$2,000 in fines for hunting on private land

Two Dubreuilville men were fined a total of $2,000 for an illegal deer hunt.

Luc Belanger and Daniel Levesque pleaded guilty and were fined $1,000 each for trespassing to hunt.

They are not allowed to hunt in Ontario for one year.

The court heard that on October 6, 2013, Ministry of Natural Resources conservation officers responded to a complaint that a deer was shot on a Bergland resident’s property without permission.

Upon investigation, officers discovered that Belanger and Levesque had a harvested deer at a nearby hunting camp.

The men admitted to shooting the deer on private property without consent.

The deer was seized and forfeited to the Crown.

Justice of the Peace Pat Clysdale-Cornell heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Rainy River, on January 9, 2014.

Hunters are reminded that it is illegal to hunt deer on private property without the permission of the landowner.

Permission must be obtained to enter private land even if the intent is to cross private land to reach public land.

For further information on hunting regulations, please consult the 2013-2014 Hunting Regulations Summary, available at ontario.ca/hunting.
