She's seeking your support in her re-election

Friday, January 24, 2014   by: Staff

Susan Myers is seeking the support of Ward 2 residents in her decision to run for re-election in Ward 2.

The second-term City Councillor and retired Tourism Marketing professional is filing her nomination papers at 10:30 a.m. this morning.

"I retired 10 years ago as the manager of marketing and tourism for the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation and have continued to champion this city at every opportunity to promote a strong economy.  What is good for Sault Ste. Marie is good for Ward 2."

Myers chaired Sault Ste. Marie's year long 100th Anniversary "Celebrate 100!" in 2012 and put in many volunteer hours over and above her regular duties of Council.

"I am so proud of this community that I felt it was important to mark the 100 year milestone. Ward 2 has been a big part of that history. It's where I was born and raised and where my dad had his business; Ward 2 is my home. It was an honour to lead the anniversary event on behalf of City Council, our staff and the community at large."

Looking ahead, one piece of business Myers wants to address is to further the accountability of the members of City Council through a review of the Council Code of Conduct.

"Four years ago, I brought forward a resolution that led to the creation of the first ever Code of Conduct for the Mayor and Members of Council. It was a good start but it needs to be reviewed.

Sadly we have seen municipalities struggle with the issue of conduct of their elected officials. The electorate needs to know the members of City Council adhere to a Code of Conduct as do our city employees, and that there is an effective process in place should an issue arise."

Myers says she feels the most important aspect of her work is to respond swiftly to the concerns of residents in her ward.

Over the past seven years she's developed a good rapport with staff and believes her role as Councillor is to be a team player and work with the city staff to address the concerns of those in her ward and resolve issues as quickly and thoroughly as possible.

"Sometimes it's tough sitting at the budget table. We ask staff to keep the operating costs down so that we might keep the tax levy down and then ask the same staff to provide even more services in response to resident requests.

We must always look for improvement and efficiencies while providing consistent service to our ratepayers. Residents need to know what to expect and be assured they get the utmost value for the tax dollars we are all paying."

Ward 2 could use some new faces.

I hope ward 2 does not forget how she tried to ban a long time favorite thing of many, back yard fires.

One of the few affordable things left that families can do.
Pearl_48 1/24/2014 10:05:47 AM Report

If you guys in that ward re-elect her, you guys are messed up!! Sick of people like that. You can't fix stupid so you better re-elect someone else. She wants the support but she tries to do the dumbest thing ever and ban backyard fires???
edz 1/24/2014 10:12:13 AM Report

one of the worst things ever to have happened to ward 2 and the sault.

The whole council could use some new faces...
Me Myself an I 1/24/2014 10:21:18 AM Report

Problem is need more then two people to run in the ward, last time there were three, but one guy pulled out before the election.
flyhawk25 1/24/2014 10:22:15 AM Report

Ms Myers has my support. She is a woman of integrity who communicates promptly with her constituents.
And - I don't always agree with her.

Voters of Ward 2.

Please remember that Ms. Me Me I I is on public record, stating she is in favour of a tax increase every year.

Get her out of there!!!!
Do not vote for her .......
Retreaded 1/24/2014 10:35:13 AM Report

It needs to be a clean sweep in ward 2...does anyone even remember the name of the other ward 2 rep? You will hear lots from these two NOW...only because it is an election year. BEWARE.
Leftheel 1/24/2014 10:36:55 AM Report

Sadly it's politics. She complains about doing more and getting paid the same, welcome to our world, most of us who have jobs take on more responsibility without a pay increase. The big difference is that council can make the decision to take more of our tax dollars to get compensation and the rest of us don't. I don't live in Ward 2 but please don't re-elect her.
brittz 1/24/2014 10:57:53 AM Report

why don't more know-it-alls run against her then? Seems like the only way to get rid of a bad politician is to replace them with another bad politician! Ok maybe I'm being too pessimistic.
eadiecougs 1/24/2014 11:05:23 AM Report

she didnt want Kiss to come here rem .I thought sault ste marie was open for business not with stupid people like that

How dare you imply that people should use logic and rationale instead of just complaining!? You and your accurate realism have no place on this comment thread!

