, thieves, red tape, but they stuck it out and are making music. Good job lips! If you haven't seen the movie, it is quite comical, sad and dramatic.
mac2 3/19/2014 12:27:08 PM Report

:(, whatever will people do, someone sided with mark, now 2 of you can greet people and slap them around when they go in, lol
Alystr 3/19/2014 12:31:05 PM Report

These kind of gigs are cool to get in but the only problem I found with them was, they are all pop drinkers and poor like me lol. Us musicians in this city need to start making our own shows and making some money...
mac2 3/19/2014 12:35:24 PM Report

i dont quite understand what the last post is saying, there were all poor people there drinking pop?(which there weren't) the tickets were 25$ to get in, are you insinuating that if people were drinking alcohol instead of pop musicians would make more money?
TFinn 3/19/2014 1:05:19 PM Report

There's real music and then there's loud head banging music...I guess if you had enough weed, booze or other sh** ....it would'nt sound too bad ..lol
Koss 3/19/2014 1:47:33 PM Report

Great photos of a great show
Me Myself an I 3/19/2014 2:41:30 PM Report

@MarcHandthefunkybunch I will take that bet and you lose
Jamie333 3/19/2014 3:03:37 PM Report

I don't get it, what's the point of commenting that you personally don't like that type of music? Do you seriously think that anyone cares or that it matters that you're not into metal? Lots of people showed up and it was a great freaking time. Cool pics.
mac2 3/19/2014 3:04:16 PM Report

no actually, you are the one with big words, why dont u follow through with your big words? lol, show up next time, get on stage and say them, i will meet you there and come on stage with you. my word, let me know when and where.
mac2 3/19/2014 3:14:33 PM Report

and well, tfinn is tfinn, u can find his same type of comments under any of the articles on this site, all day long.........

miserable old man i am guessing, hopefully 1 of these articles with his arguing/trying to put people down on here will bring up his spirits.

:)
mac2 3/19/2014 3:16:17 PM Report

i mean, these people take the time to click on the link about something they dont like, and then take the time out to comment etc, lol

whats that say to you about them?
Tom_Bom 3/19/2014 3:53:29 PM Report

I CAN'T BELIEVE I MISSED ANVIL!!! I have to keep my ear to the ground about bands coming. They preformed on the Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien a few years ago.
Entitledtomyopinion 3/19/2014 4:07:40 PM Report

I would consider Anvil as much a part of the music community as Metallica, Ravi Shankar, George Strait, Public Enemy, Matthew West, or many many other musicians out there. Just because you don't "deem" a band music worthy, doesn't mean they didnt work their asses off to get there and develop a fan base. I'm over 40 and don't understand a lot of the music today, but at least I can still respect it as an artform.
Intwydimayla69 3/19/2014 4:08:43 PM Report

@ALYSTR.....interesting name. You mind if I ask where that comes from?
mac2 3/19/2014 5:31:33 PM Report

no rebuttals from mark the highly educated, maybe u can enlighten us on your education and where it got you, like here, commenting on sootoday articles about things you dont like, and threatening people that do like it with violence, that's edumacated!
mac2 3/19/2014 5:34:31 PM Report

he must be off listening to his marky mark and the funky stuff, lol
MarcHandthefunkybunch 3/19/2014 5:47:14 PM Report

Sorry, I was working. If Mac is who I think he is, maybe you should try seeing your son who you ignore. Great, great person you are.
mac2 3/19/2014 5:59:58 PM Report

:(, trying to deflect now.

i take it you dont want to discuss your original statements anymore, or anything that i have said for that matter either, it's ok, you go back to work, take some time to think things over, lol
mac2 3/19/2014 6:04:19 PM Report

opening with sorry on 2 of your posts, good stuff! but you are sorry for the wrong things, :(
mac2 3/19/2014 6:09:29 PM Report

it's hard to admit when you are wrong, noone likes to do it, but you would think with all that education that you speak of...........................
mac2 3/19/2014 6:13:18 PM Report

if you would ever like to meet in person at one of these concerts though and see who i really am, i would be more then happy to, we could debate the issue, compare educations, bank statements, health, family, properties, anything you like. and i wont slap you upside the head when you look like a fool, like you already have done here.
MarcHandthefunkybunch 3/19/2014 6:22:14 PM Report

Sticks and stones love. But just say when and where.
mac2 3/19/2014 6:29:02 PM Report

what is the sticks and stones reference to? and then call me love. i said at one of these concerts so you can get your point out there to everyone, i am open tonight though, is your house ok? if not, give me something to work with.
mac2 3/19/2014 9:44:51 PM Report

well that pretty much sums up marc h, sorry marc, u cast a line out and i bit, which is what you were looking for, did you like your catch? lol

hopefully you learned something today to add to your extensive education, i will leave it at that.

metal on metal!
MarcHandthefunkybunch 3/20/2014 7:27:09 AM Report

The fact you don't understand the "sticks and stones" reference tells me all I need to know. Have a blessed day!
mac2 3/20/2014 3:34:23 PM Report

you've made so much sense so far, u are on a roll! lol
mac2 3/20/2014 3:37:28 PM Report

just make sure for any future concert articles on here, you keep your word, and follow through, and meet up with everyone so you can slap them, i will be watching for your comments on future articles, hopefully we can meet someday, i already know who you are, lol, have fun!
mac2 3/20/2014 3:38:45 PM Report

this article is dead now, so its just me and you now cutey. see ya round!
mac2 3/20/2014 11:25:34 PM Report

i will be the bigger man, i took a few pokes at you, but it is what you were looking for, right? you basically come onto an article about something you dont like, which the article is meant for people that like it, and comment that anyone that claims it's music needs a slap in head. i am not sure if you even understand what i am saying, from the previous statements, i am guessing not, but none the less, i hope you find your way, and no hard feelings, just giving you a little taste of your own medicine.
