(Updated) Rain closes one school, affects BBQ events at othersTuesday, September 10, 2013 by: SooToday.com Staff
The rain and concerns about possible flooding prompted the Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board to close St. John Catholic School for the day.
Overnight and early this morning water was very high in the neighbourhood surrounding St. John and was close to the entrance doors, a news release states.
“Decisions related to school closures and bus cancellations are made in consultation with city officials and our coterminous boards,” said Director of EducationJohn Stadnyk.
“We erred on the side of caution in deciding to close the school today and hope parents understand the reason. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. The safety of our students and staff is of paramount concern to us."
Further investigation indicates that no water damage to the interior of the school was sustained.
The school will re-open tomorrow for students.
Today's cancellation of school bussing means St. Basil Secondary School will not hold its Grade 9 Welcome Barbeque as scheduled this evening.
The barbeque will be rescheduled with a note given to Grade 9 students providing details of the new date and time.
And, the Algoma District School Board advices that the CASS Family Fun Night & BBQ scheduled for tonight has been rescheduled to Tuesday, September 17 from 6 - 8 p.m.
