On the 27th of December 2013 in the early morning hours, the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service received a report of theft of an International flatbed truck and welder.

The vehicle was observed being driven through a facility gate on camera at Essar Steel towing a welder with the number 23 marked on the equipment.

On December 31 the truck and trailer were located but the welder still remains outstanding.

The welder is described as a Lincoln Electric Vantage 500 valued at $17,000.

Haha this is the 2nd theft for Essar in the last couple months. Think maybe it's an Essar employee leaving with equipment just because they can??
TotallyConfused 1/13/2014 4:13:46 PM Report

Sorry...
Theft FROM Essar.....
hank 1/13/2014 4:23:45 PM Report

You are confused if you see humour in this.......
TotallyConfused 1/13/2014 4:31:57 PM Report

I find it so pathetic that they can get out of Essar with someone else's equipment without being noticed that yes....it is funny!
la_kid555 1/13/2014 5:06:15 PM Report

It is certainly not funny...but it IS confusing that a large corporation with it's own in-house security and protocols could allow this to happen - much less multiple times....
bounder 1/13/2014 5:11:16 PM Report

Essar stealing from the employees is ok,they set the standard.
billeh 1/13/2014 5:30:15 PM Report

Are they sure it was not stolen while parked at mister transmission for the last 2 weeks ?
itsme29 1/13/2014 5:30:39 PM Report

probably just one of the local companies trying to get some of the money there owed by the thieves aka essar!
Stugatzu 1/13/2014 6:11:16 PM Report

You need a card to get out of the contractor's gate on Goulais Avenue, but the main gate at Patrick Street is a joke -- some, but not all security guards working that gate are too busy playing with their phones and their privates... rather than doing their job.

Its a joke... and I'm not surprised that things are getting stolen from Essar. I'm surprised that _more_ hasn't been stolen.

I could drive out of there with a CAT 992 loader... and as long as I look like I am supposed to be operating the machine... security is pretty damn oblivious.
bounder 1/13/2014 6:21:39 PM Report

Took a hot ingot home one day, told them to melt the parking lot, they bought it.
swirlbird20 1/13/2014 6:45:18 PM Report

The amount of vehicles coming in and out of all the gates is excessive. It would be basically impossible to search every vehicle entering and exiting. All contractors are required to punch in with a card they receive from ESSAR, but beyond having a person inspect and verify the thousands of vehicles that pass through daily its bound to happen. Dont forget, many of these same "security guards" are first response personnel who have saved lives, responded to accidents and helped out many plant employees and contractor companies alike from being severely hurt or killed.
itsme29 1/13/2014 7:11:25 PM Report

you don't have to searh the glovebox of a vehicle to find a 4000lb welding machine the security Is a joke...this is the 2nd vehicle and trailer that walked right out in less then 2 months...wake the hell up people
pastoutla 1/13/2014 7:25:00 PM Report

mmmm? orraziti $$ porco
Stugatzu 1/13/2014 7:32:43 PM Report

Lincolns are usually blue in colour, so if you happen to see one that has been repainted, or has decals/stickers removed/scratched off --- chances are..... lol

You don't have to search _every_ vehicle that leaves the gate, but stealing a flatbed truck and trailer with a welder on it -- you have to start asking questions about how they got onto the property in the first place. You can't just walk in off the street without swiping a card or signing in, without someone noticing you....normally.

My speculation would be that two people came in with one vehicle.... and two vehicles left.

Stugatzu 1/13/2014 7:38:05 PM Report

I see from the crime stoppers video that the welder displayed is grey -- I stand corrected, I believe I have myself confused with Millers being blue. LOL None the less, any Lincoln Vantage 500 welder that seems to have been freshly repainted, or seems to have stickers/decals scratched/removed off of it -- would be a likely suspect..
zr800 1/13/2014 7:58:08 PM Report

if essar only knew how much stuff out side contractor take from the mills that they are working in .welding cable air lines, torches, gas and oxygen lines that no one reports because no one cares .. every vehicles should be checked when they come in and then out.. most vehicles are 100lb heavier going out..maybe ESSAR should weigh them going in and out....
pastoutla 1/13/2014 8:03:11 PM Report

Most stuff stolen from ex.SMP was painted S.I.S. blue. GO FIGURE ? ? ?

HONEST1 1/13/2014 11:14:42 PM Report

Probably not theft at all. Could be a contractor took it after the crooks from India didn't pay there bill!!

Seems like a lot if stealing going in Essar and it starts the employees. It's called time theft, when you leave work early and still get paid for it! No wonder they can't pay there bills paying for people to be there, when they aren't!

sis uses any color paint they can steal...that's how they went from nothing too the full size raqueteers they are today...
The Driver 1/14/2014 9:43:37 AM Report

I deal with Vendors and contractors that do or have done business with Essar and from what I'm hearing it is extremely hard to get Essar to pay their bills. I would not be surprised to find that whomever took the welder was trying to get reimbursed for money owed to them that Essar never plans on paying.
