Could a Shoppers Drug Mart be opening in the old Pino's location? (updated)

Tuesday, February 11, 2014   by: Kenneth Armstrong

February 11 update - The job postings mentioned in the following article have since been removed from the Shopper Drug Mart job site and

Is there some development on the former Pino’s Get Fresh location on Trunk Road?

The building at 197 Trunk Road has not been in use since 2009, when the new location was built directly next door.

Recent postings on the Shoppers Drug Mart website show that the company is seeking to fill multiple positions, including store manager, for "199 Trunk Road".

Identical job postings are also on job websites such as

The address of the old Pino's location is 197 Trunk Road, the new Pino's location is at 219 Trunk Road.

Nothing is confirmed, but the address difference suggests that there may be a construction project in the works which may or may not include demolishing the old location for a potential new Shoppers Drug Mart store.

Current Pino’ store manager Mark Bellini was not able to comment when contacted Monday, but Shoppers Drug Mart was able to confirm that a new store is in the works for Sault Ste. Marie.

Lana Gogas, the manager of communications and corporate affairs for Shoppers Drug Mart, stated, "We hope to open a new store in the area this year," but could not confirm an address or date of opening at this time.

Shoppers Drug Mart already has two full-line stores and a Home Health Store in Sault Ste. Marie, but none in the city's east end. will bring you more as the story develops.

Yeah that's exactly what we need ...
Sam C 2/10/2014 5:43:08 PM Report

Why not? I'm not a fan, but it seems that plenty of others are. Plus, there will be construction jobs, followed by retail jobs and a new business to pay taxes.
nanag 2/10/2014 6:07:33 PM Report

why? why? why? there is a pharmacy on the corner of lake and trunk. why do we need another pharmacy? why shopper's ??????
why can't we have something else? something we don't already have here?this town is so boring... we need a little variety. I guess we should at least be thankful it isn't another walmart.
dust2 2/10/2014 6:23:09 PM Report

more "jobs", less "careers".

just more positions to fill with middle-aged nobodies, leaving students once again struggling to find work and leaving less real opportunity. People are getting an education here and leaving for good, can't blame them either.
Mr. Poster 2/10/2014 6:37:37 PM Report

We must set a record for the most drug stores per capita. How do they all survive?
Beats22 2/10/2014 6:38:36 PM Report

Wow...the traffic in this area is going to be unreal!!!
zzeke 2/10/2014 6:42:25 PM Report

Ya leave the building empty because we like closed up places of business in this city
Boomboom 2/10/2014 6:49:49 PM Report

They all survive juuuuust fine...
R0FL0L 2/10/2014 7:16:50 PM Report

Shoppers was bought by Loblaws--No?
They also have groceries. Most likely Presidents Choice (now that it belongs to Loblaws?) I can not see Pino to agree to any competition like this.
The Metro has a Pharmacy and isn't there an IDEAL close by (not Wellington Square), behind where Blockbuster was? Not to forget the already mentioned Rexall.
frauleinbroomhilda 2/10/2014 7:55:17 PM Report

Wish it was Costco
kasy126 2/10/2014 8:04:27 PM Report

This is to dust2, for your information us middle aged nobodies need to survive too. I am a little older than middle aged but have recently been widowed, to young for pension so have to get back out to the work force.
Boomboom 2/10/2014 8:12:22 PM Report

$12.4 Billion dollar take over. Its in final stages of approvals then will be owned by Loblaws. Will be a monster once complete and a strong business once combined.
soowat 2/10/2014 8:21:57 PM Report

When you walk through Pino's there are all kinds of No Name and President's choice products which are both Loblaw's Brands. How much,if any, of Pino's does Loblaw's already own?

sweetc 2/10/2014 8:27:53 PM Report

why shoppers drug mart? I would love one in the east end. Metro drug dept closes at 9 as does Rexall and at 6:00 on Sunday Square Mall closes at 6 except Friday I think. If you need even an aspirin at 10:00 at night you are going up the hill to Shoppers... Good for them if they open in the east end.
BlackHelix 2/10/2014 8:29:32 PM Report

@kasy126 For you information, you completely missed the point. What have you been doing for the last 50(ish) years? I'm sorry for your loss (truly), and the point obviously doesn't apply to everyone but you have to understand the argument.

Students work minimum wage jobs to pay for school. They then use that education to obtain better paying jobs in the future. You have had a lifetime of opportunity to go to (or back to) school, find a good paying job, etc. You don't see an disparity here?

CRaginskis 2/10/2014 8:45:44 PM Report

Here's that I see - So many Tim Horton's, now more drug stores, maybe it's just me, but it looks like the city is gearing up to become another retirement community like Elliott Lake.....
Mr. Poster 2/10/2014 8:54:34 PM Report

crag...we are already there.
Bad Dawg 2/10/2014 9:42:48 PM Report

what are you people bitching about now?? a bussiness opening or the fact that students won't get a job at shoppers cause some old people didn't plan for retirement and they have a better chance of getting hired?? I'm sure those college students will survive just fine, most will probably end up working at shoppers after they graduate.

