NEWS RELEASE

SAULT STE. MARIE
POLICE SERVICE

***************************
At approximately 5:15 a.m. this morning, city police received a 911 call regarding a robbery that had just occurred at the Metro Store in the Market Mall.

A lone male attended in the store and stole the cash register drawer from the female clerk.

A male employee chased the suspect out of the store.

The suspect threw the cash register drawer at the male and threatened to hurt him, but neither employee was physically harmed.

The suspect continued to flee the area.

Another customer arriving at the store spoke to the employee and pointed out a vehicle that he had observed the suspect get into.

The vehicle was leaving the parking lot as several police vehicles were on their way to the call.

One of the cruisers observed a vehicle hit a snow bank on Second Line West, quickly leave the area and head north on Farwell Terrace.

These officers decided to check this vehicle out and observed the vehicle turn onto Rossmore Road and strike another snow bank.

Officers approached the vehicle and confirmed this was the suspect from the robbery.

The stolen money was located with the suspect.

27-year-old Justin Whalen of no fixed address was taken into custody and has been charged with one count of robbery and one count of breach of probation for failing to keep the peace and be good.

He will be appearing in bail court this morning.

B Boy 2/20/2014 9:06:12 AM Report

Sounds like a pretty fast response time by the police, nice job. Now let's hope he gets what he deserves in court but I doubt he'll smarten up based how often he's in the police releases.
crashed13 2/20/2014 9:18:45 AM Report

Did not know you can have a drivers license and Insurance without a address.

How does a person with no fixed address get bail or probation?

I hope they give him a address in bail court this morning but I doubt it.
Wisenheimer 2/20/2014 9:31:40 AM Report

27 years old and no fixed address.
Got one, Millhaven Prison, Kingston, Ontario. Fully subsidized by Canadian taxpayers.
MikeQ 2/20/2014 9:56:09 AM Report

@wisenheimer

I Lol'd. I wonder if people actually can update their mailing address to a city prison if they are there more than they are anywhere else.

Mailing address: City Jail or your local Metro.
Tag33&1/3rd 2/20/2014 9:57:59 AM Report

Obviously needs help--probably a drug addiction. Maybe instead of locking him up --maybe just maybe help him and send him to detox then they will get him in a treatment centre to work on his addiction and hopefully get healthy and stay that way. Not everyone should be locked up and forgotten about.
back4more 2/20/2014 10:08:27 AM Report

Gee,, thanks Tag, for that brilliant statement....can he live at your place for the time being then?
Corr 2/20/2014 10:08:53 AM Report

put it to sleep
asp 2/20/2014 10:17:49 AM Report

Another Whalen at it!!! The criminal juctice system is crazy, the police must get fed up always arresting the same guys over and over again. Just like my nephew he is always in trouble but keeps getting off. (I wish they would put them into a drug program like Elliot Lake) The jail here doesn't have qualified workers to really deal with the deep issues. When they are in jail they just attend these programs because they get bored, and when they are release they continue repeating the same crime. Deep issue are not being dealth with.
Sam C 2/20/2014 10:56:00 AM Report

Just a couple of points. You can certainly own a car and get insurance, as long as you have a mailing address.

I read a lot of comments about people with "no fixed address," mostly negative. There are all sorts of reasons why some people might -- legitimately -- have "no fixed address." At one point I was NFA... I sold my house and went to Teachers college, living in motels during school and placements, and when I was done until I could find something more permanent.

Some people "couch surf" because they can't find an apartment, or can't afford one on their own.

Granted, the people we read about in the Police Beat might be NFA for different reasons, but don't assume that NFA means "lowlife."

@asp... he may share a surname with another notorious Sault villain, but let's not be too hasty to paint everyone with that brush.

You might recall that Justice Larry Whalen served us well as an Ontario Court judge.

I know several other 'Whalens' whose names you likely won't ever see in Police Beat.
back4more 2/20/2014 11:04:31 AM Report

Sam's last name is Whalen.
crashed13 2/20/2014 11:55:22 AM Report

@ SamC

If your even staying at a friends or relatives while looking for your own place you use those address as your address in the mean time.

No Fix Address implies that even your friends and relatives have given you the boot and your actually on the street.

Its actually illegal to have a address on your ID like drivers licences or heath card that is not your current living residence.

I never seen a drivers licences with "No Fix Address" in the address part of it.
thesharr 2/20/2014 12:19:58 PM Report

Metro 2nd line + timmies(next door)= Cops.
roxpin 2/20/2014 12:33:33 PM Report

He has a good shot for being on the show Worlds dumbest criminals! 2 snow banks he hit? or he will say the snowbanks hit him
ROLAND_ROLLY 2/20/2014 12:34:21 PM Report

Maybe when they let this loser off, he will get another chance to hurt or kill someone when driving.

Should be locked up and the key thrown away. If you disagree, give the court your name and address and let him stay with you and your family.

Time to get these punks off the street.
Javaman 2/20/2014 12:57:08 PM Report

HE NEEDS TO GO TO driving school.
TotallyConfused 2/20/2014 1:30:17 PM Report

How nice, little brother is following in the footsteps of big brother!!!
Just Curious 2/20/2014 1:46:26 PM Report

crashed, Sam's right.. As long as you have a mail box address you are OK to own and insure a car. No fixed address just means you are not living at that address. I have had a mailbox address for several years and have lived and stayed all over hell. Technically, no fixed address.. Even the court was OK with it... And I'm over 70...:)
cozzy 2/20/2014 2:41:46 PM Report

Tim Hortons and Call Centers are always hiring. While they may not be the best places to work in... you EARN your wages. Really pathetic how you can justify theft because of a personal situation.

Maybe one day.. when you grow up... you'll understand that what you said is incredibly stupid, and the number of words you used will ALWAYS be higher than your IQ.

Oh yeah, you're a smart guy alright. You can't even string along a coherent sentence with proper grammar or sentence structure. You were definitely college or university material.

Those of us in society who have paid our dues with high school, countless nights of studying, going to university and busting our asses to maintain good grades and a job to pay our bills know - that not even for a second were you EVER that type of person.

Without using google, you probably don't even know what I.Q even stands for.
