Gray shows his 50 shades with robbery and drug possession (updated)

Thursday, January 16, 2014   by: Staff

8:45 a.m. update:

Gray Latvanen has been charged with three counts of possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to a prohibition order, one count of robbery using a firearm, one count of break and enter, one count of wear a disguise with intent, two counts of unauthorized possession of a weapon, one count of possession of controlled or substance for the purpose of trafficking and four counts of possession of controlled drug or substance.

The search warrant at the residence resulted in brass knuckles and a homemade double sided knife/sword weapon, both of which are prohibited weapons.

In addition 21 grams of cocaine, nine grams of marijuana, three grams of marijuana resin as well as codeine and ecstasy tablets were seized with an estimated street value of $2,385.

In the early morning hours of the 15th of January, 40-year-old Gray Latvanen of Foothill Road allegedly entered a residence on Connaught Avenue and robbed the resident of a large amount of cash, a Bulova watch and two gold rings.

While committing the robbery Latvanen is said to have been holding a firearm and wearing a disguise.

At the time of the offence Latvanen was on a mandatory weapon prohibition order.

He was arrested outside his residence at 5:41 p.m. without incident by members of the Emergency Services Unit and Investigative Services.

There were no injuries reported and this is not deemed to be a random act as the victim and accused are known to each other.

In the evening hours a search warrant was executed at the Latvanen residence which turned up two prohibited weapons and a quantity of drugs.

Mr. Latvanen will appear in bail court this morning facing eight Criminal Code charges and five charges under the Controlled Drug and Substance Act.

Here's a name that I've never read on Sootoday before! Not! I think this man really needs help and our system keeps putting him back on the street. Shake your heads at the courthouse. In and out of jail is not working for this guy!!!! Maybe he needs some real mental health help.

I hate our legal system!!!!!Needs a total over haul starting with the young offenders act. If they don't learn a lesson young, this is what the future holds.

fraulein in and out of jail doesn't for for anyone, as far as I can tell...

and it's probably not fair to blame the courthouse when we allowed things to get to where they are. We have for profit prisons and prison lobbyists jockeying for harsher mandatory sentences these days, even, for non violent crimes.

Collectively we all maintain the status quo - which is tragic since most realize it doesn't work - and fail to implement a system that may actually reduce recidivism rates, for example, adequate addiction treatment and mental health counselling, education/indoctrination programs or vocational training and, most importantly, a well thought out system of re entry back into the community after you've 'served your time'.