I say good for shoppers....... did you people bitch and complain when little ceasars opened, metro has a pizza shop and there is wackywings and a few more down trunk rd?? all close together
canadiens_8 2/11/2014 12:14:49 AM Report

Why would a Shoppers open there? There is a Rexall just down the road.
GoHoundsGo 2/11/2014 7:10:49 AM Report

WOW, only in the Soo would people bitch about a bussiness opening. The arguement that there already pharmacys in the area in just silly...competition people !!! I'm sure they have done their studies and determined the area will support it. As for taking jobs away from students, I have been in Shoppers on the hill and many other pharmacies in town and have seen plenty of students working in all of them. Besides it opens up a few new career positions, like Pharmasists and a Store Manager. More jobs period...I say. But I will agree with some of the responces, this city needs to get away from the Elliot Lake will kill this city, a city grows from its youth and young families, nothing against seniors, but the youth and 20, 30 and 40 somethings spend more, consume more and the ones to start bussinesses. Gawd I want a COSTCO in the Soo so
crashed13 2/11/2014 8:38:12 AM Report

Built next to a new Rexall. The population is aging to support so many drug stores that close together.
GrammaDingbat54 2/11/2014 9:24:03 AM Report

It would be great to have a Shoppers' at this end of town. They sell grocery items, however. Does Pino really want that competition? Why not a Giant Tiger....they've been searching for a location here for three years but were turned down because they sell grocery items as well. There's going to be another location opening up with Liquidation World closing.
Just Curious 2/11/2014 10:02:56 AM Report

Gramma, as the ads are out for staffing one would have to assume it's a done deal. As for foodstuffs, they stock about the same as a Mac's, not a full scale store like Pinos'. He sold the property so he must be OK with it. Can't see were 2 Walmarts hurt him that much, the place is always busy when I go there. Any kind of business is good business. Giant Tiger likes to be close to other stores to draw walkin business, not out on their own like LW was..
R0FL0L 2/11/2014 10:09:24 AM Report

you are right about the products in Pino's. But he is the only independent left, that is why he can go and buy products that he wants to sell. I remember years ago, when IDA wanted to "buy" him out and he fought hard to stay independent. I think that has not changed.
And I am not bitching about a new store or what kind of jobs are coming to the Soo. (every job is better than NO job) just asking questions. That is what you do in a discussion, putting questions and thoughts out and see what comes back :)
If a giant like Shoppers opens, are others able to remain open? And for the opening hours, the Shoppers in the west end -is that one open all night? Rexall is being told by head office what the opening hours are. I spoke with the pharmacist once.
The Sault Star has an article about the GHC moving some offices up Great Northern, across from Lukenda Drive, in that article is talk about a Shoppers up there. I mean really we don't need to replace the old water main and sewer, we are in the process of moving the whole city. New subdivisions come with new pipes :)
Lynx 2/11/2014 10:11:20 AM Report

How about an LCBO for the EastEnders?
saultbie25 2/11/2014 11:06:08 AM Report

Everyone seems to forget that Pinos owns that whole property and empty building. I doubt he would sell it for any kind of competition.

We also forgot that in the west end there is a Shoppers, market mall pharmacy, the medicine shop, rexall and on wellington by carmens way another ida pharmacy. Also I would like to add that the hoppers in the west end is NOT open until midnight, it is closed at 9 on weekdays and 5 or 6 on weekends.

We really need an old navy, american eagle, victorias secret and we could really use an actual DOLLAR store (no more of this $1 and up bs)
MoesTavern 2/11/2014 11:07:11 AM Report

R0FL: you read that article wrong. It stated that there is no additional pharmacy past the current Shoppers on Great Northern Rd. GHC is going to be putting their own in their new building. Doubtful it would be a Shoppers.

As for Rexall and other pharmacies, Shoppers can go whereever they want. It's called competition; and those who don't keep up will not survive.

Also, what are you all going to say when Sootoday tells you that a new Timmies is slated to open at the corner of Boundary Rd. and Trunk Rd. What ever will McDonald's do...
Just Curious 2/11/2014 11:12:10 AM Report

RE the update, they probably have 50,000 applications already...:)
ssmrental 2/11/2014 11:15:10 AM Report

I think only one person touched on it, it is called babyboomers this is only the beginning you will see more and more drug stores open up as majority of our population will be 50+ and popping pills like there is no tomorrow because doctors dont have time to talk to every patient so they prescribe anything to get them out the door
R0FL0L 2/11/2014 11:35:43 AM Report

you are right, I read something "into" the article. We have to wait and see who is opening a Pharmacy in "New Sault Ste. Marie"
The Giant eats all other and ooppss no more!! competition. Now let the fun begin. Everything has 2 sides. The trick is to keep a balance.
If they build a new Tim Horton at the corner of Boundary Rd. and Trunk Rd. please make sure they have enough room for the drive thru. And choose the newest LOOK "Tim Horton's locations that are under renovation will be receiving brand new electric fireplaces and flat screen TV's" now that would just wonderful on a cold day like today :) and watching the Olympic ;) another wish bring back the cherry pie :)
MoesTavern 2/11/2014 11:48:48 AM Report

see page 2 for confirmation :)

Who cares,it'll just be another store like Pino's with outrageous prices.
Mr. Poster 2/11/2014 1:46:24 PM Report

How do folks afford Pinos?
Lone24 2/11/2014 2:24:03 PM Report

People who have lots of money to throw money away, that's how.
Just Curious 2/11/2014 2:26:57 PM Report

Actually, I found Pinos' prices very competitive the last time I was there, some stuff even cheaper than Basics..Love his fresh veggies, only place I ever seen radishes the size of tennis balls..:)
justsomeguy 2/11/2014 4:02:40 PM Report

"only place I ever seen radishes the size of tennis balls"

Large grapes, radishes, etc... all the result of powerful growth hormones.

Ever seen grapes that are grown for juicing only? They are much smaller & round.
Lone24 2/12/2014 12:58:01 PM Report

That is exactly what it is, just a bunch of growth harmones in all the food we eat. Which does damage to the human body in the long run.
kasy126 2/12/2014 11:10:26 PM Report

Dear Helix, for your information I have gone back to school in my some 50ish years and paid for it, I have also helped my 4 children get thier college degrees. All my point was is "middle aged nobodies" are not trying to take jobs from students. We just need to survive also. Sorry you all took it wrong.
