Michael Casselman makes a court appearance Tuesday, September 17, 2013 by: Steffanie Petroni
Michael Casselman appeared in court today via video remand.
His lawyer, Bruce Wilson, is in the process of filing a bail review.
Last week’s decision by Justice of the Peace Marcel Bedard to deny Casselman bail was received with mixed reactions by the community.
The review has been scheduled for September 25.
If the review is successful Casselman would be released that day.
However should Casselman be denied bail a second time he is scheduled to be spoken to via video remand on September 26.
On August 31, 54-year-old Casselman was arrested and charged with one count of operating a motor vehicle and exceeding the legal limit causing death.
However as a result of the ongoing investigation Mr. Casselman was later charged with one count of impaired driving causing death of Christa Lukenda Michaud.

I don't think the guy will get a fair trial in the Soo. I am sure he wishes he could turn back the clock. Everyone wants to hang the guy, .... scary thought.

Wow cant believe there are mixed feelings or whatever that said. Casselman killed an innocent beautiful girl because he was drunk. End of story. And some people think that is ok.
Lynx 9/17/2013 12:59:43 PM Report
It about breaks my heart that this tragedy had to even happen. Since Christa's passing, I have sent many silent prayers to the family, not even knowing them. There is no excuse for his action. One day, he will answer for taking a young beauty from her husband and family.
It is important to hold memories dear and family close... thinking of you all.
Mr. Poster 9/17/2013 1:06:37 PM Report
Denying him bail should only happen if he is considered a FURTHER threat to society if released on bail. No one is suggesting he not be dealt with harshly at his trial. He must, and will, if found guilty pay the price.
Lynx 9/17/2013 1:14:25 PM Report
Hey, don't want any FURTHER threat on the road.
Golden Girl 9/17/2013 1:53:20 PM Report
No remorse for him whats so ever, he needs to be responsible now for his actions. I can't believe the number of people that have since been charged with the same acts. Please don't drink and drive.
all done 9/17/2013 2:12:01 PM Report
Yes, there was mixed response to his bail hearing. He screwed up, who of us have not. He will do his time and he will be punished, perhaps more by himself than by the law. No question it was horrible. But like it or not he needs to be processed under the law and that means he is entitled to bail if he is not a risk. The bail hearing is about bail, not about guilt or innocents or revenge.
Lynx 9/17/2013 2:23:31 PM Report
Never mind that.. a life is lost now, family grieving. Bail, I hope not. Be supportive, never mind, this guy has taken a life away.

dinho1985 9/17/2013 4:48:43 PM Report
@ Alystr. That's such a great idea; but, you should be the one to do it. You and GSB should conspire to pay him a visit when granted parole, and take his life. Clearly you do not think he deserves to live. Shake your head, shake it again, and then run as fast as you can into oncoming traffic!!! Would that make you better than him if you and GSB gave him the same fate as the poor woman whose life was lost?

are you kidding me people that think he deserves to be out again give your head a shake he has done this three times and this time he is finally succeeded to kill somebody and you think he has the right to be out on bail what if that was one of your children or one of your family members how would that make you feel I feel very sorry for the family that has lost Christa and her husband, not only did they take her life but they have taken Ryan as well because she was his life it does not matter how you kill somebody murder is jail time if I shot somebody with a gun tomorrow I would be in jail but yet if I get behind the wheel of a car after drinking then its not life in jail should be the same murder is murder get over it he has killed somebody this time and will spend his life time in jail I hope if not it just shows us what kind of people we have running for are police system, and court system please take this man off the street one less we have to worry about on killing someone else that we love cannot imagine having to walk down the road and face him if he killed my daughter

"whatever a man is sowing, this he shall also reap" - The Bible.
The same goes for those wishing death upon this guy. Unless you wish death upon yourself. Stop playing god!
"Stop Judging and you will by no means be judged; stop condemning and you will by no means be condemned" - The Bible.
Let the judge take care of it.
According to scripture, he deserves death as punishment. But, we don't live in the same era and we have evolved and disintegrated morally.
Fornication and adultery used to be a crime. Now it's perfectly normal, legal and acceptable to rip a heart apart like it's nothing-a piece of garbage. We adapt to that over time and then what happens? Ok, it sounds like i'm blabbing off topic. But, whatever. I have had a few..
What you focus on, expands. You put your attention, energy and focus on wishing death upon another human, you're only asking for it for yourself. You're focused on 'death' basically. You focus all your energy on negative news and wishing hell upon others; how do you think that will make you feel? I bet that makes you feel good doesn't it.. LOL..

