Armed robbery at TD Bank

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is seeking the public’s assistance in solving an armed robbery that occurred this morning at the TD Canada Trust Bank in the Cambrian Mall.

At approximately 7:20 a.m. two males entered the bank and took an unconfirmed amount of cash.

The suspects then fled the scene in an unknown vehicle.

Both suspects are described as white males with balaclavas around their faces.

Both were wearing dark coloured gloves, blue jeans and blue toques with a white pattern around them.

One male was wearing a blue and white plaid “hunter style” coat and the second male was wearing a grey winter jacket with black patches on the shoulders.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service Criminal Investigations Division.

We ask that anyone who may have observed a vehicle in the Cambrian Mall parking lot before 7:30 this morning please contact police with a description of that vehicle.

One has to wonder how they got in to the bank before it even opened. This says inside job all the way. I hope a video is released to the public, they have cameras plastered everywhere in there.
grammie 3/20/2013 9:33:38 AM Report

They need money for there fix, drugs make people do irrational things.
uh? 3/20/2013 9:39:08 AM Report

I didn't even know the bank was open that early in the morning.
Studlee 3/20/2013 9:39:36 AM Report

There ya go folks, typical sault thinking that all criminals are druggies. Sorry to burst your bubble there grammie but druggie lowlifes in this city aren't brazen enough to rob banks, they opt out for the convenience stores and gas bars where only one person is working, think about it! This is a bigtime, well planned and executed bank robbery. These guys must have known what they were doing to be able to penetrate a bank, steal the money (which is secured) and get away.
dadal 3/20/2013 9:46:26 AM Report

The economic crisis in the Soo has been a long standing issue way before the global situation was realized. Lack of jobs for the youth and what jobs there are tend to be minimum wage-just enough of a pay to make ends meet but not enough to get ahead. Add the acceptance of alcohol abuse in the city and surrounding areas and you create a financial environment that screams crime. While possible the culprits COULD be from out of area, highly unlikely as they were aware of an early opening bank which they could hit quick and get away before the normal morning rush hour began. Mac robberies are becoming common as youths strike looking for quick money. Robbing a bank takes more nerve...or desperation
Studlee 3/20/2013 9:47:12 AM Report

Uh? The bank was closed at the time. branch hours are 8 am to 8 pm on weekdays.
iamtc 3/20/2013 9:47:13 AM Report

This crime will go unsolved the police could'nt even catch an m&m in their mouth plus are justice system is to relaxed about these crimes its not a good thing to get robbed but at the same time we all get robbed by banking fees.
thesharr 3/20/2013 9:53:24 AM Report

Years ago, wasn't there a bank robbery at a credit union and a chief of police was in line and they never caught the person, amgine that.

dadal 3/20/2013 9:54:44 AM Report

You're right Studlee. Those looking for money for drugs do so as needed. They rob passerby's or would hit a quick rob like a Macs. Robbing a bank is something planned. Especially with two of them doing so. And besides, most crimes done " under the influence" in the Soo are committed through alcohol abuse, NOT drugs...despite what local police want everyone to think.
Boomboom 3/20/2013 9:58:44 AM Report

Could be just someone trying to get ahead start on there higher property tax bill that will be coming shortly. If the city can be a crooks...they just follow suit.

right wing 3/20/2013 10:19:07 AM Report

...or it could be two girls that were dressed to look like guys and they are really bank tellers so they had keys to open the door before public hours... suffering from "snow-madness" they wanted money to buy makeup and take a vacation to a warm sunny island so they could have drinks with those little umbrellas in them...a car was not even used, they took a cab there and then they switched to wheelchairs and took the para-bus to get away.
Could be.
Dead End Kid 3/20/2013 10:19:56 AM Report

The fact that I'm not overly suprised by this, has to tell you something.

Don't people walk the malls early in the morning? Could have been dangerous.

The desperation of people needing money is a scary thing. What's next?

Wicket 3/20/2013 10:54:42 AM Report

First clue - ARMED; second clue - prior to opening hours, staff (one at a time) enter the bank - easy to hold a gun to the one with the key and gain access, third clue - keep the gun on that employee while s/he gets the money and lets thieves back out; fourth clue - gone in vehicle, no one around.
Staff member probably in extreme distress!
J&L 3/20/2013 10:58:37 AM Report

Its really funny how people go from talking about an armed robbery to bashing our City Police. I would love to see all you bashers do their job, let alone, get a job, PERIOD. They will catch the jerks who robbed the bank, who, I for one am happy they didn't kill anyone. Our officers will will spend much time, day in and day out trying to find the culprits. They stay up all night, they spend much time away from their families trying to crack these cases. But, yes, you guys know everything. Have a good day.

