Tractor trailer jack-knifed at 17/17B intersection (6 photos)

Wednesday, January 15, 2014   by: Staff

Sometime before 3:30 p.m. Wednesday a transport truck and trailer ended up jack-knifed in the snow drift-filled ditch at the Highway 17/17B intersection.

Electrical crews first appeared to work cutting power to the streetlamp, which was toppled by the rig.

Two heavy-duty tow trucks latched on to the cab and trailer to pull the transport and its load back on to the highway.

Police blocked traffic to and from the city, as well as traffic to Garden River First Nation, as the towing took place.

Multiple school busses, many filled with children, were left waiting in line with other commuters as the transport was pulled from the ditch.

There was no indication of what the transport was carrying, but none of the load appeared to be exposed during the initial collision or the recovery.

There didn't appear to be any injuries in the single-vehicle collision.

Finally I get to flog on this topic on the flog board!

First off I don't mean to get all in your face and all to the road /construction crews that do projects in and around the Sault area and I'm not a usually loud person in fact I normally don't give a bleep what goes on thanks however!

These road projects and particularly turning /merging lanes as of late are comical and deadly!

Take for instance the merge onto the 4-lane at Barr River Road, now c'mon I'll give credit that it is there after iinitially it was removed and an 8 foot hole dug and bermed so traffic one day was merging then the next a few cars flew into a gapping hole then hit a 12 foot Wall of rock and dirt! True story as a friend had been following an out of province couple and witnessed them crash into this fail scene. Albeit they had been using the GPS but that should not matter as I to was grinding to a halt and a tad angry when I came upon this on my commute home.
I noted this question to a Township official and later noticed that someone placed one of those blinking red hazard lights to the right of the road and for several days the tiny sad little light blinked ever so dimly on its 6volt battery.
The final accident was when a mid to late 70 years old woman ran into the trench,, airborne and hit the wall of dirt. She stated that just the other day she merged with ease at this spot and why would this be as if it were never here today? Instead you have to near stop turn left then stop and turn right while flooring your gas to get up to 55mph. Nice.

Regardless the merge is now back in place which leads to the next enexplained phenomenon. If you have ever merged into Hwy 17 East from the old 17 at Barr River, onto old 17 / Trunk Road from the new By-pass, made the curve heading West on the new bottom end of McNabb at the Shell tank farm. Actually let me stop at this beauty. Why is this curve /Island square as in a square corner? The Eastbound side is a curved corner and when you look at the West approach you will see black rubber strike marks where many drivers strike the overly high parking lot type straight up rim destroyer car lifting near roll over curb or entrance to the square Island corner son of a gun! Could we not of stood at the blueprint that morning and said, let's do one of those gradual roll up type islands with the gradient rumble strips to also alleviate a snow Plow operator from catapulting into the right lane beside him type of curbs. Does that not generate enough traffic accidents and insurance claims enough to put presents under the tree and hot beach trips to pompous lawyers and what nots no?

Moving on to the McNabb Black Road West to North on Black merge square corner deal which was altered after an avid road bicyclist heading North on Black with the right of flow had his last breath when he was crushed sandwiched from a merging vehicle taking the once hairpin merge that would fling you directly onto Black Road in 3 paces. This was no joke either, it was constructed new at that time and I had small kids in the car seat saying weeeeeeee everytime I turned it. My first use I rolled my eyes and muttered... The Soo. Regardless a life was peeled to the pavement, crews were back and behold a half fixed merge where you get flung to the side window on entrance to the merge then it calms down properly on a longer gradual proper easement to flow into traffic.

Now as the first initial poster says "why". I get that, I resolve that most locals don't think that an overhead sign stating Highway ends in a traditional Ontario Highway type way would answer why. Or that other signs stating Westbound Traffic MUST turn Right. My idea that an overhead sign stating Highway ends West Traffic must Turn Right is to me an answer but sadly costs money for a national Highway.

