Fuel tax hike could be disaster for border towns

Monday, January 20, 2014   by: Staff

SARNIA – Haldimand-Norfolk MPP and Opposition Consumer Services Critic Toby Barrett predicts more border hopping for cheap gas if there’s a hike at the pumps.

“More expensive gas in Ontario - to pay for Toronto subways - by default means cheaper gas in the U.S. and more people buying product over the border,” Barrett said.

“The possibility of raising fuel prices another 10 cents a litre will be a disaster for the local community of Sarnia-Lambton because of the proximity to the border and the implications of cross-border shopping, which would be devastating to our small business community,” agreed Sarnia-Lambton MPP Bob Bailey.

Barrett was in Sarnia as part of a week-long tour with the province’s finance committee for pre-budget hearings.

Barrett, Bailey, Lambton-Kent-Middlesex MPP Monte McNaughton and Opposition Finance Critic Vic Fedeli stopped at a local Shell station to talk to the owner about the implications of the price hike proposed by the government’s transit panel.

“This government doesn’t have a revenue problem. This government has a spending problem. The last thing residents in Sarnia need is to pay an extra 10 cents per litre for gas, or having to pay more for the essentials like groceries and heat in our homes,” concluded Fedeli. “Ontarians deserve better. It’s time to change the team that leads this province.”

Just install speed camera's on our roads. They raise plenty of money in Australia and England. Might make our roads a little safer too.

Wynne has got to know it would be suicide at the polls if she introduces this tax. Of course, this doesn't mean she won't do it. Stupidity is contagious, and she has been exposed to Dalton.

It's only been what 3 years since the last 10 cent hike? Thank God the US gas is going down still.. Won't buy gas in Canada ever.. Government can suck it.

Sportsfan17 - the city council has already discussed red light cameras. They determined that there is no real need to them and they felt the associated costs would be too high.

Or better yet why the hell would I want to pay taxes for something I'll never use? I don't live in Toronto so why pay for something that will benefit Toronto?
Sam C 1/20/2014 4:44:59 PM Report

The border town argument won't have that much of an affect on Wynne. Ninety percent of the population of Ontario does not live "just across the bridge" from cheaper American gas. Most residents would waste what they would save driving to a border town and back.

Sportsfan, did you even read the article? Are you slow?

The problem isn't with revenue. We already pay some of the highest taxes in North America. The problem is the morons you vote for that spend it foolishly.

Due to the high cost of heating a home in NORTHERN ONTARIO this winter with the extreme low temperatures and old fashion winter like conditions , we are going to raise the cost of government parking in Southern Ontario(greater Toronto area) to offset the high heating cost for NORTHERN residence .We may also put a Footage tax on large homes in the GTA also, to provide NORTHERN residence with more cash relief!

Because TORONTO is the only part of Ontario that is recognized?

If TORONTO needs more money to transport people in TORONTO then do it. Simply raise the money in TORONTO for TORONTO.
Raising fuel taxes only helps the USA economy for border towns and hurts the Ontario Fuel Dealers.

Well she won't get my ten cents per litre ,just keep on buying over the river, fill up the motor home, come back and fill the truck and car from the motorhome. Still save over $100 bucks plus, minus the ten cents per litre.
chico1 1/20/2014 5:39:12 PM Report

Why would anybody in their right mind buy gas on this side of the border? It is already to high and a 10c/litre increase would be rediculous. Having said that, there are still too may people buying it on our side.

People say that we should buy Canadian. Why, they certainly don't care about us, raising prices almost daily. I say shop where you could get the best bang for your buck. Your family comes first and if you are spending that much more for gas, that takes away from the things that are important to your family, ie. FOOD.
HowAbooutSomeLogic 1/20/2014 5:43:15 PM Report

I understand that everyone wants the best price but find it hilarious that you guys can complain about a lack of jobs or job creation when you buy all your stuff from Walmart, China and the US.

It's great that we've got the option to just go across whenever we want but you've gotta feel for the millions of other Canadians that don't have that option and have nothing to gain from this. How is this even being considered? Why should anyone other than Torontonians be responsible for raising necessary funds? Or their corporations?

Pretty clear who runs the show...

and yet you guys think you can replace one scumbag gov't with another one and suddenly our community will be properly represented.