TFinn 1/24/2014 11:17:58 AM Report

Please enlighten me why she should be re-elected for ward 2. What, if anything did she accomplish on the disaster on the Queen St. East construction job.? Which BTW was over budget, over due .. not to mention still not complete and an absolute pain in the ass for all who lived in the area affected. To me, she had her chance to show what she could do ..when the fiasco construction job was seriously behind schedule, she did nothing for the benefit of these citizens ..and now is asking these same people to re-elect her ..!! People should vote for the best person they feel can do the job .. and In my opinion I don’t think that she can fill that position . . !
Nimrod 1/24/2014 11:22:11 AM Report

This council has done nothing except spend and raise taxes!! Time for a complete flush down at the "Ivory Tower".
soowat 1/24/2014 11:23:06 AM Report

How do you "re-elect someone else?"

Just Curious 1/24/2014 11:38:36 AM Report

And also a long-time family friend, I believe you said once, Fly? I don't live in her ward but if I did wouldn't vote for her. The backyard fire thing and the great Kiss debacle(even tho I don't like Kiss, a lot of people do)are two things that come to mind in her dis-favour. It's a toss-up on council between her, Sheehan, or Butland as to who can talk longer without saying anything...IMHO..
Wicket 1/24/2014 11:44:15 AM Report

Well, how many of you are willing to let your name stand for Ward 2 councillor.
We have had no choices, Sheehan doesn't return calls or e-mails; when I finally got to speak with him a couple of years ago and questioned him about this; his response - Susan and I work well together and she has the time to respond to questions. We speak with each other all the time about issues.

Yah, right! KISS concert prime example - one on the right and the other at the concert!
Lone24 1/24/2014 11:50:14 AM Report

I agree they should get rid of all the ones in city council with new ones. Ones that aren't related to any of them in there now.
GotRotties 1/24/2014 11:58:16 AM Report

Well lucky you "flyhawk" but when I sent her an email message regarding an issue I had in this ward, I guess she accidently hit "reply to all" because I got a copy of her asking someone "who is this person? I don't even know them"...I am one of your constituents stupid, I didn't know I had to be a friend of yours in order for you to address an issue! And THAT"S why she shouldn't get elected!!
ShawnM 1/24/2014 12:00:21 PM Report

Its funny because the last election the person who put their name in but then withdrew from the election still ended up getting about 600 votes... that tells me a lot of people are unhappy with her. Hopefully someone else runs.
Miss Kitty 1/24/2014 12:20:23 PM Report

I think like many others do...We need new faces in council and a new mayor as well, people that are open to change and are accountable.
Retreaded 1/24/2014 12:23:46 PM Report problem...who wants to run??
GotRotties 1/24/2014 12:41:45 PM Report

I would like someone with some sort of integrity to run, someone that's not going to protect the jobs of their cronies at city hall, someone who will make sure these dumpy houses, owned by slumlords, that have court case after court case and nothing is done, start coming down They waste our taxes on inspectors that only try and protect their jobs by multiple inspections at the same place and then allow the slumlord to continue pretending he is doing something good. I would like someone to help IMPROVE our section of the city, we pay a lot of taxes and we have NO RIGHTS!
Sault Boy 1/24/2014 12:43:54 PM Report

Myers doesn't call people back!
northernmale 1/24/2014 12:59:36 PM Report

I am sure if its the rite names show up on her phone she calls back. She only rembers the ones that can help and her friends.
Dictionary 1/24/2014 1:04:03 PM Report

admittedly the backyard fire NIMBY issue really diminished my respect for her... I like Terry though!
Gumby54 1/24/2014 1:06:38 PM Report

Meyers is not the only Councillor who fails to respond to their constituents. There are others who are just as complacent. One of my councillor's response when finally contacted was 'I am not really technologically competent - that's why I do not respond to emails.' Well if you aren't competent enuf to keep up with technology then you are not the person who requires my vote. Agreed it is time we get some younger blood involved - it will be their city eventually.
Paddlenut 1/24/2014 1:07:34 PM Report

OK. I'll give 'er a go.

I plan to eliminate:

1. Mean people
2. Blackfly bites
3. Fallen leaves
4. People who don't turn right-on-red at Pim and Queen
5. Unexplained wetness on door handles
6. Farting in public
7. Christmas music before Dec 1st.
8. Rob Ford stories beyond a 50km radius of Toronto
9. Wedgies
10. Faith in politicians
JellyFisch 1/24/2014 1:13:02 PM Report

I would love to compete against Susan Myers. I believe her ideals are not in sync with our time and votes for projects and plans counter-productive to what this city needs.

