Wednesday, December 11, 2013   by: SooToday.com Staff

NEWS RELEASE

U.S. NATIONAL
COAST GUARD

***************************
Coast Guard ice breaking activities

Ice is forming in the St Marys River; U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Biscayne Bay will conduct ice breaking operations to facilitate the movement of commercial shipping throughout the river.

Additional Cutters will assist throughout the river as needed.

This activity will extend to the end of the shipping season which normally concludes 16 January.

All snowmobile, all terrain vehicle (ATV) operators, and other recreational users of the ice should avoid shipping channels, plan their activity carefully, and use caution near the ice.

Ice fishermen, especially, should use caution when placing their ice shacks in proximity to the shipping channels.

Further inquiries may be made by phone to Sault Vessel Traffic Service at (906) 635-3232 or via email at SOOTFC@USCG.MIL

Ice Fishermen and snowmobilers please also remind yourselves that the ice is not yet thick enough to venture out on.

I never knew the ice on the St. Mary's river ever gets safe or people even ice fish on it.

When you see that ice breaker coming towards your ice hole it's time to pull up the lines and change spots.