right wing - LOL Great theory, think this winter is getting to everyone. I agree with wicket's theory. These "cops always in the coffee shop" joke is getting so old...doesn't eveyone that works get a coffee break?? Safest place to be...lol. I am also thankful no one was killed or injured. stinky.....who cares "how" they were armed, could be a finger pointed in a coat pocket, I would comply. Personal safety is more important. Management/staff do go in well before 8a.m. And clients can do their banking 24/7 at the ATM between the doors. What an opportunity to grab a staff member to get in!! Used to be at the scotiabank one had to swipe the ATM card to get thru the doors to do ATM banking. I don't believe it is set up that way at TD.
You know, everyday items - groceries, gas, car/home/personal insurance/rent keeps going up all the time - even have to pay $5 to go to the hospital for a test or the GHC. That is "robbery"! Anyone on a disability or low income cannot even afford to eat or watch cable anymore. Finding a decently priced apartment is a whole other story! I don't know how to fix this but it is a very real problem. Some of these robberies are occurring just for everyday survival - I'm sure there will be more.

** The Police are doing a very fine job of protecting the city. This summer I got stopped by the Police for riding my bike on the sidewalk when I was going from Shogun Sushi to Colour Your World. I guess it would have been safer for everyone if I crossed the road, rode about 200 meters at around 4pm on Great Northern Rd. and then crossed back over eventhough there was not a single person on the sidewalk at that time and I was just coasting slowly down the slight slope. **

The Macs picture is full length, shows the persons shoes, pants and what appears to be a fairly unique shirt....He'll get recognized and busted, guaranteed.

The TD picture on the other hand is cropped - why? I'm sure there's a camera that caught a full shot. Much harder to recognize who it may be without the full picture....

As for defense of cops, when I was younger I wasn't a big fan, felt picked on by police, guilty until proven innocent....now that I'm older, with a family, I tend to take a different stance....It would be an interesting poll: How old are you? What is your opinion on police? Should also qualify that with: Have you ever been a victim or a charged with a crime? Those last two aside, I'm sure younger people would generally score negative, older would score positive....regardless of where you live and who your police force is.

As far as crime in SSM - we are what we are, a tough blue collar northern community. To this end, i'm sure all of the old timers remember the way things used to be, respect for others etc....That statement applies everywhere, not just ssm.

Here's my "two cents". I don't believe it is the bad economy that is driving people to commit crimes. These criminals seem to have no physical handicaps preventing them from securing paying jobs, therefore, it is pure laziness. The younger generation (no offense to the working young generation), who don't have jobs but have two good arms and two good legs are LAZY, PERIOD! Why don't they get a job? LAZY LAZY LAZY. I say, get off your ass and get a job to make money ! That's what the problem is with society. Too many lazy asses that feel they are entitled to get free money.

You people are just plain stupid if you don't understand why the SSM police is putting this on here for our community to see. Police officers are supposed to ask the people in their community for help. With only minimal evidence, what the hell do you expect them to do??? You never know if someone could have seen something or might even know the person who did it. It's called Community Policing.
Of course all you people who hate the police don't understand this but for most people, including myself, I would want to help out as much as I could instead of sitting on my computer bitching about my opinion and what COULD have been done. If all you people have so much to say, get up and DO SOMETHING about it. Stop judging the police officers in this Community. Sadly, stuff like this happens all around the world. The police officers of SSM aren't going to be able to solve every damn crime that happens in this city. They can't do all the work themselves, therefor, they ask the community for help.
sootodayreader 3/20/2013 6:19:07 PM Report

Obviously not. The Credit Union was robbed years back with the now Chief of Police standing in line.
Of course this department needs the public to solve crimes.
It shouldn't be the sole source of solving crimes in this city.
J120 3/20/2013 6:25:42 PM Report

sootodayreader : If you haven't noticed, times are changing. Social media plays an enormous part in our lives and also in solving crimes. Look at how many people alone just commented on this, it's a much easier process to post something on here with hopes that someone will be able to help out. I'm positive that the police officers also went around and asked everyone in the area if they had seen anything. It's a lot easier to post something online for others to see then going door to door asking around for clues... And I'm sure there's a good enough reason as to why they never caught the other person. If they had a gun, pretty sure you wouldn't risk your own life for a couple hundred bucks that this guy would end up stealing.
braaap104 3/20/2013 6:34:37 PM Report

@J120... The police officers in this city can't solve any crimes let alone all of them they are too busy committing their own. For example covering the trails of other officers corrupt "mistakes".
sootodayreader 3/20/2013 6:35:33 PM Report

Let's look at it this way. We have 3 separate robberies in a short amount of time. Pictures were posted to social media. No arrests because the police are totally reliant on the public to solve there cases.
Come on, this police force sits at Tim Hortons waiting for a rat. That is not police work.

