Road construction season to end Friday, Winter to start Saturday

Thursday, December 19, 2013   by: SooToday.com Staff

It is often said that there are only two seasons in Ontario, road construction and winter.

The following press release by the city seems to add credability to that saying, as road construction on Queen Street West ends one day before the start of winter:

NEWS RELEASE

CITY OF SAULT STE. MARIE

*************************
SAULT STE. MARIE - The City of Sault Ste. Marie would like to advise the public that Queen Street West from Andrew Street to John Street will reopen to traffic by 5 p.m., Friday, December 20, 2013.

Please be aware that there may be construction activity continuing on Queen Street West next week requiring periodic lane closures; however, the road will remain open.

Residents are reminded to treat work zones with caution and obey all signage.

The City would like to thank the public for their patience and cooperation during the road closure period for this important City project.

Hopefully the City is collecting penalty money from them. The longest six week closure ever.
damzull1 12/19/2013 7:24:33 PM Report

flyhawk25 12/19/2013 7:49:34 PM Report

Just another messed up job that we continue to endure.
Amazing.
Wicket 12/19/2013 7:59:52 PM Report

Bitch, bitch, bitch, really, do any of you know about unexpected complications, changes to the original work order, horrible weather with rain playing havoc and destroying work already done. Thank goodness I don't walk in your perfect shoes, just sick and tired of the perfectionists that post on SooToday.
thera 12/19/2013 8:07:56 PM Report

@ wicket:

"sick and tired of the perfectionists"

Are you kidding me? Since when have we ever have (or expected) perfection from road construction crews?? How about one time where they finish on time. Can you think of a major road construction to be on time in the last 10 years?
Wicket 12/19/2013 8:50:41 PM Report

Not many large projects finish on time and on budget. We are not the only city to experience this, North Bay is going through the same thing right now also.
Essar Steel (when it was Algoma Steel) hardly ever finished a major job on time or within budget.
The unexpected is never factored into a cost factor and a small contingency is allowed for going over the deadline.
I would have to assume that it is the same with most jobs. Have you had to depend on the local trades to finish something, let alone show up, on time in your own house.
flyhawk25 12/19/2013 8:51:37 PM Report

Wicket...'Oops sorry' doesn't work in the airline industry or operating rooms. To name just a few.
Why should these guys be any different?
mallet 12/19/2013 8:59:22 PM Report

Oh Come on Wicket, the only reason these companies get the contract is either price or time, and then they build into the price the extra time it will take to complete the job. There are not enough jobs in the city, that the city engineers cannot spare half a day at each to check that the work is being done. I well remember the two bridges on 17North being done both at the same time and going past fairly regulary and seeing maybe two guys watering the cement, and very little else being done. Then the Goulais river bridge being painted, took about 3 months to sandblast and repaint and there was an MOE and MTO trucks there everytime I went past, and I do not think that was the only job they had that year.
leafs19blue 12/19/2013 9:07:26 PM Report

did any of you guys look outside this summer and see the rain storms that this city had. also you probably don't realize that 75% of this city storm sewers run into that aquaduct. Not to mention that the fort creek conservation takes a long time to drain through that same aquaduct.
Retreaded 12/19/2013 9:12:59 PM Report

Any bets on how long it will until 4th line is re-opened??
Right Winger 12/19/2013 9:13:45 PM Report

Wicket,

Queen in front of Casino was supposed to be done by the middle of July. Not sure if it is unrealistic to complain after 5 months being late
Sam C 12/19/2013 9:16:22 PM Report

Well said, leafs19... That aquaduct IS Fort Creek. There was a tremendous amount of rainfall on several occasions, which caused a great deal of disruption.
leafs19blue 12/19/2013 9:17:37 PM Report

Hey Right Winger Queen is actually behind the casino. I don't know about you but I have never seen an entrance on Queen.
6 fan 12/19/2013 9:20:37 PM Report

Let's complain about the taste of the water seen as your all a bunch of whiners
skitch123 12/19/2013 9:33:39 PM Report

don,t stop them they are just getting started.
macgyvr 12/19/2013 9:38:33 PM Report

We never had three months of rain. Both contractors are milking it and it seems no one at City Hall is overly concerned until a week or two before the end of the season, then they all rush and we end up with crappy wormanship that we have been used to getting. THen in the spring it all falls apart and blame it on the winters so it gets patched up.AND THE CYCLE CONTINUES!!!!!!!! SOMEONE SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE.
NB113 12/19/2013 9:42:16 PM Report

