Don't be Idle

Wednesday, December 18, 2013   by: Staff

SAULT STE. MARIE - Idle Free Sault Ste. Marie presented project results during the Royal Society’s ‘Radical Emissions Reduction Conference’ in London, England, this past week.

The conference, organised by the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research and hosted at the Royal Society, considered how to deliver reductions in energy consumption of at least 8% per year (~60% across a decade).

The conference keynote address was given by Naomi Klein.

The Conference encouraged both carbon offsetting and sustainable mobility choices for attending delegates and remote participation for international delegates in order to reduce carbon and materialfootprintsofparticipants.

By participating remotely and electronically delivering the presentation, Idle Free Sault Ste. Marie avoided over 3.15 tonnes of CO2 equivalent while still delivering an important message to key decision makers and researchers, learning from the experiences and research of scientists, policy- and decision-makers and activists, and participating in a very engaging inaugural conference.

Idle Free Sault Ste. Marie is a project that encourages the reduction of wasteful idling in Sault Ste. Marie, and provides education and raises awareness on the benefits of reduced idling.

Watch for the contest coming in 2014 for local elementary and secondary school students.

The contest will challenge students to prepare a video that considers the impacts of rising greenhouse gas emissions and identifies ways people can reduce emissions in the transportation sector by raising awareness about unnecessary idling.

Idle Free Sault Ste. Marie would like to take this opportunity to remind all Sault residents and businesses to eliminate wasteful idling, drive your vehicle to warm it up, and if necessary, use the block heater on those extra cold mornings.

For more information, see

Quick facts:

  • idling for 5 minutes increases total fuel consumption by 14%; 10 minutes of wasteful idling raises that to 19%
  • 21,000 people die prematurely each year in Canada due to air pollution
  • climate changes will cause $8 billion in flood damages and $17 billion of losses in the forestry sector annually within the current generations’ lifetime
  • Canadians waste over 2,500,000 (2.5 million!) litres of fuel each day needlessly idling
  • wasteful idling from Canadians produces 5,000,000 (5 million!) kilograms of greenhouse gases each day
  • colder winter temperatures in Canada are predicted due to climate changes
  • flooding in Northern Ontario will become more pronounced due to anthropogenic climate changes

I agree...idling is a waste, but you have to run your vehicle for at least a couple minutes in this climate before driving it. How many tonnes of CO2 does it take to build me a new vehicle when I destroy mine by driving it ice cold? There should definitely be a law in place though that limits remote starters to a 5 minute idle. Any more is wasteful.

What happened to their global warming theory? First everything was getting warmer. Now things are getting colder. They draw their own conclusions depending on what they are trying to prove.
Sam C 12/18/2013 10:11:27 AM Report

The problem is that the moniker "global warming" was inappropriately applied to the situation. While the Earth's overall mean temperature IS increasing, CLIMATE CHANGE is the more appropriate term.

As well, a warmer overall climate does mean more snow and colder temperatures in the winter, at least until there is no more "winter".

And, newer vehicles do not need an extensive warm-up period.

Be honest, you're warming up your can for your own comfort. The fact is that very few of us have to drive more than 10-15 minutes to get to work.

In the three days following June 15th. 1991, Mount Pinatubo. on the island of Lauzon, ejected more CO2 into the atmosphere than has been created, ever, by industrial Mankind. Global temps dropped by 0.5 Deg C. but rapidly recovered as the Earth's massive compensation system kicked in. A system way too big and complex for our stupid little human minds to fully understand.

If you drink the climate change Kool Aid, you deserve the ridicule that will be heaped upon you when this attempt at global taxation/extortion is finally exposed.

The very existence of this "religion" and the way people like Gore and Suzuki have been so easily able to spin it, is a sorry statement about the decline of education standards today.

However, saving fuel to save money is still a good idea, if don't mind freezing your butt in the winter.

Isn't it funny that the same people that state we should make sure all our windows are clear ....are the ones here stating we should not need more than five minutes to warm up our cars.
Well five minutes is not enough on a typical cold morning to defrost the inside of most cars especially if you have a rinky dink four cyclinder that does not heat up very quickly . So any clowns that think they should tell us how long we should warm up our cars, can also take on the responsiblity when our windows are not defrosted and we get in accidents because of some enviro wackos ideas they get from left wing social engineers that jumped on board the exaggerated Gore and Suzuki myths.

Canada 91% of what it was when the Europeans got here.

Those figures are from the FORESTRY industry.

You (or should I say Rush) carefully use the word 'sustainable'.... those are easily harvestable forests, not forests as a whole.
AnOMALOUS 12/19/2013 8:39:19 AM Report

start replacing traffic stops with roundabouts. roundabouts offer so many benefits. there is lots of data online to show that they
- lead to less fuel being consumed since less wasteful idle.
- are safer (fewer and less severe collisions)
- are cheaper to operate long term
- reduce delays and improve flow in traffic
- etc.

here's an FAQ on roundabouts prepared by the MTO. i feel it would answer most questions people would have about them
R0FL0L 12/19/2013 10:01:06 AM Report

I agree with the roundabouts. It makes traffic flow so much better. But in the Sault? The first few years we have to stay off the roadway to stay safe. ;)
But even with the roundabouts we need to get those ignorant drivers that leave the cars running for the comfort. The cars don't just idle in the morning, people go into a store and the cars are running. Over 40 years driving in COLD Canada and never needed to idle the car to free the windshield. You have to make sure you don't leave too much moisture in the car when you get out in the evening. And stop huffing and puffing when you first get in. ohhh :) can't wait for all those nay sayers to burst with rage.
The wait time and idling on the bridge or in the drive thru is another subject and should be limited, if not stopped.
Without Suzuki you would not even know there was acid rain or clear cutting here in Canada. Yupp, the earth is flat.
