Idle No More and Defenders of the Land join to call for sustained campaign of action

Idle No More, Defenders of Land Call for intensifying actions through spring, summer

CANADA (March 19, 2013) - Idle No More’s founders and its chapters across the country have issued a call to build mounting pressure, including through mass non-violent direct actions to be joined by non-natives, to challenge “the Harper government and the corporate agenda.”

The declaration, jointly released with Defenders of the Land, a network of Indigenous communities, leaders, and activists involved in high-profile struggles to defend their land rights, calls for a “Solidarity Spring” to precede a “Sovereignty Summer,” with actions on the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on March 21, Earth Day on April 22, and through the summer.

“The Harper government’s agenda is clear: to weaken all collective rights and environmental protections, in order to turn Canada into an extraction state that gives corporations unchecked power to destroy our communities and environment for profit,” reads the statement.

“Harper is trying to extinguish Indigenous Peoples’ inherent, Aboriginal, and treaty rights to their territories because these rights are the best and last protection for all Canadians,” said Arthur Manuel, a spokesperson for Defenders of the Land.

“Across the country, people are increasingly supporting First Nations who are trying to protect lands, waters, and air for everyone,” said Sylvia McAdam, one of the founders of Idle No More.

The demands of Idle No More and Defenders of the Land include a repeal of sections of the now passed Bill C-45 that impact the environment along with Aboriginal and treaty rights; changing the electoral system to proportional representation; ensuring consultation happens before any legislation is introduced that impacts collective rights and the environment; the full implementation of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples; an end to the government’s policies of “extinguishment” of Aboriginal title; the full implementation of treaties; and active resistance to violence against women and a national inquiry into murdered and missing Indigenous women.

Upcoming action days:

March 21 - International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

April 22 - Earth Day

Nationwide autonomous local protests highlighting the importance of Indigenous rights in combating the Harper and corporate agenda.

Sovereignty Summer:

A campaign of coordinated non-violent direct actions to promote Aboriginal rights and environmental protection in alliance with non-native supporters.

On March 21 - I sure hope that the OPP eliminate discrimination and start arresting and charging these protesters - tired of the OPP providing a baby sitting service.

Easy, dreamer, don't take yourself so serious. My comment was tongue-in-cheek,even if it was true. At least it wasn't racist at all. For all you know I might have been out to some of the protests..:)Can't do much from a sick bed in southern Ontario at the moment...:-)

@easy folks????Why would this statement be printed??? Did sootoday anticipate a heated response to this never ending issue? Sootoday instigates the turmoil and then paints itself clean with a statement such as this...paint over dirt all you want but the dirts is still there.

There is nothing wrong with Harper. Nice try.
Just Curious 3/19/2013 12:57:04 PM Report

@rihkee; I did not know that and have never seen it published anywhere. When did this start and when is it to be finished? Are they camping out along the way or motelling it? Is this a proper voyageur trek or a modern-day publicity stunt? The old way would have much more impact on people..Most of my communication with Soo events this winter has been via this site and it is proving quite unreliable in some areas..:-)

Oh no here we go again.
The treaty The Indian Act, 1876 was established before Canada became an independant country. Therefore the treaty is with the crown and not Canada.

S.M.A.R.T. 3/19/2013 1:17:34 PM Report

So sea shell, why don't they aim their protests and ire directly at HARPER rather than inconveniencing and irritating the rest of us? I will say this, however; if the natives can convince me that they are truly going to distance themselves from the likes of that Spence woman and from ridiculous land claims such as the entire territory of southern Manitoba including the city of Winnipeg, and make nature the true priority, then I just may be convinced to hop aboard their protest train. In the meantime let them blockade 24 Sussex Drive and quit victimizing the rest of us.
rihkee 3/19/2013 1:30:08 PM Report

@JC I provided a link to the walk, you can decide whether its a "publicity stunt" or legitimate.
Nunavut 3/19/2013 1:34:28 PM Report

Sorry Seashell, but when INM supporters block Canadians from getting to or from work or business then it becomes us versus them. And considering Harper has a majority government, that means the majority of those that bothered to vote primarily agree with what he is doing to keep our country economy going while still careing about our environment.
I do find it interesting though that Batchewana Band leaders had no problem jumping on the bandwagon to have windmills all over the pristine Lake Superior Shore...........maybe the protests should be infront of Band office...seems a little hypocritical.

