SooToday.com spoke this afternoon with Sault Ste. Marie Police Services Staff Sergeant Jane Martynuk who confirmed that the City of Sault Ste. Marie asked officers to conduct an investigation into "a matter of financial concern" with regards to the Essar Centre.

She told us the investigation is in its very preliminary stages and as such, she could not publicly identify any persons involved, potential suspects, or pending charges.

As reported by the Sault Star, City of Sault Ste. Marie CAO Joe Fratesi confirmed that Essar Centre Marketing and Events Manager, Trevor Zachary, “is no longer associated with the city.”

The development reportedly follows a City of Sault Ste. Marie review of the Essar Centre's finances.

Norm Fera, manager of community centres, will fill Zachary's position until a permanent replacement is found.

SooToday.com was unable to reach Zachary for comment.

City of Sault Ste. Marie Commissioner of Human Resources, John Luszka, told the Sault Star that the Sault Police Service is involved and an investigation is underway.

It is unknown if charges are pending.

Zachary held the position of marketing and events manager since the arena's launch in 2006.
