Shaw outage reported

Tuesday, March 04, 2014   by: SooToday.com Staff

SooToday.com has received a number of reports from faithful readers informing us that some of their Shaw services are down this afternoon.

While most indicate that their home phone service is not operational, area internet seems to also be impacted by the outage.

Customers in the Sault Ste. Marie area who call the Shaw Customer Service line are greeted with a message indicating that the company is aware of the outage.

It states that technicians are currently working to resolve the issue.

There's no indication of how long it will be until service is restored or what caused the outage.

Although there are no service alerts listed for Ontario on the Shaw Community website forum, moderators of the Shaw Help Twitter account (@Shawhelp) are busy responding to customer concerns.

SooToday.com will post updated information if and when it becomes available.

For those who have internet and cable restored, but their digital phone service is still out, you will likely need to do a pin-hole reset on your DPT. https://community.shaw.ca/docs/DOC-1014

@Digimisfit

Do you know anything about PVR's?
Rachel01 3/4/2014 4:54:05 PM Report

Mine all went out but phone took a little longer to come back on.I did not have to do anything for my phone to come back on...it is all restored now.
Lone24 3/4/2014 4:54:15 PM Report

Well sorry to say it didn't work DigitalMisfit.

They aren't up and running yet---i think he was saying to Reset once lines are fixed
kamen 3/4/2014 5:16:25 PM Report

Mine was internet, cable and phone...phone finally came back on about an hour ago...can't wait to find out what happened.
gohabsgo 3/4/2014 5:23:13 PM Report

Resetting the DPT did not work for me. Online light still flashing after 30 minutes.
Lone24 3/4/2014 5:24:06 PM Report

Might have to look into that Saucy. Good thing I'm not in bad need of an ambulance, can't call out. At least with Bell when this happens you can still call out. What Shaw charges for a residential line is outrageous.
bunyak 3/4/2014 5:46:13 PM Report

they never admit to the problem....
bounder 3/4/2014 5:47:50 PM Report

Got the info from the Blue room on this site.

Now internet down with it.
Tag33&1/3rd 3/4/2014 9:32:00 PM Report

My shaw down still! I have a PVR that I have called them 4 times about---it is so slow "Lagged" at times (most of the time it seems) if I change a channel it can take from right away to 2 full minutes! Even scrolling thru on screen tv guide takes forever!!! Anyone know why? I have reset it everytime I Call them (as that's all they say to do)--within an hour it's back to doing it.
??? Anyone know this problem? There is no use calling them---I am renting to own this thing from them--shouldnt they replace it?
cliff76 3/4/2014 9:45:00 PM Report

scottstewy123 3/4/2014 11:18:18 PM Report

Sammie today was an anomaly. In the past I have seen internet out maybe 2 times since being with shaw. STUFF happens.
scottstewy123 3/4/2014 11:18:52 PM Report

I wish our PUC was as reliable as Shaw.
Asuna 3/4/2014 11:25:52 PM Report

all joking aside my internet was out from 2-10pm today
JustMe1234567 3/4/2014 11:38:04 PM Report

YAY! It's baaaaack.

Wow. The internet goes out for a few hours...and I didn't know what to do, I felt so..disconnected. ha!

It's scary how much a part of our daily lives the internet has become.
!KENNEDY! 3/4/2014 11:53:53 PM Report

Shaw should go down more often internet seems faster then ever now lol
blackspruce 3/5/2014 7:08:41 AM Report

with the outage open my families eyes we all sat and ate supper together and spent the evening talking and planning our holiday or our daughters education. It was nice, seems we let the computer be such a big part of our life that we miss the actual talking to each other. And to those that say go to Bell, least when I call in I get someone that tells me they know there is an issue and are working on it the last time I called Bell the lady told me I would see someone in three days and if the problem is in my house there would be a service charge added to my bill. Never been charged by Shaw for fixing a problem even if was my from my own doing
thumbs4208 3/5/2014 8:15:56 AM Report

My boys and I played acoustic guitar for the evening. Was nice.
Hounds Fan 3/5/2014 8:41:36 AM Report

chalk up another win for Vianet..no outage for me :)
GrammaDingbat54 3/5/2014 9:21:33 AM Report

Our internet was down for eight hours. Think we'll get a discount next month for lost service? Nah. Had to laugh...Shaw was aware of the loss of service and were working on it. We were told to go to shaw.ca to see the progress. How do we do that without internet, hmmmmm?
HeiseFactor 3/5/2014 9:41:53 AM Report

Phone and internet still down in P-Patch
9:00am today
amandastewart88 3/5/2014 9:52:56 AM Report

