Tops 2013: Sault Dining glads and sads of 2013

Wednesday, December 25, 2013   by: SooToday.com Staff

As the population of Sault Ste. Marie seems to become more diverse, so too does the restaurant options available to the residents.

Former Sault residents who are back for the holidays may not be aware of some of the new culinary options available in our city.

Here are some of the recently-opened restaurants:

Although he had been serving Indian food at the North Husky since 2010, Khurshid Khan opened his own Tandoori Gardan restaurant this summer on Queen Street.

Thai food came to town last Summer when the Tan family (seen in photo above) opened Lychee Thai in the former Vincenzo’s location.

For those who want to save their left over turkey - Lychee Thai is open on Boxing Day.

A new take on a mobile classic rolled into town when the Gnarly Bistro gourmet food truck opened earlier this fall, it will return in the New Year and for Bon Soo.

Early in the year renovations began on the former Steamy Bean location on Great Northern Road, which was to become Bruno’s Breakfast and Waffle House.

Although a classic Sault Ste. Marie-style pizza slice is on the must-eat list of many visiting former residents, a new Little Caesars location has recently opened in the Churchill Plaza for those looking for something hot and ready.

Unfortunately we did lose some restaurants this year as well, here’s a few we will miss:

  • Frida’s Café, a popular lunch spot and coffee house on March Street, recently closed
  • Vincenzo’s across from the Essar Centre closed, many will miss their breakfast menu.
  • Panna Grill on Queen Street at March Street also closed earlier this year.
  • Burger King on Great Northern Road at McNabb Street closed for good.

Are there any more that you were happy to see open in 2013, or any that have closed you will miss?

Tell us below in the comments.

Never mind your frites bml69

What about the antipasto with those nice garlic bread sticks that I enjoyed at Vincenzo's with breakfast? I would order their fantastic breakfast as a guise to get the antipasto.

Please Vincenzo's retired people ... share the recipe with someone else. And thank you for many years.

Lychee Thai for those who haven't tried it, it is awesome. I've been a few times & definitely will keep going back. I personally enjoy Gliss, & Casa Mia as well. Hope our visitors find meals they enjoy. Merry Chrsitmas!

Franchise owner not willing to invest in new interior design required to maintain ownership. Would not have recouped as he was soon to retire. Nobody willing to take it on for price

BTW I have officially heard that a Pizza Hut is opening at the Old Burger King.
Sam C 12/26/2013 10:37:35 AM Report

Right Winger... thank you for a reasonable explanation. I've been hearing all sorts of fantastical speculation -- although today was the first I heard the "rats" fiction -- that has just left me shaking my head.

my fav pick is TANDOORI GARDAN AT 663 QUEEN, next to pita pit. I could eat there everyday. try the meat samosa or veggie samosas as appetizer and chicken dopayoza or chicken korma. FANTASTIC! MR. & MRS.Khan are wonderful people.
Working Man 12/28/2013 7:20:32 PM Report

I think it's great that BK closed down.
Those kids don't even know how to put a chicken sandwich together(eg. mayo on both buns, so it falls apart when you're eating it).

Mcdonalds should close too. I hate that place. The chicken mcgrill years ago was better than their new ones, the chicken was cooked properly and it had more meat in it. The angus burger also used to be bigger and had a better bun to go with it.

I think all fast food, burger and fry, restaurants should be illegal also. Where's the FDA???