Hey leafs19blue, there is an entrance to the Casino lot on Queen. I used to go in that way all the time.
leafs19blue 12/19/2013 9:44:44 PM Report

Hey macgyvr the water that runs through after a flood or rain fall doesn't just evaporate overnight. You ever pour concrete in water? Really people it is Christmas time and you have nothing better to do then bitch and complain about stuff you don't have the slightest clue about. WOW.
macgyvr 12/19/2013 9:57:35 PM Report

{1}THERE ARE SUCH THINGS C A L L E D PUMPS AND THAT IS WHAT THEY HAVE BEE USING BY THE CASINO. {2} THER IS A DAM TO HOLD WATER THAT FEEDS THAT AQUADUCT ON THE NORTH SIDE OF SECOND LINE.
leafs19blue 12/19/2013 10:05:26 PM Report

there is not enough pumps in Ontario to control mother nature and if they would have shut the gate at fort creek the water would have just come over second line and created a big mess but I guess you really know what you are talking about macgyvr
macgyvr 12/19/2013 10:12:53 PM Report

THEY DON'T SHUT THE GATES THEY CONTROL THE FLOW.
leafs19blue 12/19/2013 10:19:48 PM Report

yes and when fort creek has 20 feet of water built up it doesn't matter if it is only open a couple of inches by the time the water gets to the casino it is flowing to fast to control with pumps like I said YOU CANNOT CONTROL MOTHER NATURE water moves mountains it is gonna move a few pumps and sand bags
JustMe1234567 12/19/2013 10:45:45 PM Report

Oh Soo how I luv you.

But ya, that roadwork did seem super extra long to complete.
Wisenheimer 12/19/2013 10:55:00 PM Report

City needs to stop taking the lowest bid on jobs if they want work done on schedule.
Also contractors twiddle their thumbs while the city's engineering dept. takes it's sweet time getting specs and drawings out every Spring.
bradl 12/19/2013 11:05:03 PM Report

If a business says the can get a job done by a specific date, and the don't. They should be penalized for every day.If they finish early give bonus. The city should put this right in the contract. Then watch how fast these jobs are completed.
jamt22 12/20/2013 12:11:16 AM Report

WELL MAYBE WITH ALL THE ROAD WORK THEY ATTEMPTED TO DO, AND MOST LIKELY WILL HAVE TO REPEAT NEXT YEAR AS THEY ALWAYS DO, JUST MAYBE NOW WHOM EVER IS SUPPOSED TO CLEAR HIGHWAY 17 NORTH CAN GET AT IT..THIS HIGHWAY IS THE WORST I HAVE SEEN...
Retreaded 12/20/2013 6:29:54 AM Report

I saw them pouring concrete sidewalks neat Queen and Pine...did not know you could do that in cold weather.
Big Deal 12/20/2013 7:59:49 AM Report

What a joke!!!! I could see if these extended deadlines happened once in a while, but come on...every job done every summer lasts for the entire summer. These local construction companies should take some pointers from the construction companies from Toronto....they would of done an amazing job and it wouldn't of taken them no 5 months to complete the job...try more like 2 weeks!!!

Instead of slamming the Contractors, who obviously have a part in not finishing in time. Why not Blame City Engineers and Contracted Engineers for putting out the jobs half way through the construction season. At least give the local contractors a fightin chance?
crashed13 12/20/2013 8:31:17 AM Report

Really no ones knows the inside stories.
They made a 6 week time line but who's to tell if much more additional work was added on later on.

Would not be the first time something was ripped into and started and they find much more wrong then expected.
daddy frank 12/20/2013 9:46:57 AM Report

It seems it is the same two contractors that are late ALWAYS. why do does the city keep giving them contracts, (are they being bought off) these two should not be aloud to bid on city work. as far as time frames to get the job done, maybe the genius's in the engineering dept are putting unrealistic time frames on the jobs. they seem to have to bring in consultants for everything they do this is another area they should get help
whatstheproblemhere 12/20/2013 10:12:24 AM Report

I could see a 6-week project turning into 12 if something really bad happened but come on now... how did it get to be HALF A YEAR? It didn't rain that much.

I'm not blaming anyone (yet)... I'd just like to know what happened and why was it never communicated to the public.
