Gameday Preview: Greyhounds travel to Sudbury for makeup game

Tuesday, December 10, 2013   by: Brad Coccimiglio

The Soo Greyhounds and Sudbury Wolves will finally get to play their season opener.

The two teams were scheduled to open the Ontario Hockey League season in Sudbury on Sept. 20 but the game was eventually postponed due to heavy fog in Sudbury Arena. The game was eventually re-scheduled for Tuesday night in Sudbury.

The two teams have met twice since the original postponement, both in Sault Ste. Marie at the Essar Centre.

The two clubs met on Sept. 21 with the Greyhounds coming away with a 10-3 win. Jared McCann scored four times in the win while Sergey Tolchinsky had a goal and three assists for the Greyhounds.

The second meeting between the two clubs was Nov. 27 as the Wolves picked up a 3-2 shootout win over the Greyhounds. Connor Crisp had the shootout winner for the Wolves. Andrew Fritsch had a goal and an assist for the Greyhounds in the loss.

The Greyhounds are coming off a three-game road trip over the weekend that saw them pick up wins in Plymouth on Friday and Saginaw on Saturday. The wins came after the Greyhounds opened the road trip last Wednesday night in London with a 3-2 loss.

Greyhounds scoring leader Sergey Tolchinsky had points in nine-straight games, including six points on the road trip. Tolchinsky has 15 points in that nine-game span. The Russian-born forward hit a milestone on Saturday night, picking up career point number 100. Tolchinsky also sits six goals away from 50 in his OHL career. With his next point, Tolchinsky will also set a new career high in points with 52 points.

The two teams enter Tuesday night leading their respective divisions. With a 21-6-0-3 record and 45 points, the Greyhounds are tops in the OHL’s West Division and hold a six-point lead over the second-place Windsor Spitfires.

The Wolves, with a 15-9-3-3 record and 36 points, are one point ahead of the North Bay Battalion in the Central Division.
