NEWS RELEASE

CANADIAN RED CROSS

*************************
March is Red Cross Month and the organization is encouraging residents to get to know their local Red Cross.

From emergencies to community support services, the Red Cross wants to ensure those in need of assistance or those interested in volunteering know what is available through the Red Cross right in this community.

“The Canadian Red Cross is here when you need us most, and this March we are making every effort to help people get to know us and get involved,” said Diane Lajambe, District Branch Manager.

“People often think of the Red Cross as assisting internationally, particularly during times of disaster. What they may not know is that the Red Cross is very active, each and every day, right here in our community,” said Lajambe.

For more than 100 years, the Canadian Red Cross has provided help and hope to those facing conflict, disaster, injury or illness, both in Canada and around the world.

Every four minutes, the Canadian Red Cross responds to a disaster in Canada providing support and comfort to those affected.

The Red Cross also offers a variety of services that help elderly and vulnerable members of the community remain living in their own homes, including Meals on Wheels, Transportation and a Health Equipment Loan Program.

First aid, water safety, violence and abuse prevention programs and workshops on humanitarian issues are also offered by the Red Cross.

In Sault Ste. Marie, Red Cross offers First Aid, Disaster Management, Seniors Transportation, Friendly Visiting and Telephone Assurance, Priority Assistance to Transition Home (PATH), Assisted Living for High Risk Seniors, Home Maintenance, Community Kitchens and Community Gardens to meet the needs of the community.

Many of these programs are also offered in the District of Algoma.

For more information, please contact the Sault Ste. Marie office.

To recognize March is Red Cross month, a Pasta Dinner and Open House will take place on March 13, 2014 at 5 p.m. at the Northern Grand Gardens.

Musical entertainment will be featured at this event as well as information about becoming a volunteer. “We hope that community members will join us to celebrate the work of the Red Cross,” said Lajambe.

Tickets are available by contacting the local branch.

Residents can help support the Red Cross by making a financial donation or by becoming a volunteer.

They can also offer support by purchasing a Northern Raffle ticket before March 16 for $10 or purchasing a bag of colourful Jelly Beans for $1 at local businesses supporting the Canadian Red Cross.

To learn more, please visit www.redcross.ca or call 705-759-4547.

The Canadian Red Cross is a member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, which includes the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International Committee of the Red Cross and 188 National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

Our mission is to improve the lives of vulnerable people by mobilizing the power of humanity in Canada and around the world.

From personal experience I can say how wonderful the seniors transportation program is. Giving these seniors a ride to be able to keep appointments and attend programs is truly giving people a new lease on life!! Thank you to all the volunteer drivers that are giving of their time!! You are making an invaluable contribution to the lives of many.
