Memorial vigil for Loretta SaundersFriday, March 07, 2014 by: SooToday.com Staff
A memorial vigil was held for Loretta Saunders at Algoma University on Wednesday March 5, 2014, which also is the home of the old Shingwauk Residential School.
Approximately 30 people were present for this very important vigil.
Loretta Saunders is the St Mary's University student who was completing her thesis on Missing and Murdered Aboriginal Women.
Loretta went missing on February 13, 2014 and her body was found on February 26, 2014.
As a First Nations Female student attending an University, I realized the need and necessity of honouring the work and memory of Loretta Saunders.
I worked quickly with my fellow peers to create a space and time to honour the memory of Loretta Saunders and of all missing and murdered Aboriginal women.
The gathering provided an opportunity to bring awareness to the reports of over 800 aboriginal women missing since 1990 and also for moment of prayer, sharing and hand drumming and song.
This memorial took place on the same day that a vigil was being held in Ottawa on Parilament Hill.
There will be further planning to have another international memorial on March 27, 2014.
