The Sault surrendered (20 photos)

Friday, February 21, 2014   by: Donna Hopper

After almost 40 years of virtually continuous touring and 16 studio albums, Rick Nielsen (guitar), Tom Patersson (bass) and Robin Zander (vocals, guitar) have a lot to smile about.

The three original members of Cheap Trick, along with Nielsen's son Daxx replacing Bun E. Carlos on drums, made a stop in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan last evening at Kewadin Casino.

This made area fans smile. A lot.

At 61 years old, Zander's vocal might remained unwavering (even through the regrettably muddy sound production) as the foursome powered through 90 minutes of classic hard rock.

The set list opened with the traditional Hello There and included California Man, Way of the World, Clock Strikes Ten, Tonight It's You, I Can't Take It, I Want You To Want Me, The Flame, Dream Police, and Surrender to name a few.

Covers of Elvis Presley's Don't Be Cruel, The Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour, and Big Star's In The Street (used as the theme for the TV sitcom That 70s Show) polished the night into one big happy sing-along.

Cheap Trick continues its North American tour with a number of Canadian stops, including Victoria, Calgary, Thunder Bay, and Montreal.

Up next on the Sault Michigan Kewadin Casino entertainment roster are Trisha Yearwood on Sunday, March 2 and Don Williams on Thursday, April 3.

Great show, not bad for guys in their 60's, they didn't miss a beat with Dax Nielson on drums replacing Bun E. Carlos
