Community centre drifting towards a safety concern

Thursday, January 30, 2014   by: Staff

There appears to be a potentially serious safety concern at the Northern Community Centre (formerly West End Community Centre) on Goulais Avenue.

Concerned reader Brad King sent in a photo which he says shows an emergency exit at the facility taped off.

Through the glass a snow drift appears to have accumulated to about chest height.

"All exits at the community center are taped of with caution tape, I'm guessing it's more than just this one door," says King.

It is unlikely that the door could be opened in an emergency because the door pushes outward toward the snow drift.

The phone number listed for the Northern Community Centre on the city's website directs to the Community Centres Division, where a message was left Thursday but not immediately returned.

they won't return the message or phone call, they'll just plow out the snow drifts and try and pretend it was only this door, and that nothing ever happened. Although it is kind of hard to keep the door clear with the winter storms we've had...they need to come up with a way to keep the snow from building up in that corner and around other emergency exits to start with instead of having it open to the point that drifts can even get that bad.

The fire marshall must love pictures like this. Especially in public buildings.

They have had this door taped off pretty much since the first snowfall. Not sure of the reason but they've made no effort to clear the snow there all winter. I would imagine that some sort of covered exit needs to be constructed due to snow sliding off of the metal roof when the sun is shining. I haven't noticed any other doors in the building taped off - just this one. I would definitely be concered if there was no effort made to clear snow from the fire exits inside the field area, for example. I believe those doors are taped off because they are alarmed.

THAT IS CRAZY! Are we in a third world country? There are serious safety issues that demand emergency exits. If emergency exits are buried there are no emergency exits in that building!!! IT SHOULD BE CLOSED!!! Until emergency exits are made available! We do not need a crowd of dead people trapped in a building because management is asleep!

Brad should make a health and safety complaint to 1877-202-0008
