Two die in Espanola snowmobile collision

Fatal collision involving a snowmobile and pedestrian
 
ESPANOLA, ON - On December 27, 2013 at 8:15 p.m., officers from the Espanola Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a collision involving a motorized snow vehicle and a pedestrian on Lee Valley Road, Sables-Spanish Rivers Township.

Preliminary investigation revealed an eastbound motorized snow vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on the south shoulder of Lee Valley Road struck a male pedestrian who was also eastbound on the south shoulder of the road.

The 43-year-old male pedestrian, from Webbwood, ON, was pronounced dead at the scene. 

The 58-year-old male snowmobiler, from Massey, ON, was transported to Espanola General Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The investigation is continuing with the assistance of an OPP Collision Reconstructionist and an OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigator.

No names are being released at this time pending notification of next of kin.

Post mortems will be conducted in Sudbury on Monday, December 30th and Tuesday, December 31st, 2013.
