Conversational and cultural workshops happening at Algoma U
SAULT STE. MARIE - Algoma University and the Modern Languages Department are pleased to offer the new 2013 Fall Language Program, a series of conversational workshops, which provide students and community members with the opportunity to learn how to converse in French, Arabic, and Japanese.
Workshops will begin as early as October 18 and run until November 22.
These language workshops provide participants with basic fundamental language skills for communicating in other countries or provinces.
The workshops are ideal for those planning a trip or venturing abroad, since participants will cover topics of conversation which include travel, cooking, favourite pastimes, and hobbies.
Such sessions will give participants confidence in asking for directions, ordering food, reserving rooms, and having light conversations with locals.
Participants will also be given the opportunity to learn about cultural experiences of the language of interest, and about living in an ever-increasing multicultural community.
Some grammar will also be reviewed.
The language workshops will be taught by teams consisting of one language professor, either Isabelle Michaud or Luci Marini-Wurdemann, both Adjunct Professors in the Modern Languages Department, and one student-teacher.
Each session is two hours long.
Those who complete a full workshop, which requires participation in all three of the workshop dates in that given language, will receive an honorary certificate of completion from the Modern Languages Department.
This certificate can enhance your resume with proof of global learning, essential in today's multicultural society.
"I am thrilled Algoma University is offering this new Fall Language Program," begins Marini-Wurdermann. "Sault Ste. Marie is becoming more diverse, and more people are showing greater interest in becoming versed in basic communication skills in other languages. The program allows participants to become better integrated into our diverse community and welcome people of different ethnic backgrounds. Plus the program is a lot of fun!"
Those interested in participating in the French program have the option of choosing French I or French II.
French I is for true beginners and French II is for those with some experience in the language.
Each workshop is $50 for University students, $70 for University faculty and staff, and $90 for community members.
True beginners of any language are welcome to attend.
The program is open to participants 16 years of age or older.
Special consideration may be given to those who are younger.
