Culture Days start Friday. Bring the kidsThursday, September 26, 2013 by: Steffanie Petroni
“Culture is not the decoration added after a society has dealt with its basic needs. Culture is the basic need - it is the bedrock of society.” ~ Jon Hawkes
This weekend the nation will be celebrating the fourth annual Culture Days across the Country.
“Culture Days was created in response to the growing recognition that a vibrant arts and cultural sector contributes directly to a healthy and stable society.”
The event is a grassroots movement reliant upon the collaborative efforts of local artists, municipalities and organizations.
And of course it wouldn’t be a celebration of culture without community members to share it with.
On Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sault Ste. Marie citizens are encouraged to head down to the Public Library and participate in the myriad of activities planned for our communities second annual Culture Days celebration.
This year’s partners include The Arts Council, the Art Gallery of Algoma, Canadian Bushplane Museum and Sault Community Career Centre.
Outdoor and indoor venues have been organized and will host demonstrations, music and arts and crafts It will be an interactive experience for everyone!
The youth culture and P-Flag will also be represented at the event.
Organizer Teddy Syrette commented, “We hope to see more people come out for culture days and more people being aware of the different cultures in SSM. We also want people to remember to celebrate their own culture as well.”
