Ban restored on same-sex marriage in Utah

Monday, January 06, 2014   by: SooToday.com Staff
Marriage licenses for same-sex couples in Utah can no longer be issued, at least temporarily.

On January 6, 2014, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of the state's request to temporarily block enforcement of a recent ruling.

This ruling, passed on December 20, 2013, struck down a Utah law that banned same-sex marriage, deeming it unconstitutional.

Hundreds of marriage licenses for same-sex couples have been issued by Utah counties in the two weeks since the decision was announced.

Utah voters approved the law banning same-sex marriage in 2004.

The temporary block does not offer the final word on the constitutionality of the state law.

The larger issue will quickly be taken up by a Denver-based federal appeals court in the coming weeks.

Why is this in the local news section?

Don't read it then.

This issue should not have been decided by a vote.

Just be common law- stop the attention seeking.

Thanks for the smart ass answer tpot. Seriously, why is this local news?

@ Tag33&1/3rd:
Common law doesn't work in the USA (at least in most states) as it works in Canada. You don't get the same marriage benefits as if you were married even if you've lived together 50 years. Even inheriting is a real mess if your common-law spouse dies and didn't include you in the will.

@thera
Ahh---I did not know that. Thanks!

and society continues to move backward.....

Wow...didn't know wanting to marry the love of your life was "attention seeking." This is disgusting....I swear most of Sault Ste. Marie should move to Utah...we're just as behind in acceptance as this article shows they are!!!!!!!!!!
RobMel 1/6/2014 8:40:12 PM Report

I think attention seeking is an unfair assumption. Why am I allowed to marry the person I choose, but gay couples are not? Someone please explain how marrying someone of the same sex would effect our lives? Really and truley..... How does this effect total strangers? It is like we are reliving the black slavery issue all over again. This kind of behaviour will only be tolerated for so long before poop really hits the fan. To all the bigots and haters: Soon you will be the minority.... Jerks.

What's the big deal about men marrying men or women marrying women. It's none of my business but I would think it helps to stimulate the economy. More work for wedding planners; banquet halls; life insurance; health insurance. Also the Hallmark card company can sell more cards directed to congratulations to the groom and groom or bride and bride.
And don't forget lawyers...they'll have more work for separations and divorces. There's no end to the ways it will stimulate the economy. Why should the so called straight people have all the benefits?
sammygirl 1/6/2014 9:56:16 PM Report

My simple statement is the rights of the minority should be voted on by the majority
Dead End Kid 1/6/2014 10:49:11 PM Report

The constitution was put in place as a safe guard to protect minorities from the potential bias of the majority. An example would be the right wing christian movement who base many of their beliefs on quotes written in the bible.
Tag33&1/3rd 1/7/2014 4:30:47 AM Report

Ok allow it - but don't allow divorce.
And don't allow them to profit from news shows or magazines!
RobMel 1/7/2014 5:25:35 AM Report

tag: thats just like asking those parents to stop making a profit off selling their creepy model kids to television. Or that wenie from Duck Dynasty to share his bigot views on national television. Im willing to bet their profits sky rocketed after that display....

I have a great idea. How about you just mind your own business, stop allowing the personal choices of complete strangers rule your life. You will find that you will be a happier and calmer person if you let go of your hate.
