'The country will not soon forget...'

NEWS RELEASE

OFFICE OF THE
PRIME MINISTER
OF CANADA

**************************
Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement congratulating the Canadian Winter Olympic Team on their stellar performance at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia:

Our Winter Olympic team went to Sochi to proudly represent their country and perform to the best of their ability.

They certainly succeeded in spectacular fashion, earning 10 gold medals, 10 silver medals and five bronze medals.

The whole country watched breathlessly as they went faster, higher, stronger over ice and snow, often defying gravity and defining precision with true Canadian spirit and pride.

They provided us with terrific moments in sport that inspired fervent national pride and demonstrated again and again that Canadians can compete with the very best on the world stage and succeed brilliantly.

The country will not soon forget sisters Justine and Chloé Dufour-Lapointe standing on the podium together with gold and silver in the women’s freestyle skiing moguls’ competition, our women’s curling team going undefeated the entire Sochi Winter Games, Alex Bilodeau, Charles Hamelin, Kaillie Humphries and Heather Moyse repeating gold medal performances in their respective sports four years after their successes at the Vancouver 2010 Games, Canadian athletes earning medals in newly introduced winter Olympic sports like Dara Howell and Kim Lamarre in women’s skiing slopestyle, Jan Hudec’s bronze medal in alpine skiing men’s Super-G, Canada's first podium finish in men's Olympic alpine skiing in 20 years, and the ice poetry of silver medal skaters Patrick Chan, Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir to name a few.

Of course, we will all remember the spectacular win by our Women’s Hockey Team coming back from a two goal deficit to win the gold medal.

The victory in men's hockey was also richly deserved.

These special moments and many others will no doubt inspire young people across the country to follow their sporting dreams.

In addition to the Team’s remarkable performance, our athletes also showed great sportsmanship and camaraderie, capturing the true spirit and meaning of the Games.

Who will forget Gilmore Junio stepping aside so that Denny Morrison could compete in men’s 1000m speed skating where he earned a silver medal, and the emotional honouring of the late Sarah Burke, a gifted athlete and trailblazer in freestyle skiing who championed the halfpipe being introduced as an Olympic sport this year in Sochi, Russia.

I would like to pay special tribute to the Olympic Team coaches and support staff as well as supportive family members who were all an essential part of this year’s success.

I would also like to thank the countless sports clubs, associations, teams and volunteers here at home who have created a network in Canada that yields so many world-class athletes.

Our Government will continue to support your important work.

Finally, I would also like to thank Russia, especially the people of Sochi, for hosting these Games.

I look forward to the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games, which will undoubtedly add to our impressive Sochi medal tally.

How about a mention of Team Jacobs from our small Northern City.
bounder 2/23/2014 2:42:41 PM Report

How's about sharing the beer as I share my income.

How's about sharing the beer as I share my income.
justsomeguy 2/23/2014 2:47:12 PM Report

@d'sbored - Why should he mention Team Jacobs just because they're from SSM?

Do you actually think we're the only smaller city that has some good athletes? There are many (and smaller) communities located much further north that also had athletes that are bringing home a gold medal.

flyhawk25 2/23/2014 3:09:58 PM Report

Note to Bryan Hayes...you might want to tell your boss that we have a pretty good curling team in SSM.
He does know where we are doesn't he?And he must know who you are.
Time for damage control Bryan.
Javaman 2/23/2014 3:13:37 PM Report

yes Stephen...we will not soon forget our athletes...but..we will soon be forgetting about you.
James O'Brien 2/23/2014 3:14:42 PM Report

Actually, there is no mention of curling at all. Men's or Women's.
Asuna 2/23/2014 3:20:21 PM Report

ahh harpers still around?
wake me up when its voting time ;)
Javaman 2/23/2014 3:22:47 PM Report

It really shows how bad Harper is when folks are ready to vote in droves for Trudeau who has yet to tell us how he will change this country.
sammmys 2/23/2014 3:47:48 PM Report

As "justsomeguy" noted, there ARE many great athletes from small northern communities however OUR hometown men won gold in the same event as the women, who were, btw, undefeated (an Olympic first), showing the world what "double-double" really means. Harper missed the podium by forgetting to mention the outstanding achievements in an entire sport.
missmya 2/23/2014 3:52:55 PM Report

We don't really think Stephen actually wrote that do we?
Bill_the_Cat 2/23/2014 3:58:08 PM Report

Great athletes from here, yes.

But curling is neither athletic nor a sport. Well, no more or less than lawn bowling or darts.

Time to cull this event IOC.
HowAbooutSomeLogic 2/23/2014 4:18:40 PM Report

Bill, imho, you are a phoque ing idiot - one who has never curled, I will add.
CTgasman 2/23/2014 4:19:47 PM Report

wow, so much whining here. This is really a non issue. He did not mention Marielle Thompson either. I am sure he has nothing against her home town.
kaima 2/23/2014 4:24:51 PM Report

How about the Sault people forgetting Harper? His response was very lousy to say the least. I guess we don't matter to the Tories.
The Enigma 2/23/2014 4:36:53 PM Report

What a bunch of small town, small-minded people on here.

