I think the damage was farther than reported. I live near lower Boundary road and we were out of all services including TV, phone and internet! Internet never came back on until very late last night. Everything is on now. Wait until the spring thaw and more broken water pipes...we will have more intermittent services as the PUC tries to deal with everything. At this point the PUC will NOT be totally to blame!

@sandpiper....we live on Lake St. Only lost internet service for eight hours, two short power outages. Wonder if Shaw will give us a discount for those lost eight hours' service? I don't think so, either.

Can someone please address the issue of the LACK OF EMERGENCY LIGHTING at the John Rhodes Centre. Children varying in age from 3 - 10 were in attendance for skating. Children also were in swimming, gymnastics, hockey, Kumon. THERE WERE NO EMERGENCY LIGHTS in the arena. How is this safe? How is this code? This could have been a potentially dangerous situation both on and off the ice. The city and fire department should be on this immediately. PUC rectified the outage. Other agencies should be doing their jobs.

lennom... a lightning arrester can fail when there is no lightning. They are also called "switching surge arresters," and can fail during a switching operation.
lennom 3/5/2014 11:52:26 AM Report

SamC. I understand what you are saying.. but.. lightning arrestor.. or switching arrestor.. not the same thing. The info from puc is vague at best and is ment to be.

In regard to Shaw Cable disruptions. You can't blame them for an incident that they didn't create, so why should they be responsible for the breakdown. Apparently the breakdown was caused by a vehicle obliterating a communications pole. If people want restitution, they should go after the guilty driver that doesn't know how to handle a vehicle, like so many other drivers in our city.

I was at the John Rhodes last night when the power went off.My grand children were on the ice when the lights went off .the whole arena was completely black except for the Exit signs .the emergency light were on in the restaurant only .some of the parents had cell phones that lit up for them.we had a heck of a time trying to find the grandchildren, getting them to the dressing room was a chore ,we entered the dressing room to find they had emergency lights .there were also one in the lobby.someone opened the doors to the outside to let in light and to let in the cold, something has to be done to get emergency lites especially near the stairs in the arena. After about 10 minutes the emergency light went out???People were bouncing off each other.NOT NICE.(SAFETY)
