Happening all weekend in Garden River (4 photos)

Saturday, August 17, 2013   by: SooToday.com Staff

Faithful SooToday.com reader Joseph Corbiere submitted the note below and accompanying photos from last night's opening of the 9th annual Garden River Traditional Pow Wow.

The event continues all weekend with Grand Entries at 1 and 7 p.m. today, and 1 p.m. on Sunday.

The Jingtamook feast begins at 5 p.m. today.

***************************
Come one, come all and celebrate life.

Celebrate your children, your partners your friends and family.

We live in a beautiful place.

Come and dance in celebration.

The 9th annual Garden River Traditional Pow Wow opened last evening.

Young and old came to dance, visit and make new friends.

The theme of this years pow wow is to honour the Jingle Dress dancers.

The women, the givers of life and the foundation of the Anishnabe we honour you today and every day.

Come and enjoy your self.

Grand entries today at 1 and 7 pm.

There will be dancing all day.

Different events and fun times.

Follow the head dancers Barbara Day and Steve Nolan.

Doris Boissoneau will explain what is going on and Donald Syrette will direct the dancing arena.

Get your picture taken in front of the biggest dream catcher that I have ever seen.

Let the dream catcher catch those bad dreams and let the good dreams in.

Enjoy the food vendors and browse through the artists booths.

Take highway 17B thru downtown Garden River, make a turn at the Big Arrow gas bar and convenience store, follow point Charles Road and bear to the right.

You will soon be there.

P.S. Bring your dancing slippers and no blockades!

After all the frustration earlier in the year, I'm going to support anything in Garden River. Yeah, right!

"P.S. Bring your dancing slippers and no blockades!"

Is that supposed to be a joke? In my opinion, poor taste.

I used to love celebrating with my friends at the six nations reserve for many years. I recently attended a pow-wow held at my children's school and I really felt like an outsider more than ever.

All in all, I hope this celebration goes well.

maybe we should put a blockade at the enterance of 17B and show our support!!

Really is so sad to see such hatred. Education will save you all of the frustration of not having a clue what is going on. And truly...if you can't say something positive, only negative...what does that say to you about your own wounded spirit?

Really sad to see hatred.

I went there for the Saturday events & was not disappointed at all, everyone was friendly & we all blended, as we should. The dancers were all awesome, the feast was delicious. Miigwetch!

I don't see any hatred in the comments, I see frustration over past experiences.

It's a shame you've read hatred into that. In fact, I wished the celebration well.

The invitation to the Pow Wow was lovely but why the instigating P.S. comment???? For most, that would be the farthest idea from our thoughts.
