Significant rainfall possible through Sunday (5:13 a.m.)
 
Special weather statement for: Lake Nipigon - Wabikimi - Gerladton - Manitouwadge - Hornepayne - Nipigon - Marathon - Superior North - Wawa - White River - Pukaskwa - Sault Ste. Marie - Superior East - Kapuskasing - Hearst - Timmins - Cochrane - Iroquois Falls - Chapleau - Gogama - Elliot Lake - Ranger Lake - Thessalon.
 
A broad area of low pressure near the Great Lakes is giving much of Northern Ontario persistent showers which may be heavy at times due to embedded thunderstorms.
 
The area of low pressure is forecast to remain fairly stationary over the Great Lakes region for the next few days resulting in several rounds of showers and thunderstorms this weekend.
 
Rainfall amounts will be highly variable with 40 to 60mm likely in a few areas by Sunday morning.
 
Higher amounts are quite possible locally in areas that receive multiple thunderstorms.
 
Note that the expected rainfall amounts fall below Environment Canada's rainfall warning criteria of 50mm in a 24-hour period.
 
Environment Canada is closely monitoring the situation and will issue additional statements and warnings if required.

Rainfall warning for Sault Ste. Marie - St. Joseph Island - Searchmont - Montreal River Harbour - Batchawana Bay is canceled.
 
Rainfall warning for Elliot Lake - Ranger Lake - Blind River - Thessalon is continued.
 
A broad area of rain with embedded thunderstorms extends from Lake Michigan towards Northeastern Ontario.

Areas east of Lake Superior will receive several rounds of thunderstorms with heavy downpours as the rain tracks northeastward this evening.

Local rainfall amounts of 50 mm or more are expected before the rain tapers off overnight.

For the Elliot Lake - Ranger Lake and Blind River - Thessalon regions the heavy rain will likely affect the western sections with rainfall amounts considerably less over the east.