Read (and actually think about) what people like Just Some Guy and CTgasman have to say and grow up.
lynsy 2/23/2014 4:37:04 PM Report

well Bill... aka the cat...lets talk curling, and not from your couch w/ a case of beer already 1/2 gone. I seem to recall how the commentators on numerous occasions mentioned how the Jacobs Team have changed the way players condition or train to play at that level. Try sweeping rocks end to end and then get in the hack to throw your two rocks, for ten ends of play. Its also the first time Men and Womens Curling have won gold at the Olympics...the women have struggled @ gold until this year. The Jacobs rink marked a 3peat for mens gold at the Olympics in curling, and yep....they are from S.S.Marie. So although their quest for the gold wasn't a clean run as the Women's, as I believe they had stronger opposition, they indeed should have been mentioned w/ the Jones rink for their remarkable accomplishments the past year in representing Canada and giving us DOUBLE GOLD in Curling as with mens Hockey. Very proud of these young men from S.S.Marie. Just my thoughts
GotRotties 2/23/2014 4:40:01 PM Report

Yes Brian he DID mention curling "our women’s curling team going undefeated the entire Sochi Winter Games"...he also added.."to name a few" I don't think he could really get down to naming every single person on the Olympic teams which would also include...the coaches, assistant coaches, trainers, equipment managers,etc....
KFM 2/23/2014 4:51:12 PM Report

Funny, he sends this out after his government cut funding over the past few years for these athletes. Two face a&&!
Roy Boy 2/23/2014 4:53:26 PM Report

Dear Future Former PM,
Once again the people in the north have been excluded in your thoughts. Just as we were beaming with pride for all of our Olympians for their performances in Sochi, you come out with a public statement and selected only the people that may have enough voting pull to help you out, to congratulate. We here in the forgotten north were especially proud of our beloved Team Jacobs for their outstanding play and their ability to recover from a 1-2 deficit to run the rest of the games and bring home the gold. What will it take to have you and your ministers to recognize the people in the north. You and the ministries you are in control of have slowly made us second class citizens and outcasts. From our water ways, roads, to our passenger rail lines your party has exiled us from the rest of the country. Well we will persevere and in a short 18 months we will repay you for everything you’ve done to us and for us. We promise not to leave you out, as you did us, when we get to voice our opinion in our votes.
Prrrrrrr 2/23/2014 4:54:32 PM Report

I'm not impressed that he didn't mention Team Jacobs...this is a first for both male and female curling teams from the same country to both take home the gold, it's history...at the very least, that could have been mentioned!!!
guard1 2/23/2014 4:56:11 PM Report

Definitely Harper should of mentioned all the medalists. That is the honourable thing to do. They are just words , they do not cost anything. Think of them as a drink water to someone that is thirsty. Every canadian athelete wants recognition from their prime minister. Shame on you Harper to make no mention of the mens and ladies curling champs.
sunnie 2/23/2014 5:27:58 PM Report

Surprised, NOT... with all the complainers on here..
Honorable mention is really not necessary since Team Jacobs already knows they played an amazing game.
Give it a rest Peeps and just bask in the glory that is rightfully ours as proud Canadians.
Sam C 2/23/2014 5:28:14 PM Report

He obviously could not mention all 25 medal winners... nor even all 10 gold winners. It's a statement of thanks to all the athletes... I'm sure the ones who aren't specifically named don't feel insulted.
Sam C 2/23/2014 5:34:00 PM Report

lynsy... just to clarify... this is the first time the men's and women's curling teams have won gold *at the same games*.

This is the third straight Olympic gold for the Canadian men's team (Gushue, 2006; Martin, 2010; Jacobs, 2014). The Women last won gold with Sandra Schmirler in 1998. (btw... the women have medalled in every games starting in 1998.)
AnnieP 2/23/2014 5:35:36 PM Report

As usual, Harper forgets about the people from Sault Ste Marie and Northern Ontario. Don't worry Mr Harper...we will forget about you in the next election! Well done boys from The Soo! WE are so proud of you!
AnnieP 2/23/2014 5:40:51 PM Report

If you can't mention all the winners, then why mention the few. They are ALL medal winners...don't pick and choose just a few of the popular names. Very poor PR. Boo!
statusquo 2/23/2014 5:42:11 PM Report

"He obviously could not mention all 25 medal winners"

Sam, that is bullshit!

He mentioned the women's curling team and listing all 25 medal winners would not have been a herculean task.
Doubling up on both men's and woman's curling with a gold medal certainly warrants a mention!
Makes me wonder if he even knows who Brian Hayes is.

