Tops 2013: Sault Dining glads and sads of 2013

As the population of Sault Ste. Marie seems to become more diverse, so too does the restaurant options available to the residents.

As the population of Sault Ste. Marie seems to become more diverse, so too does the restaurant options available to the residents.

Former Sault residents who are back for the holidays may not be aware of some of the new culinary options available in our city.

Here are some of the recently-opened restaurants:

Although he had been serving Indian food at the North Husky since 2010, Khurshid Khan opened his own Tandoori Gardan restaurant this summer on Queen Street.

Thai food came to town last Summer when the Tan family (seen in photo above) opened Lychee Thai in the former Vincenzo’s location.

For those who want to save their left over turkey - Lychee Thai is open on Boxing Day.

A new take on a mobile classic rolled into town when the Gnarly Bistro gourmet food truck opened earlier this fall, it will return in the New Year and for Bon Soo.

Early in the year renovations began on the former Steamy Bean location on Great Northern Road, which was to become Bruno’s Breakfast and Waffle House.

Although a classic Sault Ste. Marie-style pizza slice is on the must-eat list of many visiting former residents, a new Little Caesars location has recently opened in the Churchill Plaza for those looking for something hot and ready.

Unfortunately we did lose some restaurants this year as well, here’s a few we will miss:

  • Frida’s Café, a popular lunch spot and coffee house on March Street, recently closed
  • Vincenzo’s across from the Essar Centre closed, many will miss their breakfast menu.
  • Panna Grill on Queen Street at March Street also closed earlier this year.
  • Burger King on Great Northern Road at McNabb Street closed for good.

Are there any more that you were happy to see open in 2013, or any that have closed you will miss?

Tell us below in the comments.
