"Ian Hammond, 18, of Blind River, Ontario has been charged with first degree murder."

I'm not a real lawyer, but I play one behind my keyboard... wouldn't there be a greater chance of conviction if they charged this guy with a lesser charge like second or third degree murder?
B Boy 3/16/2014 4:53:30 PM Report

No. Just because the crown brief requests a certain charge doesn't mean the crown must proceed with it. Often the investigators will lay the heaviest charge and as the crown reviews the brief they either proceed, add additional charges or proceed with different charges.
asp 3/16/2014 5:01:48 PM Report

That what I was going to say!! As the investigation continues the police can change the charges based on evidence. But No Matter What an 18 year old just lost his freedom and life (going to jail for sure).I just hope he doesn't get away with it like that Moringstar girl. I send my prayers to the family who just lost a brother or son.
Asuna 3/16/2014 5:19:54 PM Report

pretty sad,...perhaps they should make their facebooks more private though...
mr.jack 3/16/2014 5:27:22 PM Report

i hope they throw this clown in jail and just forget about him
bugalugs 3/16/2014 8:04:16 PM Report

This is so sad anyway you look at it! Probably two stupid kids fighting over a girl...or something of no importance. Now two families are devastated! How lives change in an instant!
Auntiej 3/16/2014 8:20:35 PM Report

It is actually 1 family and let us leave them to their grieving!
just-me 3/16/2014 11:04:29 PM Report

So sad. :( My heart goes out to everyone involved.
megz705 3/17/2014 12:20:13 AM Report

As Auntiej said, it is just one family. There is probably much more to the story than has been released as of yet. Let us leave the family to grieve in peace and stop making absurd comments on the case.
Powerwise 3/17/2014 12:28:49 AM Report

Did you know that SLOTH is a terrible defect of CHARACTER?

Why not at least TRY to make a meaningful CONTRIBUTION to this story?

And by that I mean a legitimate attempt to bring about structured DIALOGUE and perhaps even an effort towards constructive criticism?
MarcHandthefunkybunch 3/17/2014 7:16:14 AM Report

Anyone know the story of what happened?
Blind River 3/17/2014 10:07:38 AM Report

As a community member of Blind River, I would like to state how disgusting you all are. None of you know the circumstances of what happened but you are all so quick to judge. A family and a community are grieving so how about you all keep your comments to yourselves.
scoobie doo 3/17/2014 10:21:03 AM Report

Going by what some "in the know" have said, there's more to the story than is stated in the article and I feel for the family. That being said, all the article stated was that an 18 yr old was charged with first degree murder, so naturally people are going to weigh in with their opinions on what we read. Now that there's been some insight given, I think people in general will sit back and wait for more info to be released. Sad, sad situation.
Sunshine_banks 3/17/2014 10:37:04 AM Report

My heart goes out to the family and friends of this tragedy and to all of Blind River as it is a small community and I am sure this has affected all who live there....You re in my thoughts and prayers.
MarcHandthefunkybunch 3/17/2014 11:11:42 AM Report

1st degree murder says all you need to know. If it were an "accident" or if there was "more to the story," odds are you would see 2nd degree or even manslaughter. Get rid of the guy who did it.
caress 3/17/2014 11:44:56 AM Report

It disgusting that the newspaper would mention his name when the poor kid have not been found GUILTY yet.
SandyM 3/17/2014 11:53:52 AM Report

caress.. they have reported that he has been charged.

They will then follow the story and if he is declared innocent, they will announce that as well.

It is a press release from the OPP.. and is posted by the news media as such.

caress 3/17/2014 12:22:35 PM Report

@ Sandy ...I understand that he been charge, but that there don't make him GUILTY of the crime, even if he was declared innocent of it,his name went through the ringer and people will judge.
MarcHandthefunkybunch 3/17/2014 12:47:12 PM Report

Welcome to Sootoday. They post and ruin peoples lives all the time. Is this your first time on this site? They post everyone's name, but once they are found "not guilty" they do not post anything. It's a joke.
caress 3/17/2014 1:02:57 PM Report

@ MarcHandthefunkybunch

Yes it my first time on here, it is a shame that they would post any one name before the court case is over.
MarcHandthefunkybunch 3/17/2014 1:18:15 PM Report

There was a story of a guy who was charged with downloading child porn a few years back. He lost his job at the plant, family and friends disowned him and everything. Sootoday posted his name all over this site. When it went to trial, it came out that nothing was found at his house or on his computers. He had an "unblocked" router and someone was pulling into his driveway in the middle of the night and was downloading stuff from his IP address. The guy was completely innocent and found not guilty on all counts. Sootoday conviently stopped coverage and didn't post that anywhere.
Yet I know for a FACT they haven't put up stories of people who are family and friends of sootoday staff. Anyway, enough said, you can see the problem I'm sure.
dandrew61 3/17/2014 1:40:00 PM Report

In Canadian law it is much easier to lower a charge from murder one down to murder two or manslaughter then it is to raise a charge up to murder one. They usually start with first degree murder then let the investigation and courts decide the final outcome.
sidekick101 3/17/2014 1:55:25 PM Report

Sootoday.com is nothing but a localized version of TMZ, with people who have nothing better to do with their lives than sit behind a computer and make judgments on stories that deeply affect the lives of other people. @marchandthefunkybunch - what happened?? really???? If you really want all the details, I suggest that since you seem to have plenty of time to sit here and comment, that when the trial occurs, you spend your time at the courthouse where you can find out. @MrJack-you know nothing about the person who you are quick to judge. For you, I suggest you take a look at the people around you who likely would not appreciate your statement should (god forbid)they ever had to go through such a horrible family tragedy. Lives change in the blink or an eye, I wouldn't wish this on anyone, and don't think it could never happen to you or someone close to you. @Asuma: Curiosity, I understand. But searching facebook for family postings is disgusting. That's just being nosy and inconsiderate - the fact you posted that you actually did this speaks to your character.
For anyone else out there making assumptions about the who, the how, and the why....give it up already. Offer sympathy and kindness to all involved in this tragedy, they have enough to deal with. If you have nothing good to offer, then keep it to yourself. Thanks to those who have posted their kind thoughts - your compassion is much appreciated.
Bad Dawg 3/17/2014 2:34:33 PM Report

I agree they should be posting the court decisions not the pre-trial charges. It is public information.

Sorry to the Families involved

MissKika 3/17/2014 6:18:06 PM Report

sootoday.com posts VERBATIM what the City Police/RCMP/OPP report. Your complaining about names being released should go to them. (but then, of course, you will complain when names aren't reported as well)
scoobie doo 3/17/2014 9:07:42 PM Report

I'm not a fan of releasing names of people who have only been charged of a crime either, I'd much rather the law be that the name is released AFTER a conviction and not before. I'm not naïve enough to think that all people who get charged are actually guilty nor am I naïve enough to think that it's Sootoday's fault that names are released either,as it's common practice for all media outlets to announce the names of the accused. What makes this site TMZ or Gongshow is the comment section!!
