A candidate for Michigan’s open United States Senate seat will be in the Michigan Soo this afternoon.
Democratic Representative Gary Peters is bringing his “Michigan First” Listening Tour to town.
He hopes to win the seat that will be vacated by veteran Democratic Senator Carl Levin who announced his retirement earlier this year.
At 3 p.m.today, Peters will be campaigning at Island Books and Crafts, 101 E. Portage Avenue.
“There’s a reason people are frustrated with Washington because there is too much talking that goes on and not enough listening," Peters says. "I have always believed that the things middle class families struggle with around their kitchen tables should define my fight.
“On this Michigan First Listening Tour, I want to visit every corner of our great state to hear directly from people across Michigan about the concerns they have for their family and ways we can create new opportunity and a middle class that is stronger than ever.”
Peters has spent his life in Michigan.
He served in the U.S. Navy Reserve, rising to the rank of Lt. Commander.
While going to school at night and working to support his family, Peters built a career as a successful businessman for more than 20 years.
Frustrated by the gridlock in Washington, the Senate hopeful says he is standing up to the leaders in both parties to stop wasteful spending and invest in the true engines of Michigan’s economy – small businesses.
Peters currently represents Greater Detroit's 14th Congressional District.