Geco 3/19/2013 2:22:37 PM Report

Lets look at some real issues people, our northern forests are being wiped out!! Am I the only one who takes personal time to get out and see what is happening around us, just half a click north of Searchmont there are rolling hills of clear cuts! Miles upon miles of open land that was once filled with hard wood forest is now being wiped out for profit with little regards to the future of our lands! They have soft wood plantations in some sure.. but what about our hard wood? soft wood takes 20 to 40 years to mature, a maple takes 80 to 100!! if the Harper government really cared about the economical future of Canada wouldn't they have implemented a Selective Wood harvesting method instead of CLEAR CUTS!! The Government has been raping this land for my entire life time, giving large corporations the power to do as they please to our forests, running small Selective cut operations into the ground. Does no body keep up on the Blais vs Canada case? Michel, Tracy and Mathew took a stand against this unjustified way of logging and have been in the court system for almost 6 years now fighting for our future! Open your eyes SHEEP the wolf has been leading you all astray and you are so caught up in its system you actually defend it!! IDM are the sheep who refuse to be brought to slaughter have some respect!! They take there personal time to make a difference just like the Blais family is, take the time and learn something from your fellow sheep instead of what the "news"(wolf) wants you to know.

Who told her this?
Ru55 3/19/2013 2:44:50 PM Report

I too am having a hard time believing that they are worried about what is happening to the land. For example, they are the only ones that are "allowed" to burn tires at their protests...hummm, that's very environmentally friendly, right!??? They are "allowed" to hunt and fish without limits, again very environmentally friendly. They block roads and vehicles of all kinds have no other option that to let them idle....yet again, environmentally friendly!! And this is just naming a few of what they are doing to make us believe that they care about the land....I don't think so on iota!!!!

Country Gurl 3/19/2013 3:24:34 PM Report

With March 21st being "The Day to End Racial Discrimination", I believe that it is time that all Canadians take a stand. I think it's time that ALL Canadians are seen as equal and have equal rights. We all benefit from taxpayers money, we should all be paying into taxes.

However, on the other side, if all Canadians were considered equal and race was not an issue, things like INM would be a concern to everyone. I believe the hostility for IDM is caused by a number of factors such as:
1) Blocking roads makes the residents mad, not Harper.
2) If we all had the same rights to the environment, we would all be more concerned with what Harper is doing to the environment.

We are all part of the same nation and we should all fight together as a nation. The land belongs to ALL Canadians, so we should all be concerned.
Dreamer 3/19/2013 4:22:36 PM Report

jc did I mention racism? I never even thought that? But I jus made a comment of you NOT doing anything to help? If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem? And the land is only part of the fight. Clean Air and Water are also needed to survive for EVERYONE!

@sootoday moderator, we appreciate you trying to clean up the disgusting racism and trolling on stories especially First Nations protest stories but why not go one step further and ban or disallow comments from some of the worst offenders from all your stories not just First Nations stories its not hard to figure out who it's the same jackasses everyday acting tough from there couches or government jobs whining how natives and everything else is a waste of taxpayer money blah blah blah that would make the site a much more enjoyable for everyone. That being said I am a Caucasian taxpayer who fully supports what the First Nations people are trying to do. Keep up the good work and don't be discouraged by all the negativity, remember you can't fix stupid!
S.Claus 3/19/2013 5:33:04 PM Report

It is clear that the current and previous Provincial Liberal Governments are not going to protect the TAXPAYERS of this province (eg Caledonia - Idle No More ILLEGAL blockades) The OPP Commissioner should be fired for failing to follow court orders. As for the Politicians - well Politicians are like Diapers, they should be changed often and for the same reason. Illegal blockades are illegal blockades irregardless of race, creed or colour.

Do a simple survey of the INM protestors, to gauge their knowledge of the FACTS about what the Harper government is doing - or not; and what the actual environmental laws are.
I guarantee that 99.9% of the protesters know squat about the actual facts.
the_mage 3/19/2013 6:19:04 PM Report

Well I guess when you put it like that...and those are your words, not mine.....If you agree with Harper then it is a us "the people" against you!! It makes me sad to hear it put that way! We watch the news and hear about the wars being faught over seas...and it sounds like one brewing right hear on this site! I won't be commenting anymore. I am a hard-working non-native tax payer. I've worked hard all of my life and paid taxes all of my life, and will pay taxes until the day I die. I had to buy my own land and I have to pay taxes every year on the land I purchased. Because I don't live within city limits and I wanted clean drinking water, I had to pay and drill my own well with my own money. I don't get any extra funding because of my race and I didn't get any funding for going to school. I had to work and pay for it myself. I appreciate all that the Natives are doing in the idle no more and would really like to join them in all of their protests and blockades, but I really don't think my employers would appreciate me missng work and I certainly don't think my boss would appreciate me being involved with something illegal...not if I wanted to keep my job.