Oh and let's not forget to mention that wild right hand curve to merge with Old 17/Trunk Road... This merge is another winner, the type where you see better in a Coffee Drive Thru line. Yes Sir, this merge from a National Highway spins you right so fast that Transports are near millimeters from Thru traffic heading Westbound from Garden River old Hwy. 17 when vehicles merge. I've been pushed near into oncoming Eastbound traffic on a few occasions when a transport is merging and that trucker realizes holy smokes where's the merge gone! Yup some simple concrete barriers would fix that too easy to give drivers a parallel view of boundaries to follow in a crucial moment but that's just my flapping.

Excuse my grammar errors and typos etc. please, I'm writing this from a 3 inch phone with bad eyes thanks.
fatafr 1/15/2014 8:25:33 PM Report

Here we go again, another accident that may have been avoided if the By-pass at 2nd Line and Black Rd had finally been completed. Why don't the Liberal government and our native neighbours sit down and finally negotiate a deal to complete the By-pass. We've had traffic deaths on Hwy 17B like the one we had recently, serious accidents like this one at the intersection of 17 and 17B. Why can't these people finally sit down and negotiate. If their requests are reasonable, maybe a decision can be made sometime soon. Come on people, let's be cooperative neighbours and maybe more needless highway traffic tragedies can be avoided.

fatafr...its all about money. the LIBS have blown all the money. that plus the fact we are considered the far north by the Libs and won't see any monies for a long time to come. The natives always make absurd demands and who wants to sit down and negotiate with a bunch that has no intentions on reaching a settlement unless you give up all your freedoms and your first born child. They hold Ontario hostage. IMHO
hodedo68 1/15/2014 9:47:34 PM Report

OH and the government has never held the First Nations hostage? You better study our history!

macgyvr 1/15/2014 11:21:14 PM Report

That end of town is totally screwed to say the least. The highway should never have ended on Trunk Rd.. Should have gone all the way to Fith or Sixth Line. Yes the Natives wanted our FIRST BORN but give them the money and be done with it.As it is now we are no further ahead than we were five or six years ago through Garden River, and thiry five years ago between Laird and St. Joe Island. A FOUR LANE HIWAY LEADING NOWHERE. And this is the best deal our polititions at all levels could come up with. WHAT A JOKE.
Dave D.N.R. 1/16/2014 5:07:35 AM Report

@ hodedo68, I could not have said it better, you took everything out of my mouth about a lot of faults in this city involving our roads.

Only one thing I would say, sure the corner is not designed the best but to me it still looks like the transport was using a little too much speed. That I have found to be the case in many transports I have followed on that corner. (SPEED....slow down)

highway1 1/16/2014 7:19:30 AM Report

That intersection is not the greatest, but truck drivers need to slow down. Thousand of trucks go through there a month, one didn't make the corner, that driver needs to own it.
Batchewana will make a deal when the deal favors them.
Left Winger 1/16/2014 7:33:47 AM Report

Man it doesn't take long for this city's bigots to come out in force...

Everyone is talking out of the sides of their mouths.

Hey fatafr worry about your re-election and leave the real politics to those that know what they are doing.

Have you been at the negotiation table with the provincial govt. and Batchewana?

If not keep your comments to won't help you get elected.\

Oh wait in a city full of bigots perhaps it well
Left Winger 1/16/2014 7:53:09 AM Report

I personally think there were backroom deals going on at the time the bypass was being built and that is why there is no deal yet.

I imagine all of the businesses located along that stretch of from Black Road down were not happy with the idea...that would've meant a lost of business for them.