If this liberal government wouldn't wasted almost 2 billion dollars on absolutely foolish ventures , they would not have to raise the gas tax and raise the provincial part of the hst to raise extra money. I believe that a change in power has to happen during the next election . Obviously , the people running the provincial government in Ontario , are wasting money at an alarming rate because of the wrong people are in positions that they have no business being in . How could people waste 2 billion dollars of other people's money that was entrusted to them to use with restraint and with the wisdom to do the right thing the first time. Obviously , this government has spent our money without thought and with carelessness . These people should go to JAIL for misappropriating our money. THE TAXPAYERS MONEY!!

Reality check. Bob Rae = Social Contract / Mike Harris = Common Sense Revolution, Megacities & Megaboards /
Dalton McGuinty = Geen Energy at any cost...TO YOU. In retrospect, I think Bob wasn't all that bad, but I'm sure some would vehemently disagree. So folks, that covers the big three parties. Eventually, they all screw us because they don't have the moral compass to do what's right and trim the fat which simply keeps getting and thicker thicker.
thegarbage 1/21/2014 7:47:55 AM Report

Its simple. Legalize weed. You'll have all the money you need to build your subways
justsomeguy 1/21/2014 7:48:15 AM Report

If we were to follow the logic of 'let them raise their own money' then the north would be truly screwed. 95% of the tax base is in southern ontario. The north simply can't raise the money we need through taxation. All that funding we rely on such as the NOHC, etc including gov't funds for our hospital & roads, even EI is gained through taxation primary in the south. Most people don't know that in the south they pay way more transportation related costs, such as emissions testing (which we could use here, have you seen the clunkers on the roads?) and plate renewals cost double down there of what we pay here.

They just shot gas Ontario gas station owners in the foot with the HST gas increase... It’s already 40% cheaper to buy gas (mostly coming from Canada) in Michigan, now they want to increase taxes again?

And even if that subway gets built, that gas tax increase will not go away. No 'extra tax' ever has.

Our government has one policy for taxes.. Gouge to the extreme!
justsomeguy 1/21/2014 9:36:51 AM Report

@Kevin5069 - the government has a bad track record with not repealing taxes as promised. I.e. The 'temporary' income tax created in 1917.

Does anyone remember Bluebird Bakery? And do you remember that their bread sold up to 30 cents CHEAPER in Soo MI? They claimed subsidies offered made it cheaper for it to be sold over there. Really? And I have seen gas tankers go from independent gas stations on our side in the past over to Soo MI and fill up stations there. Same gas, more expensive here. And it's NOT all taxes either. If local stations can do a gas price war and drop prices 20-30 cents a litre and make profit then we NEED to question the prices charged. As for shopping CDN to support jobs, there is SOME merit in that. BUT gas stations hire, what 10 people max at minimum wage and mainly part time? Buying gas over in Michigan may sting here but not destroy the city. We already see huge numbers shopping in Soo MI and I am NOT seeing Walmart or Sears or any other larger retailer closing soon-well not closing for cross border shopping reasons. If someone could knock some sense into our Premier and have her do that tax increase in a REGIONAL area such as from Barrie to Niagra to Kingston to Windsor, then S. Ontario prices will be closer to ours and we may see increased tourism IF we can keep our local attractions opened and motel/hotel rates low.
S.M.A.R.T. 1/21/2014 12:37:34 PM Report

Dadal...If I lived in Windsor or Kingston I would not be impressed with your proposal. Those places have no more use for Toronto than we do, perhaps even less. For Windsor there is Detroit and for Kingston there is Ottawa. They're probably less Toronto oriented than we are, and I sure have no interest in paying for Toronto and Hamilton's transit system.

As for a tax base and surviving on our own, as a separate province, northern Ontario could do it. After all, NFLD and the Maritime provinces each have less area and people than we do, and they manage to survive. Last I heard, the province of Ontario receives Federal equalization payments making us a have-not province. With a well developed resource base and some creativity on our part, maybe, just maybe we could do better. As for paying less for license renewal, look at our highways. Here in the summer, they actually tar and gravel some of them rather than pave them. GRAVEL!!! I'd like to see them try that in southern Ontario!

My brother lives in Peterbourgh and the price of gas there is between 1.11 a liter.and a 1.17 a liter? and has been that way for over a few yrs now, my brother can't believe we pay such a high price for gas, My thoughts are the dealers here set there own prices gorging the public.
