Thunderbirds sweep weekend series with Blind River

The Soo Thunderbirds head into the Christmas break with a weekend sweep of the Blind River Beavers.

The Thunderbirds won both ends of a home-and-home set with the Beavers in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action, beating the Beavers 4-3 in overtime on Friday night before picking up a 9-1 win on the road Saturday.

On Friday night at the Essar Centre, Dave Radke had the overtime winner to give the Thunderbirds the win. The Thunderbirds needed a third-period goal by Anthony Butorac to force overtime. Anthony Miller had a goal and three assists for the Thunderbirds in Friday’s win while Butorac and Brett Jeffries had a goal and an assist in the win. Trevor Simonick, Nick Trecroce and Luke MacDonald scored for Blind River in the loss. Beavers goaltender Dylan Knox stopped 37 shots.

On Saturday night, Darcy Haines scored three times to lead the Thunderbirds to the weekend sweep. Miller and Jaren Bellini chipped in with a goal and two assist each for the Thunderbirds. Nicolas Tassone added a goal and an assist for the Thunderbirds while Jeffries, Joey Miller and Eric Hilock also s cored for the Thunderbirds in the win.

Trecroce had the lone goal for Blind River in Saturday’s loss.

Saturday’s game was played at the Thessalon Community Centre due to work being done on the arena in Blind River.

The weekend wins improve the Thunderbirds league-leading record to 30-4-0-2. With 62 points, the Thunderbirds hold an eight-point lead over the second-place Kirkland Lake Gold Miners, who have four games in hand on the Thunderbirds heading into the Christmas break.

The Thunderbirds return to action on Jan. 3 when they begin a three-game road trip in Kirkland Lake against the Gold Miners. The trip also includes stops in Abitibi on Jan 4 and North Bay on Jan. 5.

Next home action for the Thunderbirds is Jan. 10 against Kirkland Lake.

Now that the eagles are gone there is no competition in this league. Maybe the t birds should join the ahl.
