Algoma U entertained Grade 11 students from across Northern Ontario

SAULT STE. MARIE - Have you ever wanted to participate in The Amazing Race

Algoma University staff brought a sense of adventure and competition to campus as Grade 11 students from across Northern Ontario competed in their own rendition of the popular television series.

On May 10, 13, and 14, the University hosted their annual Grade 11 Days, which featured two hours of action-packed racing.

Students from high schools in Sault Ste. Marie, and the surrounding Algoma region, including in Espanola, Hornepayne, and Elliot Lake, attended Grade 11 Days, for an opportunity to get a dynamic tour of the University, including residences, Student Services, the Speak Easy, the Algoma University Students' Union (AUSU), the Bishop Fauquier Memorial Chapel, and the George Leach Centre (GLC).

At least one member from every department in the University was involved in the days' activities.

"Grade 11 Days is a great way for prospective students to experience university life," said Director of Student Recruitment, Brent Krmpotich. "It allows students the opportunity to explore our campus before they have to start considering their options for post-secondary education in their final year of high school. It gives students a taste of all that university has to offer, including academics, support services, and student life activities."

The locations and tasks of each challenge were carefully selected.

Each provided students with information and an understanding of how to perform and succeed as a post-secondary student.

For out of town students, it gave them a preview of residence life, since they spent the night in the University's New Dormitory.

After being welcomed onto campus at 10 a.m., groups of five or six students began racing to complete various challenges and tasks at each location, with the assistance of admissions advisors, staff, and international student volunteers.

The top three teams who finished the race first successfully were given prizes.

There was approximately 300 students on campus over the course of the three days.

Students were provided with lunch and colourful bandannas.
