OLG Casino workers vote to unionize

NEWS RELEASE

UNITED STEELWORKERS
*************************
SAULT STE. MARIE - Employees at the OLG Casino Sault Ste. Marie, which may soon be privatized by the Ontario government, have voted to join the United Steelworkers (USW) union.

This follows on the heels of Thunder Bay’s OLG Casino employees voting in favour of joining the Steelworkers.

In a vote supervised by the Ontario Labour Relations Board, the casino employees voted 70% in favour of joining the USW.

The USW now represents 167 employees at the Sault Ste. Marie casino.

“The United Steelworkers are pleased to welcome the 167 employees of the Sault Ste. Marie OLG Casino,” said Marty Warren, the USW’s Ontario Director.

“The employees were concerned about their job security, pension and benefits due to possible privatization of Ontario’s casinos. By joining a union, the employees’ rights and interest will be better protected,” Warren said. “We congratulate the Sault Ste. Marie casino employees for deciding to stand up for their collective interests.”

In recent months, Sault Ste. Marie casino employees were told by their employer there were few guarantees regarding their future employment and working conditions.

“By joining the Steelworkers, the Sault Ste. Marie casino employees will now have ‘successor rights’ if the facility is privatized in the future,” stated Warren.

“It’s now incumbent on the OLG to recognize its obligation to negotiate a fair collective agreement with its employees.”

“The USW expects the OLG (Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation) to begin the process of negotiating a collective agreement as soon as possible,” Warren added.

Way to go OLG Casino employees time to put governments in their place, especially the PC's who are the big business party, time to share the wealth with your employees OLG

Couldn't agree more! It's time for unions to make a strong come back! It is because of unions that we have the middle class as we do. Just look at the United States, they've decreased unions to about only 9% of the working force and they have almost no middle class left.

Being in a union doesn't guarantee a damn thing these days. Look at whats happened during the last two months in Ontario alone re: Kellogg's, Novartis, Heinz etc...

If a corporation wants to cut jobs, they will find a way.

Having worked jobs in my life with both (a union and without) the only problem I see with unions is they have to protect the bad workers too, and sometimes those workers don't deserve their job or the union backing, but will get it anyway.

And I also agree with Alexwhy, and I think sometimes unions drive up the wages and benefits so high the company has to start cutting at some point.

Just thinking out loud.

Hopefully the OLG employees at the Foster Drive location can also take a positive step in securing a voice in their future, whichever path it takes, by voting for PSAC to represent their best interests.

LOL they were sharing ...the workers had an income didn't they.

be clear, a union does not guarantee a job. If OLG foster chooses to unionize there is nothing to prevent all new hires from being in Toronto slowly eroding what is in SSM. Be clear the new proposed deal with the private sector specifies that an employee is guaranteed 12 months employment with the new company. Not many companies would consider their workers like this, I am impressed being from a union company, they do think of the worker. If they cannot prove themselves after a year then perhaps those employees should not be at the company. A private company can also choose to move their operations to another location which a union cannot stop so if they unionize BE CAREFUL they may be voting themselves out of a job. It is a business environment which can run ANYWHERE in Ontario, it is not dependant on the Soo as a geographic requirement. So the simple thing for a private company to do is give the local worker 12 months and then move to another city like Ottawa and if their big about it they can offer the employees jobs if they want to MOVE!

Only the Government can not make a profit with a casino.

Testing:
Granted a union will not guarantee a job, nothing does. However it does give the employees a voice which over the past few years they did not have or even at times when they were asked for input it was mostly disgarded or fell on deaf ears.
deni 12/15/2013 2:02:57 PM Report

That is BS because security and other department are can't be under the same union agreement...

More union members....just means in a few years they will cry about not making as much as they want.....go on strike and complain about it all while putting customers on the back burner.