I felt devastated for the family of the victim and felt sad for the guy.. until now. Learning that he has 'reported' two other DUI's under his belt does not lead me to believe that he has learned his lesson. Maybe a shock lesson to him and other drunk drivers that their loved one - a child, parent or sibling, has been killed by a drunk driver and seeing an autopsy of an unidentified person might be enough to make them physically sick, deny or go into shock.. MIGHT stop them. If it doesn't - I trust that a tattoo or 'body art' of "I'm a stupid FU*( that risks a human life for a pint of beer" on a visible body part may just dissuade them. You deserve a life of bitch servitude buddy. Oh and yes I had a glass of beer tonight behind my computer screen NOT a car steering wheel tonight.

BRIT 9/17/2013 10:47:51 PM Report
Yes there was a brutal murder last month - the reason it's not still is the news is EITHER because it's solved and the accused is awaiting trial or the sensitive nature of the investigation is at such a crucial point that news coverage would not benefit at that time. This story was about a woman killed by an idiot. FULL STOP

although not the same in the sault star or soonews.
BRIT 9/17/2013 11:26:03 PM Report
dinho1985 why? because I'm educated and have an opinion. Why would shock therapy not work? and trust me that I am open to discussions. Drinking and driving is not an acceptable choice nor socially acceptable. Please note all critiques - I said A beer NOT an over the top - unable to control my car and mowing down a cyclist - beer. I wonder what the accused feels about capital punishment for drug dealers? you too dinhol985. It opens up a whole new worm hole for the maggots. Same ending...
mac2 9/17/2013 11:34:04 PM Report
to say drinking and driving isn't socially acceptable isn't 100% true, want proof? go to any establishment, and watch the people drink, and drive away, with passengers,
but i get what you are trying to say, although i didnt get the part about the accused and drug dealers/capital punishment and dinho is in the mix too?
Prrrrrrr 9/17/2013 11:36:21 PM Report
In my opinion, I think putting a picture and information about prior convictions of the accused on a news website could help out the accused in some way down the road when and if there is jury selection.

i think the idiot should just get put into a cell for a looong time and have that time to think on what he did. why should he be aloud back out? if she cant live to see anything then why should he be allowed to live outside a cell and see day light? i don't even recall mixed emotions on anything. the guy does NOT deserve bail. he deserves to pretty much rot for what he did last month.
just imagine how you would feel if it was one of your siblings who was killed. i have 3 brothers and a sister and if it was one of them i know i would want justice to be brought and not have the person come out of it. jeez louise. come one people its something he shouldn't be allowed to have bail for.

you think spewing rage and hate and rotting etc is helping anything? the victims family is suffering, the perpetrator's family is suffering, the perpetrator is suffering, there! you feel better now? now go to bed! lol
dinho1985 9/17/2013 11:50:20 PM Report
Well, for starters, shock therapy, and the shock lesson you speak about are two totally separate entities. Kudos to you for being educated, though! Drinking and driving IS not socially acceptable; however, personally you have no idea what goes through the mind of any individual who chooses to do so, but tell me about your experience. It's clearly way more dynamic than you claim to know, and to be quite frank, I wish you had some sort of an addiction. I'll do you one better. Educate yourself on addiction, and some of the negative choices that can potentially be made while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and get back to me.... Your 'shock lesson' sounds like it might work, though! Tell me about that one, too.... Lol
BRIT 9/17/2013 11:58:45 PM Report
just trying to point out that some people find capital punishment unacceptable in other countries for the murder of others when using a 'recognized weapon such as a gun or knife' yet using a vehicle knowing that impaired driving can cause a victim the same fate is at best, idiotic. Also the same with drug use - you are still incapable - in charge of a weapon which is potentially more aggressive than others. This story has and will always be about a guy who thought it is acceptable to take a mind altering product and think that he was able to defy biology.

For those of you commenting on the disproportionate amount of coverage this story has gotten when compared to the recent murder, I'd just like to point out that the murder took place inside an apartment building, not out on the street. We couldn't get anywhere near the scene. If we can find out when next the accused is to appear in court we will be doing our best to take a picture of him. We report the news we can get. It's as simple as that.
Please send news tips to email@example.com and keep in mind that your tips are anonymous. We can't see the emails they come from so, unless you leave contact information in the body of the tip, we can't follow up with you.

I also believe that there is a possibility that the Lukenda family are not wanted MR. Cassleman to die!!! They are wonderful beautiful people that believe in the justice system and will have faith that he will receive the correct punishment. So before you post such rude and disgusting comments please stop and think is their is a possibility that you may be hurting someone with your words before you post.
