Train derails near Bruce Street (6 photos, video)

Saturday, March 23, 2013   by: SooToday.com Staff

A Huron Central Railway freight train has derailed just east of Bruce Street.

Two train cars are resting upright and off the tracks.

No fluid appears to be leaking anywhere and traffic on Bruce Street is not affected by the derailment.

Shortly after 1 p.m. Saturday Saultites were disturbed by a loud bang.

Some residents in the downtown area reported their windows were rattled by it.

SooToday.com will have more on this story as information becomes available.

Those aren't tanker cars! They're coil cars - and that's a minor and normal derailment.

Get your facts straight, come on now.
opinionated 3/23/2013 2:15:19 PM Report

Ok maybe not a "normal" derailment, someone wasn't watching as close as they should have been while shunting after I look at the picture better - that car was off for awhile!

But non-the-less, they aren't tanker cars!

Sounds like you better get your fax straight before you shout your mouth off.To many people with nothing better to do than sound negative bought everything. You people need to find something positive to do. Negativity does not make anything better. We have enought of it around.Go out and enjoy the sun shine. You might be surprised how nice it will make you feel.

Enjoy the weekend.

not tanker cars
pacman8 3/23/2013 2:43:40 PM Report

ya, he got his facts straight, not a tanker and yes it is a normal derailment, they derail all the time so it must be normal,,,maybe you should quit yer bitchin and go enjoy the day if you know how to
Stugatzu 3/23/2013 2:57:09 PM Report

Yes, those are definitely coil cars.

Coil car, or tanker car -- either way, there was a derailment. Most important things are that nobody got hurt, and traffic didn't get affected.
Just Curious 3/23/2013 3:36:09 PM Report

Those tracks thru town are so bad I'm surprised they don't derail more often. They have a 15k speed limit in town because the tracks are so bad. Go down by Pino's and stand by the tracks and watch. I'm absolutely amazed they get out of town.Sit at Pine and watch the train go by and it is toddling back and forth so bad it makes you nervous.Take a walk and look at the ties, most of them wouldn't make good firewood and the rails aren't fastened to half of them.Huron Central is just using it as long as they can and then will apply for another bailout just before they drop it entirely.Essar Steel should buy it out and privatise it,then it would make money..:)
graphix-guy 3/23/2013 3:42:53 PM Report

Can anybody on here spell? Seriously! It's laughable! All people do on here is whine and bitch. It's always the same people and they appear to spend their lives commenting and complaining about everything. They always have a solution or a criticism but "coach from the couch" with a level of spelling and grammar that isn't acceptable after grade three in Canada (which is the equivalent to senior in high school in the U.S.) Hah! New rule: People need be 'Hooked On Phonics' before they're allowed to open their $%!+hole!
Shortz 3/23/2013 4:36:00 PM Report

Just Curious is right about the poor rail maintenance through town.

My ex and I would walk her dogs along the tracks between Bruce St and North Street regularly. A lot of the rail ties are rotten. I'm able to pull rail spikes out with very little to no effort with my bare hands in a lot of places.
RLE 3/23/2013 4:59:42 PM Report

Just Curious: Last time I checked,Huron Central is a privately owned company.

Thanks to all of you for letting us know they're not tanker cars (duh), you'd think it was the only derailment that ever happened, derailments happen daily in Canada, like the one poster posted go out a get some sun its been a long winter.
book-end 3/23/2013 5:04:00 PM Report

Shortz

Pulling rail spikes out ???? Could it be you responsible for the de-railment ?

Sure hope I spelled everything correctly
graphix-guy 3/23/2013 5:44:10 PM Report

No dice. No spaces before the "?" Nice try though, back to class...

@graphix-guy
Be nice it's not like people are making fun of the leafs on here. They just want to argue about wasting tax dollars and bitching about natives you know that sort of thing. Lol
Stugatzu 3/23/2013 6:03:40 PM Report

I'm In: the article itself referred to them as tankers. No need to be a smart-ass about people correcting the article's description of the incident.

Shortz: I'm sure Huron Central would love to know that you're tampering with private property. If they ever catch you doing it, or in possession of a rail spike -- they can and will press charges.

VEROTIK 3/23/2013 7:46:33 PM Report

Too bad it wasnt chemicals that part of town could use a rip roaring fire
Shortz 3/23/2013 9:08:20 PM Report

book-end and Stugatzu: that's what I get for not proofreading. The touch pad on my laptop is sensitive and it doesn't take a lot to re-position the cursor while typing something and not noticing it. The last sentence of my response should have read (caps are the part that was missing):

"I'm SURE I WOULD BE able to pull rail spikes out with very little to no effort with my bare hands in a lot of places."

I've proofread this before posting it this time.

Very well said, it's disheartening to see the opinions on here expressed with no regard for the English language.

Lol!!!!
groundspeed 3/24/2013 9:27:39 AM Report

Although they aren't tank cars, fluid may still leak from damaged hydraulic brake hoses. If they are pneumatic brakes, then I stand corrected.
crashed13 3/24/2013 10:27:13 AM Report

I Read it over and over. I don,t see where the ever mention them as tankers cars.
The only fluid comming out of those would be water from trapped melting snow and ice.
dicks 3/24/2013 11:22:50 AM Report

STAND CORRECTED
Stugatzu 3/24/2013 8:30:37 PM Report

You won't read anything in the article about them being "tanker" cars, because SooToday has edited the article.
