Harvard faculty member shares her expertise with Algoma District School Board staff
Stefanie Reinhorn is a Faculty Member of the Harvard Graduate School of Education in Boston, Massachusetts.
She is an advanced doctoral student in the Education Policy, Leadership and Instructional Practice strand of the Ed.D program at Harvard.
Stefanie helps to design, develop, and facilitate four-day intensive institutes focused on the network-based learning practice known as Instructional Rounds.
The Algoma District School Board (ADSB) has invited Stefanie to Sault Ste Marie for four days to consult and to provide important, hands-on instruction in this area for our principals, superintendents and director.
The process of Instructional Rounds begins with the formation of a network whose members commit to helping schools and network members address problems of student learning.
A school’s identified problem of student learning, called a “problem of practice” (POP) serves as the focus for each network visit to a school.
The network members are scheduled to enter multiple classrooms in small groups, use expert and precise observation techniques, and take careful notes.
After observing in a majority of the classrooms, the network reconvenes and analyzes what they have seen and heard.
The debriefing results in the creation of a comprehensive picture of teaching and learning throughout the school as a whole.
These school-wide patterns are then used by the network to predict what students would know and be able to do as a result of being educated in this school.
The members conclude their work by taking on the central question of what would need to happen in this school and system-wide to address the “problem of practice” and improve learning.
This later stage of the work results in recommendations presented as options for the school.
The options include ideas for what could be done next week, next month, and over the course of a year.
These options take into account time schedules, resources, and necessary support at the school and network/district level.
Stefanie accompanied ADSB staff members to conduct a school visit during the day Tuesday and will do so again Wednesday, as she shares her techniques and observations with the group.
Her visit culminates Thursday morning with a debrief with ADSB principals and senior administration.

Earlier in the day, she and ADSB principals, superintendents and director of education, took part in Instructional Rounds at East View Public School and then returned to the Education Centre to compile and review data.