I would like to run on the basis of getting this city on a proper budget. Finding out what things aren't necessary and high costing and reduce the expenditure while voting to keep the taxes the same.

However I feel I am too young and lack life experience. I do not know many other aspects of the job and feel unqualified. But I feel like this city needs big change.
Paddlenut 1/24/2014 1:14:56 PM Report

Maybe you're exactly what we need J-Fish. What's your position on wedgies?
Norm 1/24/2014 1:41:19 PM Report

The people brought Steve Butland back after all the CAO foolishness that went on in the nineties e.g."Best Man For the Job'' book for anyone who doubts that foolishness. If they vote Steve back, they'll re-elect Myers, she's never been involved in anything like that as far I know.
soowat 1/24/2014 1:46:52 PM Report

First, I am not a resident of Ward 2.and I've never met Ms Meyers

Second when watching council meetings on Cable 10 I have never heard Ms. Meyers speak disrespectfully to or about anyone

Third some of the posters need to follow Ms. Meyer's example. You can disagree, you can decide not to vote for her, but you don't have to be disrespectful.

David, she puts her name out there as a public figure... Not the same thing at all. I'm sure if she didn't have too she wouldn't.. Would you vote for someone using an alias? Don't think so..
Pakadeva 1/24/2014 4:08:08 PM Report

Would that be a breach of confidentialty when she tosses your email to everyone else?

Not to mention the totally rude comment of...who is this, don't know the person. Ok, she can't be expected to know everyone, but, as others have mentioned, it gives the "impression" that she only responds &/or helps those that she knows on a personal basis. There is nothing polite about that situation AT ALL. If someone takes on the position, they also take on the responsibility of communicating with people in that ward. Or not.
Sorry, I don't know her, or any of you, but, some of the against arguments make sense if you have above grade 5 education?
BrianTheDog 1/24/2014 4:12:32 PM Report

Not a Sue fan. She is very arrogant.

The big problem in this city is that we have a lame duck mayor.
Retreaded 1/24/2014 6:10:16 PM Report

David Poluck 1/24/2014 6:38:32 PM Report

My feeling is if you have an opinion to offer you should take pride in the ownership of the statement.

Just Curious 1/24/2014 7:25:58 PM Report

Sorry, David. Apply that to my previous statements and everyone else's on here If we all used our real names there would be fighting in the streets. Grump would be so busy at the dump he would have to quit working. You want to put your name out there, feel free, just don't judge the rest of the world...

Myers...Butland.....Manzo,,,,,Turco...Fata....all represent the OLD SSM...they wallow in how great the city used to be. That kind of talk should be happening when they all gather at the mall for a coffee. We need FORWARD thinking councillors....AND...only one councillor per ward.
GotRotties 1/25/2014 10:04:28 AM Report

David Poluck

I am not hiding behind my alias, I said nothing rude nor untrue, if she were to read these comments she would know who I am....unless...she does that to that case she wouldn't need to know my name, she would know that she is in need of an attitude adjustment..I for one would run. But I cannot afford the cost of signage nor the application fee. I am sure she would be easy to beat, there are far too many disgruntled constituents. But lucky for her and her one ever runs against them.
flyhawk25 1/25/2014 1:47:17 PM Report

Susan Myers certainly does not need the job.She is retired and comfortable but believes in SSM and its potential.
I agree with her position on tax increases. We got into a mess with 'no tax increases because the steel plant could close. 'Now we see the results.
Watch council when she chairs the meeting. She is fair, articulate and prepared.
To belittle her for her alleged position on backyard bonfires - which is inaccurate- or her distaste for a rock group is silly.
She keeps constituents informed, is prepared and thoughtful.
If all members of council exhibited these traits we'd be much better off.
GotRotties 1/26/2014 9:42:45 AM Report

She "keeps constituents informed"? How does she do that? She won't even respond to a direct email! She is there doing something she thinks will elevate her in social standing and MAKE a better retirement fund for herself, because she sure doesn't listen to the city. She chooses to be for or against things according to her personal preferences, which is NOT the way an alderperson is supposed to decide on issues. She should be LISTENING to her ward and finding out what THEY want then accept the fact that the rest of the city may want the same thing. It isn't up to her and her almighty decision to go against something that the people want... for example the DOG PARK! I had some real issues with my property and things only got worse, NOTHING was done for me, other than finally receiving a truly rude and insulting email revealing her low opinion of the poor quality of a lot of the homes in this city.