Bill_the_Cat 2/23/2014 5:44:56 PM Report

Perhaps he only mentioned those winners who didn't have a Conservative MP, leaving the first chance at kudos to the local politico?

I don't know really. Perhaps Mr Hayes has some enemies in the PMO?
statusquo 2/23/2014 5:48:08 PM Report

Bill,

Mr Hayes has no enemies...how could he?
He hasn't done squat!
Bill_the_Cat 2/23/2014 5:51:18 PM Report

I thought it might be he chose athletes only to mention, but the women's curling team was mentioned...

Perhaps it's that 'english only' thing come back to haunt you?
statusquo 2/23/2014 5:51:25 PM Report

I well remember the laments directed of "Tony -do nothing Martin"...and he was in the OPPOSITION! At least you heard about him every now and again. All I get from Hayes is little cards that go straight from the mailbox into the recycling bin.
Javaman 2/23/2014 5:53:59 PM Report

I do not think team JACOBS needs any "validation" from an outgoing PM. I do think HAYES could have said "something" even though he is an outgoing SSM rep as well.
statusquo 2/23/2014 5:54:07 PM Report

Bill,

"Perhaps it's that 'english only' thing come back to haunt you?"

In this instance I doubt it, but since you brought it up , it has damaged the Sault's reputation more then some are willing to admit. In the same vein, how many of those medals went to athletes from Quebec?
Twistinwrenches 2/23/2014 5:57:09 PM Report

Steven Harper has done a very good job guiding our country through a world economic crisis. If you will not vote for economic prosperity over a statement on amature sports you are very simple minded.
statusquo 2/23/2014 5:57:48 PM Report

I agree Javaman,

for me, the quintessential moment of these Olympics was the girl's hockey team battling back from a 2 nothing deficit.
That event we should remember for a long time. It's really not all about hockey, but an inspiration for all of us that even when things look desperate, never give up and never surrender!
statusquo 2/23/2014 6:01:50 PM Report

Twisting,

Are you sure about that?
Harper sailed the course that was set long before he took over, A course that was pre determined due to a conservative and cautious implementation of banking regulations and fiscal policies entrenched by both liberal and conservative governments before him.
Back to the Olympics...he also slashed funding for our athletes...the least he could do is mention the ones that succeeded despite him.
Bill_the_Cat 2/23/2014 6:07:32 PM Report

sq: I don't really know. It really only takes one staffer in the PMO with a hard0n against the do-nothing Hayes.

Well done the lads at any rate. I do hope the homecoming parade is being organised.
flyhawk25 2/23/2014 6:08:35 PM Report

I'm sure Bryan is already lobbying the PMO to be here for the welcome home party for our guys.
Very cool - 'Battling Haircuts on Cut-outs'.
Javaman 2/23/2014 6:11:02 PM Report

Does anyone really think Hayes has the nerve to run again? Say it isn't so !!!!
statusquo 2/23/2014 6:15:06 PM Report

Bill,

Neither do I. All I know is that the Sault is regarded as this hinterland, hick town , and passing asinine resolutions like the French only debacle, and grinding off nipples and pubic hair on bronze statues don't help either ! (you do remember the Rhodes Arena "controversy" that made the national news?)

All I am saying is that the statement did mention the woman's curling success and all it would have taken was " in addition to....." .
Maybe, just maybe, the omission was deliberate.
statusquo 2/23/2014 6:16:31 PM Report

Java,

Hayes doesn't run...he sits and waits. Have you been in the "blue room" lately?
James O'Brien 2/23/2014 6:33:04 PM Report

Sorry @GotRotties, I stand corrected. My bad.
Lone24 2/23/2014 6:36:28 PM Report

Do you really think Harpo is going to give a dam if people vote him out in the next election. He will have his full pension and be well off for the job he didn't do. While other people have to fight to keep their pensions.
Onty 2/23/2014 7:43:52 PM Report

Harper.....seriously? Talk about everyone else and not mention our Soo boys? Shame on him, shame. Team Jacobs was the most exciting for me. Congrats on the great job boys. Harper may have forgot, but the Soo will never forget.
I'm In 2/23/2014 10:01:43 PM Report

KFM your right about the PC Harper Government, for the likes of me I could never understand why hard poor/middle class working Canadian's would vote a rich man's party into power, they take from the poor and give to their rich friend, like cutting funding to this Winter Olympic Team to train. Yes, SSM get rid of Hayes the backbencher on Parliament Hill in 2015, his PC boss didn't even mention Team Jacob's (Sam C read the news article)
Tag33&1/3rd 2/23/2014 11:02:58 PM Report

Awe! Curlers both Men and Women will never be forgotten by me or my family. (they made us interested in the sport!)

Hayes shows up for photo opportunities...that is all he thinks we need to vote for him again. Think again.
