Epic fail at Carpin Beach Road (2 photos)

Tuesday, February 04, 2014   by: Staff

Loyal reader Leslie Greenwood sent in these photos of a failed attempt at a wide turn at Carpin Beach Road.

The flatbed trailer of the transport truck enered the ditch at Base Line Road, directly in front of R.M. Moore Public School.

Greenwood said "there was no way he would make the corner but the attempt was there."

Saw that truck go by my place this AM. Another case , PROBABLY, of somebody relying on GPS instead of actually knowing where in hell they were going. People need to start learning to read a map instead of relying on technology..:)

From the 2nd picture it looks like he should be able to drive it right out no?

Merling you forgot to turn the right way to your house going the wrong way lol

I saw a tractor trailer loaded with steel coils going west on Wawanosh last week. How the guy got that out of the grands with the roads so narrow beats me.

@Just Curious.. what's the difference? GPS is an electronic map. Furthermore, a paper map won't tell you which corners transports can and cannot get around. Now...try responding to this with a pen instead of "technology". haha

GPS = Gin positioning system, in this case.

Killswitch... some GPS offer a "shortest route" setting, which will often provide an inappropriate route.

I suspect this driver may have simply turned left instead of right when leaving Essar, or Flakeboard.

wallyhunter 2/4/2014 10:10:37 PM Report

How about the fact that he isnt very far from the flake board plant
tommy_boi07 2/4/2014 10:21:43 PM Report

Killswitch: While a gps may be just a digital map, people do rely to heavily on the turn by turn directions and end up lost. I remember a few years ago a woman headed for Thunder Bay ended up getting her vehicle stuck overnight after her gps took her down a bush trail near the end of mission road in Goulais.
canadiens_8 2/4/2014 10:26:08 PM Report

A lot of times a GPS is more reliable than a map. GPS can be updated all the time and how often are maps updated?
Pakadeva 2/4/2014 10:51:41 PM Report

That happened to me as well! I used mine in a part of Southern Ontario that I was not familiar with. When I saw the one road...yup, that turn I remember, after that, instead of taking me west, it took me north, way back in the freakin woods! I eventually found my way out, but, I don't trust the thing now LOL AND it was set on fastest route! ....12 hours later instead of 6!
macapple 2/5/2014 12:37:49 AM Report

lots of room to turn corner he cut it too short
Bad Dawg 2/5/2014 12:59:15 AM Report

he made a mistake.... no one got hurt prolly a lil embarrassed

It's a good idea to always carry an actual map when going on a trip. GPS's are great for finding your way on main roadways, but typing in the shortest routes can get you into some serious troubles especially oversized vehicles. We tried it ONCE in our car before we learned. It told us to go up a steep uphill grade on a narrow bush trail that looked full of washouts and ruts full of water. It might have been fun on an ATV lol. We turned around right away.
Another problem with GPS's... uncharted detours can totally confuse them and you.
OnTheHill 2/5/2014 6:58:59 AM Report

Have always had problems with "fastest" and "scenic" routes. Always carry a map and we use it. That way I can say we've never been lost. GPS is nice --- if someone has laid out the map correctly ON the GPS. Remember how long it took to put the new 4-lane on. Out of town friends actually thought they were driving through the bush for a bit. If Google is wrong, so is your GPS. CARRY A MAP!

I see cars in the ditch every second day...epic fail? happens.
Sam C 2/5/2014 9:43:57 AM Report

Karl... this is an "epic fail" because one expects truckers to be better than dropping the trailer into a ditch.

Another trucker made a similar mistake -- forgetting where his trailer was -- last summer at Pine and McNabb... trying to make the right turn onto Pine and took out the traffic light.
KickerL7 2/5/2014 9:45:29 AM Report

This has nothing to do with gps. The trailer looks like a float trailer meaning there may be construction in the area or he was just dropping off a piece of equipment. The driver simply did not take the corner wide enough. Mistakes happen and he could be a new driver.
old-cat33 2/5/2014 9:52:15 AM Report

LOL ,LOL,I wish that I can show this to my MTO Examiner.See I would tell her Nobody's perfect!

Sam C = Epic fail :)
dingus 2/5/2014 10:02:17 AM Report

GPS= Geee Probably Stuck
CharminBuddy 2/5/2014 2:28:02 PM Report

He totally cut the corner and there is no way there was enough room to even make the turn successfully....nor drive outta the ditch. GPS likely involved with bad directions....oh well...I am sure he won't take route again in the future.
Mr_Moose23 2/5/2014 4:39:30 PM Report

I can say this as a truck driver there is more then enough room to make that corner with a set of trains. end of story he didn't swing out far enough to allow the second trailer to make the corner. by the looks of it his first trailer barely made it. sometimes it happens but in this case definitely driver error nothing else.
Mr_Moose23 2/5/2014 4:40:47 PM Report

and my mistake looked like trains from the second picture but its a single trailer my bad. still enough room though. haha smh