@BlackHelix

hahahahaha, i didnt realize i would be called names for expressing a possibility...
i didnt say that bank robbers respected hours of operation, or respected anything for that matter! so thanks for your ridiculous sarcasm! It is a possibility that they did smash the glass doors, but they had to have known that someone would be there after 7am, with cash....lots of it.....opened and not secured around that time?!? Maybe also knowing that women would be working that particular morning that could be easily held up and most likely do whatever the "bank robbers" as you put it...ask them to do?!? according to the ppl working that day....."they waited until the girls working opened their posts".... how can you possibly know when the ppl working there have their posts open and money out when the doors are closed, and you can't directly see them from the doors??
i wont stoop to your level and start calling you names hahaha i will laugh at how you couldn't think that this could be a possibility!

@sootodayreader : Not all crimes are solved.... Do you really care that much that a crime 15 to 20 years ago hasn't been solved yet?? I doubt it. So give it up already. Police officers aren't psychic and do their job properly or else they would be fired. If they only received so much information well there's not much they can do about it... I don't understand how you don't get that?? They aren't magical and sure as hell aren't going to solve every crime.
You sound like quite the detective, why don't you start your own investigation... I'm sure you'd find out it's a lot harder then you think.

Riverpilot 3/20/2013 9:06:38 PM Report

First and foremost, I was very hesitant to include my comments on this case but out of pure disgust, I need to make a statement. Regardless of how people perceive the operations within our police department or judicial system, the point is, a crime has been committed and we should all be happy that no one was hurt. Yes, there are desperate people out there and we all see the news around the world daily, of supressed communities and brutal acts of violence. Our society today has changed so dramatically with the availability of technology and the ability to basically do anything at our finger tips. We are constantly bombarded with information, good and bad, especially on television. Try tuning in to a station without experiencing crime or violence in some form or another. Television today is total crap with reality shows and abnormal human behavior that is unacceptable......and guess what? Our children grow up watching this crap and become desensitized to things such as violent deaths (CSI, crime shows, violent gaming, etc.) I remember growing up in the 60's and 70's, most people had respect for one another and you would never hear of mass shootings, gang rapes and so forth! I just can't imagine what the future will entail for our grand children. Look what goes on especially in the U.S.!
Aside from everything said, a crime was committed today and if everyone would stop being so bloody negative and be more constructive in their thoughts/actions, maybe the Sault wouldn't be such a bad place to live. It's idots like most of you who commented on this article who expect hand outs for nothing and in turn give the Sault such a bad name. Only you can make a difference in your life. I did....and I worked hard for it while those low lifes (as I grew up) were too busy smoking dope, partying, often committing violent acts for fun and listening to hard acid rock! Don't come crying to me if you missed the train in life......but remember, it's never too late! Never give up! I'm confident these perpetrators will get nailed! Mark my word!!!!!!!!

Sam C 3/20/2013 11:47:30 PM Report

A couple of points...

Alystr... that is a completely erroneous statement!
No one robs a bank -- or a corner store or gas bar -- because they are behind on their household bills.

The banks posted hours are 8 to 8, but staff arrives prior to that. There is work to be done before and after the hours when customers are admitted.

As for having guards, most banks -- Canada Trust was one of the first -- use a central cash dispensing machine, like an ATM for tellers. Tellers no longer have cash at their wicket, so the likelihood of such a robbery occurring is quite low.

The TV news report at 1130 pm went into a bit more detail -- the suspects broke the window to gain entry, and then brandished a hand gun once inside.

Why can't the banks use some of the billions of profits they make and hire a security guard. It's not the fault of the police that somebody robbed this bank. Obviously policies will have to be changed at the bank on how they operate. A young officer was shot and killed in Ottawa in the line of duty recently. We should all have the utmost respect for our law enforcement.
Stugatzu 3/21/2013 11:00:10 AM Report

Actually.. you can see clearly from the pictures that they're toques and neck warmers. A "balaclava" is a one piece head and face covering. They come in a few different styles -- but they are all one piece design. Its clear that they're wearing two items, one to cover their hair and one to hide the face.

There's no such thing as a belaclava..

As far as the robbery, a bank employee was inside the bank pre-opening (as it is common practice). These two suspects forced entry and had a gun/pistol of some kind pointed at the employee. I don't know the employee personally, but I know the family and was relayed this information.
