Chair Jennifer Sarlo

Jennifer Sarlo was first elected as a Trustee for the Algoma District School Board in 2006 serving Ward One, Sault Ste. Marie.  In 2009, Jennifer became Vice Chair of the Board and in December 2011, she was elected as Chair.

She has served as an alternate member of the Ontario Public School Board Association’s (OPSBA’s) Policy Committee.

In her years with the board, Jennifer has also taken an active role in the School Effectiveness Visits and has been on the New Schools Steering Committee.

She has been a member of the Finance and Operations Committee, the Discipline Committee and the External Audit Committee.

Prior to being elected to the Algoma District School Board, Jennifer was the Chair of ADSB’s School Council Coordinating Committee (SCCC) now known as the Parent Involvement Committee (PIC).

She was also the Chair of Grand View Public School’s School Council.

She has always been very supportive and involved in the elementary and high schools her children attended (Grand View, Korah and White Pines).

Jennifer is also an involved and respected member of her community and her church.

Jennifer addressed the board following her acclimation:

“We have spent the last year creating and honing our new mission, vision and strategic priorities and we are excited to roll that out. We have consulted with our administration, staff and stake holders and are truly bursting with anticipation as we plan to present it to our communities early in the new year. This dynamic multi-year strategic plan will guide our direction in the next three to five years.

I count it a privilege to serve with such a great team of passionate, dedicated individuals from our trustees, our administration team, our principals, teachers and all our support staff. I look forward to leading our board through the coming year.”

Algoma District School Board approves 2012/2013 financial statement

Audit Committee Chair Graham Lidstone and Superintendent of Business Joe Santa Maria updated the Board on the 2012 / 2013 Financial Statement audit that was completed by auditors KPMG LLP, Chartered Accountants.

The Board’s Trustee Audit Committee members and financial staff were on hand to outline highlights and to respond to Trustees’ questions.

Committee members consist of Trustee members Graham Lidstone (chair of the Audit Committee), Susan Thayer and Gladys Wiggins (vice-chair of the Board).

Non-trustee members of the Committee are Kim Sacchetta and Steve Nott.

Ex-officio members are Board Chair Jennifer Sarlo and Director of Education Lucia

During 2012-13, the Board has experienced a surplus added to working funds of $1,061,064.

The Board has also set aside $2,804,115 in reserves to offset future commitments.

In addition, $700,767 was reduced from Capital Reserves to match 2012-13 Capital Expenditures.

The Board is pleased that increased enrolment and some greater than expected savings have resulted in improved financial results which allow for the flexibility to continue to improve programming for full-day Junior Kindergarten, increased access to technology and also for Capital needs to improve school learning environments for students.

Following a question and answer session, the Board received the audited financial statements for the year ended August 31, 2013.

The Financial Statements will be made available on the Board’s website at www.adsb.on.ca.