It's still out in the p patch because the city came and did snow removal and ran over a bunch of the peds. Only so much shaw can do when other people destroy their stuff :) js
blackspruce 3/5/2014 10:04:22 AM Report

funny the city could not see the marks laid out by the Shaw guys yesterday. two shaw guys were marking all the pedestal locations with orange paint and flags yesterday when I asked them why they said so the town guys could see them and not accidentally hit them. Maybe the city should take some responsibility and apologize for their carelessness
ThinkAgain 3/5/2014 10:37:01 AM Report

Today's poll should ask: "So what did you do without internet",lol

Hmmmmmm I wonder how many new pregnancies, lol - the world never did end and TV programs continued as normal

PS: You will not get any refund from Shaw unless you call and ask for it.
kamen 3/5/2014 11:23:18 AM Report

Okay so I had internet, cable and phone go out around 2:30pm....internet and cable came back on around 3pm...phone came on at 4pm, Then I am sitting here on Facebook and my internet went BACK out at 6pm and didn't come back on until sometime after 3am.....thanks alot....I think Shaw should give everyone a smaller bill this month, that was a load of bull....
thesharr 3/5/2014 11:24:40 AM Report

beej(digging in the wrong places)ya our POCKETS
kamen 3/5/2014 11:24:58 AM Report

Also...it wasn't only Shaw, I had people who's cell phones stopped working, ATM's went down all over the place...yesterday was messed up.....
ssmrental 3/5/2014 12:11:13 PM Report

I second FibreOp as being a completely new bell service

I bought last week and locked my price in for 24 months then got a email on monday saying the deal been extended to this week

Yes I have been burned by bell before but like above poster they are Bell Aliant which is Atlantic company with separate billing and customer service then Bell Canada. They also believe and give away their number if you are not satisfied with CS they go to bat for you and get it done

The young man lives locally on Woodward and can be reached by 705-941-1923

MadAboutYou 3/5/2014 12:11:41 PM Report

I also had the pleasure of having FibreOp. It is not "Bell". They are an awesome company and I have nothing but great things to say about them! Anytime I have had to call I call either the man that signed me up or a Canadian tech-support person.

The gentleman who signed me up was Adrian. Very nice man and gave me the best deal, even better than what the phone people at FibreOp could offer (I had to try). 24months at $99.95/month for all my services (NO CONTRACT!!!) and they were not interrupted yesterday. He's a local, here's his number 705-542-6517.

It is nice to read about those families utilizing the technology down time to enjoy their families!
3rd times a charm 3/5/2014 12:33:47 PM Report

nice that they posted the outage...which you need internet to read...
Tag33&1/3rd 3/5/2014 12:53:27 PM Report

@FiberOp people? Is this for tv too? Do you get same channels as shaw? Can you pick your own channels instead of having to get little packages? Do they have PVR's that don't LAG? Is it wireless Internet?
Tag33&1/3rd 3/5/2014 1:17:06 PM Report

Lol you guys must all live downtown eh?
Everyone talking about FiberOP --its only available in the downtown area of the City!??? Geeez too bad!
Sammy1099 3/5/2014 1:39:59 PM Report

FibreoOP is part of BELL. I get flyers all the time from them. Here is the website.
http://www.fibreop.ca/info/

In case you missed it,it's all Bell.

Those who are thinking of BELL may be intrested in BELLs privacy policy you can read that here
http://www.thestar.com/business/tech_news/2014/01/27/consumer_groups_challenge_bells_collection_of_customer_data.htmlhere.

I'm not a Shaw shill either, frankly I don't trust *any of them and think they all overcharge. Shaw for the time being is the lesser of two evils. If they keep jacking up their rates though that may change.I guess it's nice to be a monopoly.

*Where "any" is Bell or Shaw or a reseller of there services. Hence a monopoly.

Just in case you've been living in a cave the last 5 months or so.
MMF 3/5/2014 4:48:48 PM Report

Fiberop is available downtown and some parts of the east end...google Bell Aliant Fibe op and put your address in and check to see if it's available...they have all three products...TV..Phone and Internet...and the modem has wireless...and Bell Aliant and Bell Canada are two differnet companys that run under BCE...If you try it you won't be disapointed...My neighbor got a free 42' tv as long as he kept the service for two years...not a bad deal...
Sammy1099 3/5/2014 5:39:36 PM Report

MMF
You realise that BCE stands for

" Bell Canada Enterprises" ?

And that until recently Bell was a majority holder of Aliant which merged into Bell AKA Bell Aliant. These are all off shoots of Bell. Why do you think they have BELL in the name? Bell would be suing anyone who used there name that they didn't own or have significant shares in.
Punkz 4/12/2014 11:14:45 PM Report
