Elementa Group Inc. could be one step closer to building its waste-to-energy plant in Sault Ste. Marie.
City Council discussed the sale Monday of part of 903 Base Line (15.3 acres) to Elementa, which has long dreamed of building a waste-to-energy conversion facility in this community.
Elementa utilizes a process that turns household garbage into energy.
The company has been working towards Ministry of the Environment (MOE) approvals since January 2010, which has led to delays in making the property purchase.
Elementa needs to obtain an energy from waste agreement with Ontario Power Authority (OPA).
That agreement is part of a purchase and sale agreement.
Elementa hopes to begin construction of a facility on Base Line in spring 2014, and no later than fall 2014.
A City staff report to Council stated it appears Elementa will receive the MOE's nod to proceed with its project.
Cost of the Base Line property purchase is $232,192.50.
The staff report advises Council, however, not to go ahead with sale of the property if MOE approval for Elementa's project does not materialize.
