Second annual Twin Saults Regional Collaboration Conference focuses in bi-national efforts in natural resources, transportation and economic development
MARQUETTE, MI - The Upper Peninsula Economic Development Alliance (UPEDA), in partnership with the sister cities of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, USA and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada, will host the 2nd Annual Twin Saults Regional Collaboration Conference on October 30 and October 31, 2013 at Lake Superior State University.
“Bi-national regional cooperation and collaboration are becoming more and important to successful economic development,” stated Kim Stoker, executive director of UPEDA. “Our conference will highlight economic areas that have high potential for enhanced bi-national collaboration and future initiatives.”
The event kicks off Wednesday afternoon, October 30 with an opening discussion on the importance of tourism at the local, state and provincial level.
Keynote speakers Todd Ambs, Healing Our Waters; Dr. Steven Kesler, University of Michigan, Earth and Environmental Sciences will highlight the event on Thursday, October 31.
The welcome for the day will be delivered by Kim Stoker, president of the Upper Peninsula Economic Development Alliance, and also feature remarks from the U.S. Economic Development Administration, and the Sault Michigan and Sault Ontario EDC’s.
Representatives from the US Customs and Border Protection and Canada Border Services Agency will give a presentation on the Current State of U.S.-Canada Border Crossings in the Twin Saults Wednesday afternoon.
Experts in transportation, featuring Pasi Lautala from Michigan Tech, AnnMarie Schnieder from the Great Lakes International Trade and Transportation Hub (GLITTH), and Caroline de Groot from the Ontario Ministry of Transportation will discuss strategic initiatives in the Twin Saults bi-national transportation corridor.
The 2nd annual event will also feature the popular business roundtable discussion, featuring representatives from Northern Wings Repair, L’Anse Manufacturing, BlueForest Development/Rivers Edge Development, and Superior Fabrication who will discuss exporting experiences, collaborative relationships they have developed to penetrate foreign markets, and the power of problem-solving relationships.
The panel will also discuss the roles of various entities play in the exporting process – including universities, businesses, economic development organizations, and finally where they anticipate exporting opportunities over a two year trajectory.
The event will conclude with a session on the value of trails and natural resources in the UP, Ontario and Michigan, featuring a presentation on the Governor’s Belle Isle to Wisconsin Trail, as well as presentations from the Michigan Office of the Great Lakes, Ontario Ministry of Tourism and Culture, and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources UP Coordinator.
The 2nd Annual Twin Saults Regional Collaboration Conference will be held at the Walker L. Cisler Center on the campus of Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan on Wednesday October 30 from 2 to 5 p.m., and Thursday, October 31, 2013 from 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.
The cost to attend the event is $25 for UPEDA members and $40 for non-members.
Conference sponsors in addition to the hosting organizations include the U.S. Economic Development Administration, Eastern Upper Peninsula Regional Planning and Development Commission (UPRPDC), Lake Superior State University, Sault Michigan and Sault, Ontario Economic Development Corporations (EDCs), the Michigan State University Center for Community and Economic Development, and the International Bridge Authority.
