HSCDSB hosts noted psychologist

SAULT STE. MARIE - The Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board (HSCDSB) will be hosting a number of workshops featuring a leader in the field of adolescent psychology later this month.

Dr. Adèle Lafrance Robinson will be the lead presenter at a three-day conference devoted to Emotion Focused Family Therapy (EFFT).

Dr. Lafrance Robinson, a clinical psychologist and researcher, is also an Assistant Professor in the Psychology Department at Laurentian University and is on staff at Sudbury Regional Hospital.

Dr. Lafrance Robinson is also the author of several publications in the field of child and adolescent mental health.

"The Board continues its efforts in the area of student well-being, with a particular emphasis placed upon mental health. Dr. LaFrance Robinson's expertise in this area fits in nicely with our ongoing focus," said HSCDSB Mental Health Lead, Kerri Dool.

"We have developed a Mental Health Strategic Plan that aligns with our larger Board plan. As part of this, it is imperative that adults in the education sector, at home in care-giving roles and in the larger community become equipped with the necessary skill set to address the emotional needs of our children and youth," added Dool.

Dr. Lafrance Robinson will be presenting details of Emotion Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) for clinicians at various local agencies who work with families and individuals.

EFFT provides a family-based framework through which to understand mental health and illness, with a focus on emotional avoidance as an intergenerational risk factor.

As part of her visit to Sault Ste. Marie, Dr. Lafrance Robinson will be the keynote speaker at two free evening workshops that will deal with supporting the emotional development of children and teens.

The first workshop, for all parents and caregivers in Sault Ste. Marie and area, will be held on Monday, December 16 at the Mount St. Joseph Centre gymnasium from 6 until 8:30 p.m.

The second workshop, open to school personnel in all school boards, will take place on Tuesday, December 17 at the Mount St. Joseph Centre gymnasium from 6 until 8:30 p.m.

If you are interested in attending one of the workshops, please call 705-945-6269 or email [email protected] by Wednesday, December 11.
