Sault Ste. Marie City Council fosters Olympic spirit for local athletes

SAULT STE. MARIE, ON - City Council and municipal staff will display their Olympic spirit and pride by wearing red and white attire at the February 18 Council meeting.

A Go Canada Go banner will be draped on the front of Mayor Debbie Amaroso’s desk at Monday’s meeting to encourage residents to show their Olympic pride for local athletes competing at the 2014 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in Sochi, Russia.

Participating athletes from Sault Ste. Marie or with a Sault Ste. Marie connection include:

  • Team Brad Jacobs (Brad Jacobs, E.J. Harnden, Ryan Harnden, alternate Caleb Flaxey and coach Tom Coulterman) – curling

  • Mac Marcoux and BJ (Billy Joe) Marcoux – para-Alpine Racing

  • Ted Nolan – coach, Latvian men’s hockey team

  • Jeff Carter (former Sault Greyhound player) – men’s hockey

  • Mike Smith (husband of Sault Ste. Marie’s Brigette Acton) – goaltender, men’s hockey

  • Kaitlyn Weaver (former Sault Figure Skating Club member ) – ice dance

City CAO Joe Fratesi invites residents to decorate their homes or businesses with Canadian flags – or other items to show continued support for all Canadian athletes.

Local media and delegations attending the February 18 meeting are encouraged to come dressed in red and white as well.

I thought council had a policy of universal neutrality on all issues. I'm outraged.

I think this is an awesome idea & also for the rest of us to wear red & white, display red & white, etc. Have a little pride in your city & for the awesome athletes that have been representing us Saultites & all Canadians on the world stage! Ya, there must be something wrong with supporting our own (eyes rolling here). I will definitely be in the RED zone!

Sexual preference/relationships shouldn't even be a topic of concern in the Olympics.

I think the city should consider re-naming Anita Blvd. to Team Jacob's Blvd. There are two parts to Anita Blvd. and I'm suggesting the part where the curling rink sits . These guys have been and continue to be great ambassadors of the city. I am proud to say they are from the Sault.
I wish them continued success!

There's another long thread running about the Mayor & the rainbow flag...wearing the RED & WHITE is how our city is representing our country's athlete's, including the gay ones!!! How many ways do they need to say it? I'm in support of this idea & the other decision that seems to be so controversial & unnecessarily I might add. I agree with the Team Jacob's street, great idea, if all don't agree, I won't have a fit haha.
