SAULT STE MARIE, MI - During the workday, she is an experienced urologist who delivers expert care to men and women suffering from urological disorders.

With her free time, she’s mushing a line of huskies through snow and cold in a pastime she finds exhilarating.

Meet Dr. Lynne McCormick – the newest addition to the War Memorial Hospital medical community.

Lynne McCormick, D.O. began seeing patients at her WMH practice in the Community Medical Center this month, following several years of practice in Anchorage, Alaska.

Michigan, however, is her home state and she was pleased to return and open a practice in Sault Ste. Marie.

Born in Flint, she spent a good deal of her early career in East Lansing, where she completed her urology residency at Michigan State University as well as additional post-doctoral training in general surgery.

From 1999 through May of 2005, she served as an assistant professor of urology at MSU.

Since then, she has worked as the urology service chief at the Alaska Native Medical Center – a move she made when the Lansing economy declined.

“Overnight, more than 3,300 people were out of work because of General Motors closures. I went to Anchorage because it is recession and depression resistant thanks to the oil economy and tourism,” she explained.

Michigan, however, holds particular appeal as the doctor still has family in the Plymouth area.

Family has played a big role in her career as well.

In her youth, McCormick’s younger brother was a renal transplant patient – giving the future doctor great exposure to the work of a urologist.

“It was a life experience that led me to my specialty,” she explained.

The doctor will treat a wide variety of urological conditions, including, but not limited to: Kidney stones, Incontinence and overactive bladder, male infertility, prostate enlargement, a variety of cancers, interstitial cystitis and painful bladder syndrome. She also performs some office procedures, including vasectomies and infant circumcisions.

McCormick has particular interest in the areas of kidney stone treatment and incontinence surgery.

She has already initiated discussions at War Memorial to bring a technique known as lithotripsy to the area.

This process uses sound waves to break kidney stones into smaller pieces that are more easily passed.

To schedule an appointment to see Dr. McCormick, call Upper Peninsula Urology at (906) 632-5808.