So, it's easier to blame the First Nation, as government knows how many bigots we have in the city and it would be an easy sell
highway1 1/16/2014 8:03:50 AM Report

True, LW, true.
Nunavut 1/16/2014 8:19:42 AM Report

I was in the lineup with the hundreds of cars backlogged both ways while tow trucks pulled this wingnut truck driver ,that did not read the signs and heed the speed. (he flew right thru the intersection straight into bush)

My problem is that the OPP allowed the tow trucks to do this job during the busiest traffic time when school buses, parents with kids, work commutters etc etc.
This job should of been delayed until after 7pm to tow him out. The truck was right off the road and no spillage.
But once again the OPP has little regard for the commuter traffic. meanwhile if this happened in Toronto the OPP would of keep the traffic moving as best they could.
Nats85 1/16/2014 9:07:52 AM Report

LOL it wasn't a "political road block" so we felt the same way about it as everyone else did. Also, there needs to be more signs apparently notifying drivers of the merging intersection there because this is probably the 3rd accident exactly like this one involving transports....OR the driver's need to be reassessed of their abilities to be operating these transports.
Also, it's always the same people on here commenting their small minded thoughts and opinions...don't you people have jobs or anything? Try contributing to society with a job instead of to sootoday with your "thoughts".
mattdoubleU 1/16/2014 9:24:47 AM Report

Well if your going to be rasict about your responses of course others will report it. Go stand in front of the saults welfare office and tell them to go get Jobs.

I'd have a job in town if the city bus even came to the bingo hall every 2 hours. But unfortunately it won't because people oppose it and rather have the bus to go a beach. That seems a lot more important to some. But yet they complain cause the natives have no jobs.
mattdoubleU 1/16/2014 10:30:12 AM Report

This is what im talking about, your ancestors didnt have bus service. They had snow shoes or canoes. Stop blaming others for your laziness.

Two votes for mattdoubleU!! Keep em coming.
SandyM 1/16/2014 10:46:41 AM Report

Actually.. I'm pretty sure this is the 5th roll at that exact spot, all transports..

They become velocitized coming in at 100 to 105 on the 4 lane and then zoom past the 90 --> 80 --> 60 signs and slow a bit, but certainly not enough to make that corner.

Great training area for us driving instructors.. When I come in there with my students, all whip past us as we go down to 60, not just transports. Then we watch the emergency braking when they can't make the corner at their 70 or so..

KIDDO 1/16/2014 11:58:45 AM Report

If you want to be able to fish and hunt every living animal to extinsion because it was agreed upon in 1900 then you should have to widdle a canoe out of a tree or walk with your snow shoes, not hunt and fish with your new 4 wheelers and power boats you bought tax free.
mattdoubleU 1/16/2014 12:08:58 PM Report

VaLx - EXACTLY MY POINT!!!!! Its 2014 not 1900, get over yourself and the stupid treaty that should have been abolished 50 yrs ago.

vaLx23 1/16/2014 12:23:07 PM Report

If I had a fourwheeler. Or a snow machine I'd have a job in town. Even a canoe oh trust me I would be doing things the old way. If the world comes to and end at least I know how to trap animals. Fish. Make fires And build canoes. Thank you ancestors for leaving me with the knowledge of knowing how to hunt and trap.

I applaud my ancestors for signing the treaties. If there were none. We wouldn't have ANYTHING to hunt or fish because greedy people would be taking our natural sources.

Nunavut 1/16/2014 1:09:09 PM Report

Okay calm down everybody.
Now as for any future city bus running through this intersection and down to the Bingo Hall in Garden River , it would be a great idea.........except that the City of the Sault has been burn't before by reserve not paying for fire service coverage a few years back, and so is probably hesitant to send bus down that way. Now add in that lately the idle no more point of view is that the reserve is a seperate nation, then you have the city sending a bus into another nation in theory. So Garden River has to recognize that there are other factor and maybe both parties need to be more friendly.
Even the OFSC (snow machine club) has not been allowed to run a snowmachine trail through reserve land. So you can see that the problem goes both ways and it is not always the Sault's fault.

Talking stupid and making comments all the time isn't going to help you out. No wonder why people leave the Sault! People there are embarrassing to society!
