Socks and Gentle Jake. From Gatineau to St. Joe IslandThursday, September 05, 2013 by: SooToday.com Staff
Loyal SooToday.com reader Lynda LeVair sent us the following message and photos to share with readers the story of Gentle Jakes Coonhound Rescue
"[It] is a small group pulling hounds off death row and placing them for adoption in permanent homes," LeVair said. "I thought this 'feel-good' story was worth passing on to SooToday."
He had to be moved a couple of times and couldn’t seem to catch a break.
The foster home in Gatineau, QC was served with a warning notice since they were over their limit of three dogs on the premises.
So the adoption of Socks to a young family on a local farm, on St. Joseph's Island, came just in the nick of time.
A lot of people work round the clock in the background to rescue and place a dog.
It starts with the co-ordinator of the group making the pull from the pound, vetting is arranged, a foster placement must be available.
Evaluation and training begin, advertising and promotions are done, applicant screening and home visit is done by another volunteer.
Then we still have to arrange transport for the dog.
Socks was lucky enough to fly from Gatineau, QC to Parry Sound, and onward to Sault Ste Marie with the aid of generous volunteer pilots with Pilots N Paws Canada who braved thunderstorms to get him to his final destination on Sunday, September 1.
Socks is quiet, timid, well –mannered.
And just a sweetheart that is one of the lucky ones to escape a death sentence and get a second chance at life because a lot of people care.
Gentle Jakes Coonhound Rescue currently has 15 hounds on their adoption list (http://www.coonhoundrescue.
Socks would just like to say a special thanks to Gentle Jakes Coonhound Rescue and Pilots N Paws Canada!
