Telus Cup opens with a bang

Sunday, April 21, 2013   by: SooToday.com Staff

Some readers are wondering what all the fuss was about at about 9 p.m. Sunday.

Loud explosions set a few people's nerves on edge but they can rest assured that the sounds were fireworks set off to celebrate the beginning of the Telus Cup.

Sault Ste. Marie is hosting Canada's premier Midget Hockey event from April 21 to 28 at the Essar Centre.

Game play starts tomorrow at noon with the Ottawa Junior 67s facing the Saskatoon Contacts.

The Sault Ste. Marie North Stars, ranked fifth overall, face the Valley Wildcats for their first game at 7:30 on Monday.

For more information on Telus Cup 2013, including where and how to get tickets, visit the website

Note: The SooToday.com photo shown is not of the fireworks from Sunday night.

hey Sootoday, thanks for not letting us know about the Fireworks!! I would have loved to go watch them BUT no one made any sort of announcement regarding them
Brianne 4/21/2013 10:05:49 PM Report

Would have been nice if the residents of the city were informed of this display.

Hope the telus cup participants weren't too upset that no one from the city showed up ! What a shame !
Sam C 4/21/2013 11:11:27 PM Report

Hounds Fan... it is possible that the organizers didn't let the media know about the fireworks... I hadn't read anything on any site about them prior to this report.
Sam C 4/21/2013 11:13:26 PM Report

..in fact, I'm wondering if the fireworks might only have been intended for Telus Cup participants? There is nothing on their website about fireworks.
FirstChairLastCall 4/21/2013 11:13:33 PM Report

There was likely a large number of people watching that participate in the event. Tellus cup is big, every hotel is sold out.
Wicket 4/21/2013 11:43:55 PM Report

there was a meet and greet at the Delta tonight for the teams...don't think there would have been room for the general public to attend the opening ceremonies, it appears it was for the participants..
brandonskiing123 4/21/2013 11:44:01 PM Report

i saw the fireworks, i heard about them through my work...in my opinion they were almost as good if not better than the canada day ones just shorter
kamen 4/21/2013 11:47:29 PM Report

How come no one ever informs us when there are going to be fireworks and at what time they will be? Would have loved to gone and watched them...
Snowdon 4/22/2013 12:35:10 AM Report

When are you not informed of fireworks? Every other time the City puts on fireworks the public is notified in advance.
r_0_x_y 4/22/2013 4:04:49 AM Report

yet another event we find out about after the fact ... maybe this site should be renamed to SooYesterday.com
rcamp211 4/22/2013 6:19:32 AM Report

would have been nice if TELUS TELL US about the fireworks.
golfer62 4/22/2013 6:26:34 AM Report

In fact it was only for the participants.
25miller 4/22/2013 6:55:42 AM Report

They forgot to TELL US !!!!!!
25miller 4/22/2013 6:58:11 AM Report

Shame on the City stuff for keeping this a secret from the Sault residents...But that's the Sault for ya...I bet they had front row seats...All I got was woken up thinking we were at war...Thanks for the scare..
KIDDO 4/22/2013 7:15:56 AM Report

@ 25miller, perhaps if you got up and away from your computer once in awhile and god forbid chose to volunter at one of these events you would know what their agenda would be. This way you could have watched your fireworks.
hockeytime 4/22/2013 7:37:51 AM Report

sunshine0274 4/22/2013 9:18:45 AM Report

E-Mails were sent to all PeeWee Hockey Families. They were looking for 100 PeeWee Kids to wear their Jerseys and form a Tunnel for all the Players to walk threw. 10 kids showed up. My son being one of them. The players were outside for an hour and a half freezing while we listened to Mayor Debbie tell them we are a Hockey town. we have had players like Wayne Gretzy play here.... but she forgot any other Great Player we have had .... I found it pritty rhude espescially since the First Nation Gave an Awesome performance wearing their Head Dresses and dancing to the Drum"s. What about Tyler Kennnedy.. Debbie? She forgot his name and the other Greats she saved herself by saying We thought we would invite all you to February Wearther to keep you prepared for playing hockey.. Really?. She had no speech prepared. In Attendance were a few high ups.. A few players parents and the Few PeeWee Kids and Parents. Thumbs Down on this one!!
MJDB 4/22/2013 9:29:53 AM Report

From my house it sounded like a barrage of gunfire. All I could see was smoke and hear loud bangs. I thought something was happening at the bridge. The city should have some kind of advance notification.
JediMindTrick 4/22/2013 10:58:23 AM Report

I was very confused for a while...
Loud bangs and big flashes at the waterfront had me curious.
But... was not concerned enough to look out my window.
Nebey 4/22/2013 1:25:33 PM Report

I just happened to be out with my camera last night, I tried to make it down to the fireworks when I heard them going off. As soon as I got it all setup, I heard the cheering and horn honking because it was the finale. I was pretty angry at that point, not only was I (like everyone one else in town) not informed. I rushed there to take some photos and missed getting any by mere seconds. From what I saw, they were pretty nice.
Millertime69 4/22/2013 2:04:28 PM Report

Poor little posters didn't get a chance to see the fireworks! Poor, poor, babies!!! What a shame!!! Poor little posters!!! Waa,Waa,Waa!!!
guestwho 4/23/2013 3:57:36 PM Report
