In Northern Ontario they will close Hwy 17 for a entire day over a accident.
In Southern Ontario they can have a 5 car pile up on the 400,401 or QEW and have it cleared in less then a hour.

are you 4 real 400 series hwys at least 4 to 8 lane 17 2 LANES DUH
steve53000 12/21/2013 10:58:47 AM Report

Sorry didn't mean to be rude but I commuted daily down south on the 400 series hwys for years and they are not as glorious as you may believe . I hope that the highways here and there are closed to prevent any injuries to anyone involved or bystanders for as long as it takes . We all hate waiting but sometimes it is for the best.
PeacePiper 12/21/2013 11:01:42 AM Report

Duh? Steve53000, does Stupid come natural to you?
crashed13 12/21/2013 11:30:38 AM Report

Who has not driven the 400s more then they cared to?
Just saying up here is a much longer investigation process, its not shut down because it takes a day to tow the wreak out of the way.

Down south its about towing the wrecks out of the way and getting the show back on the road as quick as possible.

Just always wondered why their was two standards of doing things.
JDW 12/21/2013 11:33:09 AM Report

I was told that "they" close the highways
after an accident because of something to do with the insurance companies. Don't we spend enough time (and money) as it is with Insurance Companies in Ontario?
Sheesh!
Auntiej 12/21/2013 11:35:09 AM Report

It is closed because the tractor trailer IS ON FIRE!!!!!!!

Auntiej

Thanks for the chuckle
crashed13 12/21/2013 12:02:46 PM Report

@ Auntiej

Not talking about this accentent in general, I seen 17 closed for hours over a car sliding into a ditch.

They would tow that tuck out of the way as it's still burning if it was down south.

One lane is open. Alternating traffic
steve53000 12/21/2013 12:42:34 PM Report

KTL 12/21/2013 1:01:45 PM Report

We went by at 10am and the opp just started directing traffic (one officer) and the truck was already out no fire trucks around. And the driver jumped into another mckevvit? Transport and was laughing. So I'm not sure why it would be closed now.
Berian 12/21/2013 1:03:42 PM Report

Hwy is opened now.
H.E.T. 12/21/2013 4:00:50 PM Report

Just something to think about. If it is a fatal accident, in southern Ont a coroner is less than 1/2 an hour away, here the coroner has to travel to the accident from the Soo or Sudbury to pronounce the victim dead BEFORE the wreck can be cleared and the hiway reopened. I have had the not nice job of guarding the scene waiting for the coroner. there is a lot of reasons for the closures, and if it was your family member you would not care how long it is closed to do a proper investigation.
muf 12/21/2013 4:20:09 PM Report

Good Call H.E.T. Not alot of traffic accident specialists in the north . Well unless you count all the ones on here. What I mean is with the OPP. Sometimes they have to called in from who knows where as well.
Timbob 12/21/2013 9:38:23 PM Report

@HET

"...here the coroner has to travel to the accident from the Soo or Sudbury to pronounce the victim dead BEFORE the wreck can be cleared and the hiway reopened."

Well, frankly that is just plain STUPID. Change the policy.

Help the injured people, take some photos (10 minutes, not 8 hours), then immediately clear one lane and get traffic moving. Period. It's so simple a monkey could do it. But not the OPP...

"... if it was your family member you would not care how long it is closed to do a proper investigation."

No, that's not true. That would be almost as stupid.
PeacePiper 12/21/2013 10:59:16 PM Report

Ok. Such is life. Have a good night and hope you have a happy Holiday Season. Cheers.
H.E.T. 12/22/2013 12:13:29 AM Report

timbob

i hope thats what they do with you. take a pic, drag your carcass to the ditch and get the traffic to walmart on time.
muf 12/22/2013 9:23:26 AM Report

LOL...... H.E.T.
Timbob 12/22/2013 7:47:26 PM Report

@HET

Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn. LMAO.
